Reconstructing the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) provides insight into understanding end-Pleistocene climate, a critical set of boundary conditions prior to the onset of Holocene climates that were optimal for human dispersal and societal growth. Constraining ice sheet dynamics, glacier retreat rates, and the timing of still-stands and readvances requires identifying glacial landforms such as moraines, drumlins, and mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs). Drumlins and MSGLs indicate ice sheet flow directions and provide the location of paleo-ice streams, which were accelerated and localized pathways for ice discharge. Ice streams control ice sheet mass balance; therefore, identifying the location of …
Earth’S Oceanic Oxygen History From Phanerozoic To Pleistocene Glacial Cycles: Insights From The Carbonate Iodine-To-Calcium Proxy, Wanyi Lu
Dissertations - ALL
Oxygen in the oceans is an important part of the significant and complex evolution of Earth’s climate, with great significance for the evolution of life in the oceans. My PhD research has been primarily driven by three major questions: (1) How can we reliably reconstruct oxygen levels in ancient oceans? (2) How did oceanic oxygen levels evolve throughout Earth’s history? (3) How did oceanic oxygen levels affect habitability of the Earth? Most studies of the Earth’s oxygen history have focused on the atmosphere and deep oceans, but in contrast, I focused on the upper ocean (the top tens to a …
Non-Uniform Glacial Erosion In New York State Viewed Through The Lens Of Cosmogenic Nuclide Concentrations And Forward Modeling, Jennifer Nita Nair
Non-Uniform Glacial Erosion In New York State Viewed Through The Lens Of Cosmogenic Nuclide Concentrations And Forward Modeling, Jennifer Nita Nair
Theses - ALL
Throughout the Pleistocene the northern hemisphere was subject to alternating ice-free and ice accumulation periods. Today’s glacial landscapes, composed of a mix of erosive and depositional geomorphological features, reflect the integrated impacts of successive Pleistocene glaciations. In North America such impacts include the formation of the Great Lakes, the reorganization of river networks and the deposition of till sheets, erratic boulders, and moraines. Nearly all of New York State was covered by ice; however, the impact of the successive glaciations on the landscape varies throughout the state. An examination of the regional topography reveals relatively undissected, streamlined landforms of the …
