Seismic Anisotropy And The Mantle Dynamics Beneath The Arabian Plate, Saleh Ismail Hassan Qaysi Jan 2018

Seismic Anisotropy And The Mantle Dynamics Beneath The Arabian Plate, Saleh Ismail Hassan Qaysi

Doctoral Dissertations

"We investigate mantle seismic azimuthal anisotropy and deformation beneath the Arabian Plate and adjacent areas using data from 182 broadband seismic stations which include 157 stations managed by the Saudi Geological Survey. A total of about 4000 pairs of shear wave splitting parameters are obtained using the transverse minimization technique. The individual XKS (including PKS, SKS, and SKKS) splitting measurements were manually checked to ensure the quality. The well-defined parameters show dominantly N-S fast orientations at the majority of the stations, and NW-SE fast orientations along the Zagras Mountain front. No clear systematic variations of the splitting parameters as a …

Harmful Algae, Algal Toxin, Taste And Odor Control And Mitigation In Public Water System, Haiting Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

“Recent years, harmful algal blooms occurrence has increased quickly in the surface water worldwide, which has become a concern for drinking water plants due to the ability of toxic algae (cyanobacteria) to produce cyanotoxins including microcystins (MCs), mainly MC-LR, cylindrospermopsin (CYN), and taste and odor (T&O) compounds. Various types of chemicals are widely used in drinking water treatment plants as oxidants for treating source water challenged with harmful algal blooms. In this study, the release and degradation of intracellular MC-LR due to oxidation of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), most common specie of cyanobacteria, was examined kinetically. Effect of …

Hdg Methods For Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Pdes, Yangwen Zhang Jan 2018

Hdg Methods For Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Pdes, Yangwen Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

"We begin an investigation of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for approximating the solution of Dirichlet boundary control problems for PDEs. These problems can involve atypical variational formulations, and often have solutions with low regularity on polyhedral domains. These issues can provide challenges for numerical methods and the associated numerical analysis. In this thesis, we use an existing HDG method for a Dirichlet boundary control problem for the Poisson equation, and obtain optimal a priori error estimates for the control in the high regularity case. We also propose a new HDG method to approximate the solution of a Dirichlet boundary …

Incremental Proper Orthogonal Decomposition For Pde Simulation Data: Algorithms And Analysis, Hiba Fareed Jan 2018

Incremental Proper Orthogonal Decomposition For Pde Simulation Data: Algorithms And Analysis, Hiba Fareed

Doctoral Dissertations

"We propose an incremental algorithm to compute the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of simulation data for a partial differential equation. Specifically, we modify an incremental matrix SVD algorithm of Brand to accommodate data arising from Galerkin-type simulation methods for time dependent PDEs. We introduce an incremental SVD algorithm with respect to a weighted inner product to compute the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The algorithm is applicable to data generated by many numerical methods for PDEs, including finite element and discontinuous Galerkin methods. We also modify the algorithm to initialize and incrementally update both the SVDand an error bound during the …

"Single-crystal Si is the bedrock of semiconductor devices due to the high crystalline perfection which minimizes electron-hole recombination, and the dense native silicon oxide which minimizes surface states. To expand the palette of electronic materials beyond planar Si, an inexpensive source of highly ordered material is needed that can serve as an inert substrate for the epitaxial growth of grain boundary-free semiconductors, photonic materials, and superconductors. There is also a need for a simple, inexpensive, and scalable fabrication technique for the growth of semiconductor nanostructures and thin films. This dissertation focuses on the fabrication of semiconducting nanowires (polycrystalline Ge & …

Improved Crpd Analysis And A Secure Scheduler Against Information Leakage In Real-Time Systems, Ying Zhang Jan 2018

Improved Crpd Analysis And A Secure Scheduler Against Information Leakage In Real-Time Systems, Ying Zhang

Masters Theses

"Real-time systems are widely applied to the time-critical fields. In order to guarantee that all tasks can be completed on time, predictability becomes a necessary factor when designing a real-time system. Due to more and more requirements about the performance in the real-time embedded system, the cache memory is introduced to the real-time embedded systems.

