Automated Discovery And Interpretation Of Ada-Compliant Door Placards, Dale E. Parson, John J. Feilmeier Dec 2021

Automated Discovery And Interpretation Of Ada-Compliant Door Placards, Dale E. Parson, John J. Feilmeier

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

A familiar difficulty to any new student on campus is making one’s way from classroom A to classroom B. Facilities with different wings, multiple floors, and irregular floorplans can magnify this challenge, while students with vision impairments are impacted even more by the challenge of identifying the destination. This thesis explored different methods of discovering Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)- compliant room identifying placards (“plaques”) and identifying the text on the sign. The plaque detection was accomplished with both standard image manipulation techniques and a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) (Dalal & Triggs, 2005) object detector. The text reading utilized …

Visualizing Decision Trees And Forests Using Radial Trees, Angela Kozma May 2021

Visualizing Decision Trees And Forests Using Radial Trees, Angela Kozma

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

Data visualization has become a big representation of many company’s data and schedules. Now people are not using just simple bar graphs and pie charts in business meetings but utilizing other fields of study and even more complex graphs. By using multiple visualizations to display their results and projects, it is letting more outside people understand what they are working on and can lead to more viewpoints on the topic being displayed. Also, schedules for projects are now being displayed visually so the workers can see how much time each part of their project is going to take. With this …

Simulated Contact Tracing Of Covid-19 Propagation At Kutztown University For Fall 2020, Dale E. Parson Apr 2021

Simulated Contact Tracing Of Covid-19 Propagation At Kutztown University For Fall 2020, Dale E. Parson

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

From mid-May through August 2020 the author designed, built, revised, and analyzed resulting data from two simulation programs for virtual contact tracing of COVID-19 infection propagation at Kutztown University in the fall 2020 semester. The first was command-line driven and non-graphical, with results distributed to faculty and administrators on May 28. The second was a three-dimensional interactive graphical simulation, distributed to faculty, administrators, and the public as a narrated video via YouTube on July 16. The algorithm is an adaptation of spreading activation as used in theoretical psychology and artificial intelligence research since the 1970s. It propagates discrete, probable infections …

Impact Of Whitetail Deer Overpopulation With Hunting On The Decline, Matthew J. Lamprinos Apr 2021

Impact Of Whitetail Deer Overpopulation With Hunting On The Decline, Matthew J. Lamprinos

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

The whitetail deer is a key species for Pennsylvania’s forests, but their ecological balance has been disturbed by unregulated growth and urban sprawl. The deer population in Pennsylvania has exploded since the 1880’s causing a wide range of damage on the ecosystem, and humans. To reduce deer populations to sustainable levels, the Pennsylvania Game Commission relies heavily on hunters to dedicate time in the fall to go out and fill the tags the they issue. Hunter participation all around the world is decreasing for a variety of reasons. Fewer hunters out in the field causes revenue losses for the Game …
