Developing A Cloud Chamber To Measure Cosmic Ray Muons, Ryan Van Ostrand, Caroline Van Berkum Apr 2021

Developing A Cloud Chamber To Measure Cosmic Ray Muons, Ryan Van Ostrand, Caroline Van Berkum

Celebration of Research

Prior to this project Northwestern had no means of seeing subatomic particles. We developed an innovative method using standard equipment to detect subatomic interactions. The intent of this project was primarily to create a working cloud chamber with a secondary goal of measuring the cosmic ray muon attenuation for each floor of Van Peursem Hall.

The Science And Fiction Of The Multiverse, Alyssa Buren Apr 2021

The Science And Fiction Of The Multiverse, Alyssa Buren

Celebration of Research

Science fiction is often viewed as a way to escape reality and enter into a realm where any idea, no matter how farfetched it may seem, is possible. However, little do many people realize that some of these seemingly farfetched ideas are actual scientific theories. Among these lies the theory of the multiverse. Stemming from the big bang theory, the multiverse is a scientific theory created to explain the properties of the universe that are finely tuned for the existence of life. While the multiverse has many different theories within itself, the main idea is that the universe we observe …

Popularity Vs Complexity In Esports Games, Kitrick Fynaardt Apr 2021

Popularity Vs Complexity In Esports Games, Kitrick Fynaardt

Celebration of Research

Esports is a booming new industry, full of a wide variety of players, games, sponsors, and tournaments. As the industry grows, audiences get bigger and bigger, with hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world watching their favorite Esport. With so much money and advertising deals on the line, Esport tournaments cannot afford to be boring. Esports need to be complex, interesting, and require vast amounts of skill. This paper aims to find a relationship between the complexity of an Esport and that Esport's popularity, to test whether or not complexity is a sufficient predictor for popularity. Due to …

Using Fcs To Explore Agglomeration States Of Small Heat Shock Proteins, Noah Gritters, David C. Arnett Apr 2021

Using Fcs To Explore Agglomeration States Of Small Heat Shock Proteins, Noah Gritters, David C. Arnett

Celebration of Research

Small heat shock proteins are present in nearly every form of life. However, despite their ubiquity, there are many questions about the structure of sHSPs. It is known that they can take a monomeric or an oligomeric form, and they have chaperone-like properties, meaning they help protect and fold other proteins. The aggregation and separation of these oligomers are reversible and controlled by environmental factors such as temperature and pH, but there are questions about the specifics of this process. I am growing up, purifying, and labeling sHSP so I can look into these questions using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy.

Fluorescent Labeling Of Calmodulin For Future Application, Emma Anunson, Emily Dobesh, Travis Grover, Benjamin Kingery, Dominick Pickard, Mitchell Rentschler, David Arnett Apr 2021

Fluorescent Labeling Of Calmodulin For Future Application, Emma Anunson, Emily Dobesh, Travis Grover, Benjamin Kingery, Dominick Pickard, Mitchell Rentschler, David Arnett

Celebration of Research

Calmodulin (CaM) is a small dumbbell-shaped, intermediary protein. CaM binds with several hundred different molecules to help control bodily functions. At Northwestern, we use fluorescently labeled CaM to understand these functions further. The goal of this project is to successfully label CaM protein using the fluorescent dye Alexa Fluor 594. After labeling CaM, we will use buffer exchange chromatography to purify the sample. Following that, we will use three processes to verify the successful labeling of CaM: UV/VIS spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and fluorescent microscope imaging. Once labeled and purified, our CaM samples can be used for years to come by …
