The Synthesis And Characterization Of Polycarbonates Based On 1,1'-Dihydroxyethyl-2,2'-Biimidazole, Judith J. Garces Jan 1987

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Polycarbonates Based On 1,1'-Dihydroxyethyl-2,2'-Biimidazole, Judith J. Garces

Masters Theses

"The synthesis of polycarbonates formed by the reaction of 1,1'-dihydroxyethyl-2,2'-biimidazole and diphenyl or diethyl carbonates was investigated and the products formed were characterized. The molecular weights of the polymers were dependent on catalyst, ratio of starting materials, nature of carbonate (aromatic or aliphatic) and method of polymerization. Isolated polymers exhibit a linear structure. They have no well-defined melting points (melting pt. range of 280- 330⁰C) indicating low degree of crystallization, and undergo less than 9% decomposition below 200⁰C"--Abstract, page ii.

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang Jan 1987

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Phase diagrams have been determined showing the extent of the inverse micellar or microemulsion region for several ionic surfactants and some cosurfactants. Hexylamine has been found to be a very effective cosurfactant giving rise to very good water solubilizing capacity at extremely low surfactant concentrations and very low cosurfactant levels at rather high initial hydrocarbon levels.

A fairly extensive study of phase equilibria of the system composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate, hexylamine, heptane, and water has been carried out. The conductivity behavior of the inverse micellar or microemulsion phase of the system shows the percolation phenomenon. Low angle X-ray diffraction …

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov Jan 1987

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov

Doctoral Dissertations

"As demands and ambitions increase in Artificial Intelligence, the need for formal systems that facilitate a study and a simulation of a machine cognition has become an inevitability. This paper explores and developes the foundations of a formal system for propositional reasoning about knowledge. The semantics of every meaningful expression in the system is fully determined by its intension, the set of complexes in which the expression is confirmed. The knowledge system is based on three zeroth-order theories of epistemic reasoning for consciousness, knowledge and entailed knowledge. The results presented in the paper determine the soundness and the completeness of …

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang Jan 1987

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The amphiphile association behavior of Aerosol OT (sodium di-w-ethylhexylsulfoccinate) and p-xylene in combination with mixtures of different ratios of glycerol/water systems was studied and compared to that in the corresponding water and glycerol systems. The presence of glycerol strongly destabilized the inverse hexagonal liquid crystal phase observed in the aqueous system. The glycerol showed more ability to penetrate into the amphiphile bilayer than water in the lamellar liquid crystal phase. The influences of water and glycerol on the organization of amphiphile in the lamellar liquid crystal phase are of the same order.

The gross diffusion coefficient of 1% 2,4-diamino-6-piperidinopyrimidine-3-oxide in …

A.R.M.S., Arbitrary Robot Modeling System, William Richard Gerlt Jan 1987

A.R.M.S., Arbitrary Robot Modeling System, William Richard Gerlt

Masters Theses

“This paper deals with the mathematical modeling of robot arms. Modeling robot arms includes finding a suitable way to describe a robot, turning the description into a mathematical system, and using the system to find a set of equations which can be used to control the robot.

One of the problems associated with robot modeling is that it involves a great deal of mathematics. When the process is done by hand, the large volume of mathematics makes the process very time consuming and prone to errors. These problems are part of the motivation for automating the modeling of robots.

A Gravity And Magnetic Study Of The Crooked Creek Cryptoexplosion Structure, Crawford County, Missouri, Charles Edward Woodbury Jan 1987

A Gravity And Magnetic Study Of The Crooked Creek Cryptoexplosion Structure, Crawford County, Missouri, Charles Edward Woodbury

Masters Theses

"The pre-Pennsylvanian structure at Crooked Creek consists of a complex, vertically faulted ring of Cambrian and Ordovician sediments with a central uplifted core. The center of the structure is strongly deformed and contains shatter cones, brecciation, and other signs of extreme shock.

A magnetic low over the center of the structure suggests that igneous material was not involved in the formation of the structure, and this is corroborated by core analysis. Gravity data indicates several small gravity lows, possibly associated with areas of brecciation, circling the flanks of the structure. As in the magnetic data, there is no indication that …

A Paleoenvironmental Study Of The Salem Limestone In The Vicinity Of St. Louis, Missouri, Douglas J. Van Brunt Jan 1987

A Paleoenvironmental Study Of The Salem Limestone In The Vicinity Of St. Louis, Missouri, Douglas J. Van Brunt

Masters Theses

“The Salem Limestone (Meramecian) of Mississippian age in the vicinity of St. Louis, Missouri is composed of a variable sequence of limestones deposited in shallow waters adjacent to scattered positive elements. This unit varies in thickness from zero up to 160 feet.

