Volcanic eruptions exert the most important radiative forcing on Earth’s climate during the pre-industrial interval of the last millennium. In this thesis, I investigate the role of volcanic eruptions in altering tropical climate, including temperature and rainfall. I primarily use forced transient simulations of the last millennium as a tool to explore how explosive volcanic events project onto the hydrologic cycle, as well as the imprint of water isotopologues (H216O, H218O) associated with rainfall. Attention is given to the South American continent specifically (in chapter 2), and to the entire tropics (in chapter 3).

Chemical fingerprints of volcanic airfall deposits obtained from high-precision electron microprobe analysis of glass and phenocrysts phases provide geochemical correlations with temporal precision unattainable by other methods. In this research electron microprobe analysis (EMA) techniques, to fingerprint chemically and correlate fresh and altered volcanic airfall deposits, have been utilized to test the value of this tool for future research on stratigraphic correlation. The Ankara volcanics comprise a small volcanic field immediately to the north of Ankara, Turkey. This volcanic field is composed of a mixture of flows, tuffs, and agglomerates, with the flows ranging in composition from high-K basaltic andesite to rhyolite. Dacitic flows are the most common. A potassium-argon date gives a Middle Eocene age of 42.0 ± 1.6 m.y. The volcanics unconformably overlie Paleozoic sediments of the "Cimmerian continent" to the south and Mesozoic rocks of the Ankara melange to the north.
