The authors introduce a novel coding technique which significantly improves the performance of the traditional vector quantisation (VQ) schemes at low bit rates. High interblock correlation in natural images results in a high probability that neighbouring image blocks are mapped to small subsets of the VQ codebook, which contains highly correlated codevectors. If, instead of the whole VQ codebook, a small subset is considered for the purpose of encoding neighbouring blocks, it is possible to improve the performance of traditional VQ schemes significantly. This paper presents two algorithms for removing the cross-talk effect in CMOS sensor based color-imaging systems. The algorithms work on the Bayer raw data and have low computational complexity. Experimental results on Macbeth color chart and real images demonstrated that both algorithms can effectively eliminate the cross-talk effect and produce better quality images with conventional color interpolation and correction algorithms designed for CCD image sensors. Complexity of the algorithms is also analyzed.

This correspondence compares the computational complexity of the pair-wise nearest neighbor (PNN) and Linde–Buzo–Gray (LBG) algorithms by deriving analytical expressions for their computational times. It is shown that for a practical codebook size and training vector sequence, the LBG algorithm is indeed more computationally efficient than the PNN algorithm.

The concept of the Shortest (or Minimum) Spanning Tree (SST)and Recursive SST (RSST) of an undirected weighted graph has been successfully applied in image segmentation and edge detection. This paper presents a divide-and-conquer approach for (R)SST based image segmentation in order to over-come the problem of high computational complexity associated with conventional graph algorithms. Many systems have been proposed for protecting the intellectual property of multimedia authors and owners from the public at large, who have access to the multimedia only after it is published. In this paper, we consider the problem of protecting authors' intellectual property rights from insiders, such as collaborating authors and producers, who interact with the creative process before publication. We describe the weaknesses of standard proof-of-ownership watermarking approaches against dishonest insiders, and propose several possible architectures for systems that avoid these weaknesses. We further show how these architectures can be adapted for fingerprinting in the presence of dishonest insiders.

A modified fuzzy adaptive resonance theory neural network (ART) is used as a classifier for a texture recognition system. The system consists of a wavelet based low level feature detector and a high level ART classifier. The performance improvement is measured in terms of identification accuracy and computational burden.

This paper introduces a novel coding scheme based on Tree-Structured Vector Quantisation (TSVQ) scheme for image compression. The genealogical relationship among the indices of the neighbouring blocks generated from vector quantisation is exploited to improve the coding performance of TSVQ. The proposed coding scheme provides about 3.5 dB improvement over the basic TSVQ scheme and outperforms VQ schemes with memory and JPEG coding standard at low bit-rates. In addition its performance is comparable with address VQ but with much less complexity.

Localization of facial feature points is an important step for many subsequent facial image analysis tasks. In this paper, we proposed a new coarse-to-fine method for extracting 20 facial feature points from image sequences. In particular, the Viola-Jones face detection method is extended to detect small-scale facial components with wide shape variations, and linear Kalman filters are used to smoothly track the feature points by handling detection errors and head rotations. The authors consider coding gain and spatial localisation properties of DWT filters for still image compression. Using a JPEG type quantisation and encoding method several images are compressed using a DWT implemented using various two-band subband filter sets. It is concluded that a relatively high coding gain (relative to a highly correlated source) is necessary, but not sufficient, for good image coding performance. Further, it is observed that low spatial width filters are desirable, particularly in regard to reduced ringing distortion. We show that the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is the best orthogonal transform, in terms of energy packing efficiency, for coding input steps of uniformly distributed random phase. Over sufficiently small block sizes, edges in an image can be modeled as such step inputs. This characteristic of the DCT, coupled with its high energy packing efficiency for highly correlated data, helps explain the impressive performance of the DCT for image compression.

This study presents a stochastic framework in which incomplete training data are used to boost the accuracy of segmentation and to optimise segmentation when images under consideration are corrupted by inhomogeneities. The authors propose a semi-supervised maximum a posteriori probability (ssMAP) segmentation method that is able to utilise any amount of training data that are usually insufficient for supervised segmentation. A new method of texture classification comprising two processing stages, namely a low-level evolutionary feature extraction based on Gabor wavelets and a high-level neural network based pattern recognition, is proposed. This paper introduces an improved image adaptive vector quantisation technique - index compressed image adaptive vector quantisation (IC-IAVQ). Despite its advantage over the universal codebook VQ, basic image adaptive VQ (IAVQ) is still suboptimum; it neglects the correlation among block indices in the encoded image. The new technique, IC-IAVQ, overcomes this suboptimality through a pre-processing and lossless compression of block indices. Simulation results using several images show that IC-IAVQ outperforms IAVQ and entropy coded IAVQ, especially at low bit-rates by about 2dB on average.

We propose a fully private fingerprint matching protocol that compares two fingerprints based on the most widely-used minutia-based fingerprint matching algorithm. The protocol enables two parties, each holding a private fingerprint, to find out if their fingerprints belong to the same individual. Unlike previous works, we do not make any simplifying assumption on the matching algorithm or use generic multiparty computation protocols in our constructions. Not much has been done in utilizing the available information at the decoder to optimize the decoding performance of watermarking systems. This paper focuses on analyzing different decoding methods, namely, Minimum Distance, Maximum Likelihood and Maximum a-posteriori decoding given varying information at the decoder in the blind detection context. This paper proposes a multiresolution form of the singular value decomposition (SVD) and shows how it may be used for signal analysis and approximation. It is well-known that the SVD has optimal decorrelation and subrank approximation properties. The multiresolution form of SVD proposed here retains those properties, and moreover, has linear computational complexity. By using the multiresolution SVD, the following important characteristics of a signal may be measured, at each of several levels of resolution: isotropy, sphericity of principal components, self-similarity under scaling, and resolution of mean-squared error into meaningful components. A multiplicative autoregressive model is used in a lossless predictive image coding scheme.
