An Interacting Galaxy Pair In The Bootes Void, D. Weistrop, P. Hintzen, R. C. Kennicut, C. Liu, James Lowenthal, K. P. Cheng, R. Oliversen, B. Woodgate
Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We report the first identified pair of interacting galaxies in the Bootes void. The galaxies, CG 692 (IRAS 1519 + 5050) and CG 693, have redshifts 0.0572 and 0.0575, respectively, and a mutual separation of ∼34 kpc. CG 692 is experiencing widespread star formation, at a rate estimated to be 18.4 M ⊙ yr-1. CG 693 is a Seyfert 1, the third AGN found in the Bootes void, with a small amount of extranuclear star formation. The pair is another example of interacting galaxies displaying starburst and Seyfert activity apparently triggered by the interaction.

Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We report the first images obtained with the Goddard Fabry-Perot imager, a very sensitive and tunable imaging system designed to achieve the high levels of performance required in the optical studies of faint emission-line extragalactic objects. A velocity sequence of calibrated narrow-band CCD images (FWHM ∼7 Å) has been obtained to cover the 3000 km s-1 velocity space between the redshifted Hα emission lines of NGC 1275 (the central dominant galaxy of the Perseus Cluster), its extended associated system of low-velocity (LV) filaments and the high-velocity (HV) system of knots, projected on the same line of sight in the sky. …
The Effect Of Continuous Stirring On Off-Critical And Critical Samples Of A Phase Separating Binary Liquid Mixture, Nalini Easwar
The Effect Of Continuous Stirring On Off-Critical And Critical Samples Of A Phase Separating Binary Liquid Mixture, Nalini Easwar
Physics: Faculty Publications
The effect of shear on phase separation in a continuously stirred mixture of isobutyric acid and water has been studied. The data for the onset of phase separation in the stirred samples that are as far away as 500 mK from the critical point compare favorably with the theory of Onuki and Takasue and with similar measurements on very off-critical mixtures of 2-6 lutidine plus water reported by Min et al. However, as the composition gets closer to the critical composition significant differences arise. The main feature is that the measured suppression in temperature peaks at an off-critical composition …
Competition Between Superconductivity And A New 20 K Phase In -(Bedt-Ttf)2i3: Specific Heat Measurements, Nathanael A. Fortune, K. Murata, K. Ikeda, T. Takahashi
Competition Between Superconductivity And A New 20 K Phase In -(Bedt-Ttf)2i3: Specific Heat Measurements, Nathanael A. Fortune, K. Murata, K. Ikeda, T. Takahashi
Physics: Faculty Publications
We present here direct calorimetric evidence for a new transition at T*=22.25 K in the metallic state of quasi-2D organic superconductor -(BEDT-TTF)2I3 at ambient pressure, as suggested by our previous measurement of the temperature-dependent Hall coefficient RH(T). The apparent reduction in the effective electronic density of states at T* quantitatively explains for the first time the suppression of Tc from the pressure-stabilized eehigh-Tcee value of 8 K to the ambient-pressure cooled eelow-Tcee value of 1.5 K.
Ghost Circles For Twist Maps, Christophe Golé
Ghost Circles For Twist Maps, Christophe Golé
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Completely ordered invariant circles are found for the gradient of the energy flow in the state space, containing the critical sets corresponding to the Birkhoff orbits of all rotation number. In particular, these ghost circles contain the Aubry-Mather sets and map-invariant circles as completely critical sets when these exist. We give a criterion for a sequence of rational ghost circles to converge to a completely critical one.

The eastern limb of the Berkshire anticlinorium of western Massachusetts (Figure 1) is a complex, multiplydeformed, polymetamorphic, Taconian/Acadian orogenic terrane. The geologic framework of this area is well established, originally by the mapping of B.K. Emerson (1892, 1898, 1899) and Pumpelly et al. (1894), as summarized on the Massachusetts geologic map of Emerson (1917), and more recently by the mapping of L.M. Hall, N.L. Hatch, S.A. Norton, P.H. Osberg, N.M. Ratcliffe, and R.S. Stanley, as summarized on the Massachusetts geologic map of Zen et al. (1983). The summary reports of USGS Professional Paper 1366 in 1988 as well as the …