A medium to coarse-grained calcarenite is the dominant rock-type of the thesis area and is most abundant in the central and southwest regions. Stratigraphic sections in the northern region are more dolomitic, increasingly brecciated, and contains numerous secondary features. The southeast region is thinly bedded and composed of greater amounts of micrite formed by algal activity or direct …

A Petrographic Investigation Of The Rhythmically Bedded Upper Fayetteville Formation (Mississippian) In Northern Arkansas, Edith Ann Starbuck Jan 1987

A Petrographic Investigation Of The Rhythmically Bedded Upper Fayetteville Formation (Mississippian) In Northern Arkansas, Edith Ann Starbuck

Masters Theses

"The upper Mississippian Fayetteville Formation in northern Arkansas is primarily a calcareous black shale, but in some localities the upper one third to one half of the formation is made up of alternating black shales and limestones. Comparable lithologies have been suggested by some (Hallam, Ricken, Kent, and Sujkowski) to have been created by the diagenetic segregation of carbonate from calcareous shale.

Petrographic thin section analysis reveals that the lowest limestone beds of the rhythmic upper Fayetteville are made up almost entirely of microspar and all fossil material is recrystallized, even to the point of obliteration in some cases. The …

Training For The Airland Battle With Modeling And Simulation On The Microcomputer, David Dean Holmes Jan 1987

Training For The Airland Battle With Modeling And Simulation On The Microcomputer, David Dean Holmes

Masters Theses

"This paper describes a methodology for modifying a combat training simulation model to include a comprehensive data structure and computer software, to allow the model to be implemented on a microcomputer. It begins by developing a topology for combat simulation models and proceeds to define a data structure suitable for describing military units and facilitating the varied aspects of the simulation. An eclectic approach to the development of the model and the implementing software is followed throughout. Appropriate aspects of a number of models are incorporated into a single model suitable for training military commanders and their staffs. PASCAL, a …

Lily: A Parser Generator For Ll(1) Languages, Timothy Topper Taylor Jan 1987

Lily: A Parser Generator For Ll(1) Languages, Timothy Topper Taylor

Masters Theses

This paper discusses the design and implementation of Lily, a language for generating LL(1) language parsers, originally designed by Dr. Thomas J. Sager of the University of Missouri--Rolla. A method for the automatic generation of parser tables is described which creates small, highly optimized tables, suitable for conversion to minimal perfect hash functions.

An implementation of Lily is discussed with attention to design goals, implementation of parser table generation, and table optimization techniques. Proposals are made detailing possibilities for further augmentation of the system. Examples of Lily programs are given as well as a manual for the system.

Lithofacies Analysis Of The Lamotte Sandstone In South Central Missouri, Michael Gerard Kraenzle Jan 1987

Lithofacies Analysis Of The Lamotte Sandstone In South Central Missouri, Michael Gerard Kraenzle

Masters Theses

"Based on the analysis of thirty-one cores obtained from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in Rolla, the upper Cambrian Lamotte Sandstone in South Central Missouri has been divided into six sedimentary facies ranging from alluvial fan and braided stream to open marine.

The Lamotte Sandstone is the basal Cambrian sandstone found throughout most of the state of Missouri. It directly overlies late Precambrian (1.4 to 1.5 billion year old) granites and metasediments. The Lamotte and overlying Bonneterre Formations are generally considered to have been deposited by a transgression which occurred during the Late Cambrian Period (Croixian Epoch).

The Lamotte …

Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli Jan 1987

Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli

Masters Theses

"This study evaluates the multilist and inverted file systems. It describes the structure of the two file system and then proceeds to investigate the performance. The performance is based on quantitative estimates of space requirements for file system, time to retrieve records, time to insert a record, time to delete a record, time to update a record and time to exhaustively read and reorganize the file system. The study then investigates specific situations in which one file system seems to perform better than the other"--Abstract, page ii.

A Proposed C Language Binding For The Graphical Kernel System-3d, Mark Gerard Bolten

Masters Theses

"This thesis introduces a proposed C language binding definition for the International Standards Organization's draft international standard of the Graphical Kernel System-3D. This work augments the earlier C language binding of the two dimensional version of the Graphical Kernel System commonly known as GKS. The proposed function interface will provide a basis for, if not a final, C language binding for the three dimensional version of the Graphical Kernel System"--Abstract, page ii.

Medial Axis Transform Using Ridge Following, Richard Mark Volkmann Jan 1987

Medial Axis Transform Using Ridge Following, Richard Mark Volkmann

Masters Theses

"The intent of this investigation has been to find a robust algorithm for generation of the medial axis transform (MAT). The MAT is an invertible, object centered, shape representation defined as the collection of the centers of disks contained in the shape but not in any other such disk. Its uses include feature extraction, shape smoothing, and data compression. MAT generating algorithms include brushfire, Voronoi diagrams, and ridge following. An improved implementation of the ridge following algorithm is given. Orders of the MAT generating algorithms are compared. The effects of the number of edges in the polygonal approximation, shape area, …