However, the cache behavior is difficult to predict since the data will be loaded either on the cache or the memory. In order to taking the unexpected overhead, execution time are often enlarged by a certain (huge) factor. However, this will cause a waste of …

Integrated Study On The Applicability Of Co₂-Eor In Unconventional Liquids Rich Reservoirs, Dheiaa Khafief Khashan Alfarge

Doctoral Dissertations

"Unconventional Liquids Rich Reservoirs (ULR) such as Bakken, Niobrara, and Eagle Ford have become the main target for oil and gas investors as conventional formations started to deplete and diminish in number. These unconventional plays have a huge oil reserve; however, the predicted primary oil recovery is still low as an average of 7.5 %. Unconventional Improved Oil Recovery (UIOR) techniques are still a new concept in the oil industry because there is no commercial project for any IOR technique so far. Injecting carbon dioxide (CO₂) might be the most potential strategy to improve oil recovery in such complex plays. …

Cloud Transactions And Caching For Improved Performance In Clouds And Dtns, Dileep Mardham Jan 2018

Cloud Transactions And Caching For Improved Performance In Clouds And Dtns, Dileep Mardham

Masters Theses

"In distributed transactional systems deployed over some massively decentralized cloud servers, access policies are typically replicated. Interdependencies ad inconsistencies among policies need to be addressed as they can affect performance, throughput and accuracy. Several stringent levels of policy consistency constraints and enforcement approaches to guarantee the trustworthiness of transactions on cloud servers are proposed. We define a look-up table to store policy versions and the concept of "Tree-Based Consistency" approach to maintain a tree structure of the servers. By integrating look-up table and the consistency tree based approach, we propose an enhanced version of Two-phase validation commit (2PVC) protocol integrated …

Part I: Design, Synthesis, And Studies Of Novel Age-Inhibitors And Age-Breakers; Part Ii: Novel Synthetic Methods For Organofluorine Compound, Jatin Mehta

Doctoral Dissertations

"Novel small molecule inhibitors and breakers of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) have been synthesized and their in vitro inhibitory activities have been studied by 13C NMR, fluorescence, and UV-visible spectroscopy. We have demonstrated that these AGE-inhibitors and AGE-breakers were found to be more effective in their sequestration of AGE intermediates, such as dehydroascorbate (DHA) than the state-of-the art phenacylthiazolium bromide (PTB)-based AGE-inhibitors and AGE-breakers. Citric acid and other polyphenolic antioxidants have substantial AGE inhibitory effects in the D-glucose/leucine or benzylamine Maillard reaction model systems, and thus they are suitable as dietary additives for ameliorating AGE-induced complications.

Organofluorine compounds have …

Universal Wavefront Transmission Through Disordered Media, Jayson Robert Summers Jan 2018

Universal Wavefront Transmission Through Disordered Media, Jayson Robert Summers

Masters Theses

”When electromagnetic waves propagate through random dielectric media, they scatter in a predictable, deterministic way. The process is also fully reversible. If one sends an exiting wave backward through the same material, it will converge back to its original form and location in the same amount of time it took to originally propagate through the material. Due to this predictability, a great deal of research has went into studying these scattering processes in multimode fibers, diffusers, biological tissues, and other media. Scientists have turned random scattering material into focusing lenses, image transmitters, and highly transmitting media by controlling the impinging …

Solidification Rate Detection Through Solid-Liquid Interface Tracking, Wei Luo Jan 2018

Solidification Rate Detection Through Solid-Liquid Interface Tracking, Wei Luo

Masters Theses

”Studying the melt pool dynamics in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing is vital to predict the microstructure of the built part. High-speed synchrotron hard X-ray imaging is an advanced technique to monitor the LPBF process in situ and in real time. However, it is very challenging to track the solid-liquid interface due to the low image contrast, high image noise and unstable intensity of the image sequences.

In this paper, we propose an solid-liquid interface detector with human interaction to track the interface to compute the solidification rate of the melt pool. The proposed method includes six independent …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The 2007-2009 Recession On The Day Of The Week Effect For The S&P 500 And Its Sectors, Marcel Alwin Trick Jan 2018

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The 2007-2009 Recession On The Day Of The Week Effect For The S&P 500 And Its Sectors, Marcel Alwin Trick

Masters Theses

"Several studies have shown that the mean returns and the volatility structure of stock markets change seasonally or by day of the week. For instance, some authors found out that Monday returns are lower compared to Friday returns or that volatility on Wednesdays are lower compared to the rest of the week. Other researchers showed that these effects have changed after certain periods of economic stress. This led to the question, whether the day of the week effects in returns and volatility are in the US stock market and if patterns have changed from pre-recession through the 2007-2009 recession into …

A Network Tomography Approach For Traffic Monitoring In Smart Cities, Ruoxi Zhang Jan 2018

A Network Tomography Approach For Traffic Monitoring In Smart Cities, Ruoxi Zhang

Masters Theses

"Various urban planning and managing activities required by a Smart City are feasible because of traffic monitoring. As such, the thesis proposes a network tomography-based approach that can be applied to road networks to achieve a cost-efficient, flexible, and scalable monitor deployment. Due to the algebraic approach of network tomography, the selection of monitoring intersections can be solved through the use of matrices, with its rows representing paths between two intersections, and its columns representing links in the road network. Because the goal of the algorithm is to provide a cost-efficient, minimum error, and high coverage monitor set, this problem …

3d Seismic Imaging Of Submarine Stratovolcanic And Salt Structures Beneath The Taranaki Basin, New Zealand And The Gulf Of Mexico, Ersin Erdem Unkaracalar

Masters Theses

"The relationship of submarine stratovolcanic and salt structures with overlying sediments creates a significant role in the petroleum system due to the emplacement and burial of volcano and salt. This study characterizes the spatial and temporal distribution of structural and stratigraphic features associated with submarine stratovolcano and salt body to provide insights for elements and processes of petroleum geology related to regional tectonics.

The stratovolcanic and salt structures are clearly identified on seismic sections. However, distortion of ray paths passing through the salt and turning seismic waves prevents accurate identification of steep flanks of salt. The seismic response to a …

Developing Computational Models For Pulsed-Inductive Plasma Formation, Zachary Aaron Gill Jan 2018

Developing Computational Models For Pulsed-Inductive Plasma Formation, Zachary Aaron Gill

Masters Theses

"Pulsed-inductive discharges are a common method of producing a plasma. They provide a mechanism for quickly and efficiently generating a large volume of plasma for rapid use and are seen in applications including propulsion, fusion power, and high-power lasers. However, some common designs see a delayed response time due to the plasma forming when the magnitude of the magnetic field in the device is at a minimum. New designs are difficult to evaluate due to the amount of time needed to construct a new geometry and the high monetary cost of changing the power generation circuit. To more quickly evaluate …

Imaging The Subsurface In Eastern Part Of Lake Chesterfield Using A Combination Of Geophysical Tools, Jiawei Li Jan 2018

Imaging The Subsurface In Eastern Part Of Lake Chesterfield Using A Combination Of Geophysical Tools, Jiawei Li

Masters Theses

"The Lake Chesterfield North Dam in Wildwood city, Missouri has been leaking, more or less continuously since the dam was constructed in 1986 despite mitigation efforts in 1988, 1994, 1995, 2004, and 2005. Neither the grouting efforts in 1988, 1994, 1995, 2004 or 2005, nor the placement and rehabilitation of an impervious clay liner in 2005 has solved the problem. Indeed, in June of 2017, the water level in Lake Chesterfield dropped at an alarmingly rapid rate.

Prior to authorizing additional mitigation work, the Lake Chesterfield Home Owners Association (LCHOA) decided to acquire geophysical data across the dry lake bed. …

Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk Jan 2018

Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk

Masters Theses

"Insurance claims caused by natural disasters exhibit spatial dependence with the strength of dependence being based on factors such as physical distance and population density, to name a few. Accounting for spatial dependence is therefore of crucial importance when modeling these types of claims. In this work, we present an approach to assess spatially dependent insurance risks using a combination of linear regression and factor copula models. Specifically, in loss modeling, observed dependence patterns are highly nonlinear, thus copula-based models seem appropriate since they can handle both linear and nonlinear dependence. The factor copula approach for estimating the spatial dependence …

Conical Folds -- An Artifact Of Using Simple Geometric Shapes To Describe A Complex Geologic Structure, Avery Joseph Welker Jan 2018

Conical Folds -- An Artifact Of Using Simple Geometric Shapes To Describe A Complex Geologic Structure, Avery Joseph Welker

Masters Theses

"Accurate representation of the 3D shapes of natural folds is essential to characterization of the dynamic models for fold formation. Geometrical analysis of folds commonly relies upon analyzing patterns defined by the variation in the orientation of poles to planar surfaces deformed by a shortening event when plotted using graphical calculators (e.g., stereogram, polar tangent diagrams) to interpret the shape of folds. Stereograms for which orientation data define small circles are classified as non-cylindrical regular folds and are interpreted as "conical folds," where the shape of the fold is represented by a cone that terminates at a point. Utilizing similar …
