Land Use Of Riparian Zones In Two Communities In The Palcazu Basin, Central Andean Amazon, Peru, Rosa E. Cossio-Solano

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes in forms of riparian zone land use between a native and a colonist community of the Palcazu basin in Peru. Data were gathered through a survey of 79 settler households and an ethnographic study. The results showed that riparian zones are highly valued for the conservation of fertile lowland soils by both communities. Statistical tests showed that riparian land use practices (including non-riparian land use) in both communities are similar; only significant differences were found in the percentage of protection fringe forested, in the area of riparian zone under use and …

Titanium Dioxide Photocatalytic Degradation Of Aliphatic Ethers And Their Primary Oxidation Products, Vivian Cruz Nov 2001

Titanium Dioxide Photocatalytic Degradation Of Aliphatic Ethers And Their Primary Oxidation Products, Vivian Cruz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two studies were performed to obtain fundamental mechanistic information on the TiO2 catalyzed degradation of organic substrates irradiated at 350 nm in dilute aqueous solutions under oxygenated conditions: (a) The photodecomposition of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and its intermediate products from β - oxidation, 2-methoxy-2-methylpropanol and 2-methoxy-2-methylpropanal. (b) The photodecomposition of two haloethers, bis-(2-chloroethyl) ether, and bis-(2-chloroisopropyl) ether. Controls were carried out throughout the two studies in the absence of light, and without the semiconductor in order to evaluate the role of photolysis.

The syntheses of proposed intermediate products, 2-methoxy-2-methylpropanol, 2-methoxy-2-methylpropanal, 2-methoxy-2-methylpropanoic acid, 2-chloroethyl formate, and 1-chloro-2-propyl acetate, …

This thesis is focused on creating a formal architectural specification of a software system. I have used the computer system at the Everglades National Park (ENP) to conduct a case study. The formal method used is called Z ("zeta"). The case study used was performed on some of the software on the ENP computing system. The software is the Hydrology System and consists of a relational database called Data For Ever and several subsystems that support it. The Data For Ever system is a relational database that stores hydrology data from the Everglades. The supporting software tools are the programs …

A Master-Slave Architecture For Parallel Speaker Recognition, Sunil Kumar Godavarthi Jul 2001

A Master-Slave Architecture For Parallel Speaker Recognition, Sunil Kumar Godavarthi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Speaker recognition is one of the popular research interests in speech processing. A speaker recognition system receives the speech signal (data) and determines who the speaker is from a known set of speakers. This process involves the task of matching the input speech signal to the models for all the speakers enrolled in the system. Important factors that determine the success of these systems are response time and accuracy.

The objective of my thesis is to optimize response time by dividing the task of recognition into a number of sub tasks and to execute these individual tasks on load- balanced …

An Analysis Of The South Florida Commuter Assistance Program's Implementation Of Transportation Demand Management Initiatives, Elizabeth Carrera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of implementing Transportation Demand Management (TDM) initiatives with the business community by the South Florida Commuter Assistance Program (CAP). To determine this effectiveness, the south Florida CAP was compared with the two other CAPs operating in the state, by analyzing independent evaluations of the program, and by conducting eight individual company case studies.

Independent evaluations of the south Florida CAP for the years 1997 - 2000 were analyzed and found to have increasing trends in the number of companies adopting TDM initiatives. In addition, each case was selected from the …

Melt Inclusions From Volcan De Colima, Mexico: Complex Examples Of Magmatic Differentiation, Zachary D. Atlas Jul 2001

Melt Inclusions From Volcan De Colima, Mexico: Complex Examples Of Magmatic Differentiation, Zachary D. Atlas

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Melt inclusions are minute magma bodies trapped within growing crystals. Their chemical compositions are useful in deciphering pre-eruptive conditions and magma evolution. The present study examined melt inclusions trapped in phenocrysts from the 3rd and 4th magmatic cycles (1869-1988) at Volcan de Colima, Mexico. Melt inclusions have highly evolved chemical compositions: 65-77% SiO2, >12% A12O3, 3-6% Na2O and K20 and less than 5.5% Fe and Mg. Major element compositions suggest that they are strongly differentiated magmas controlled by fractionation of plagioclase, opx, cpx and hornblende. Water concentrations were …

Geochemical Variation Among Small Eruptive Centers In The Central Svz Of The Andes : An Evaluation Of Subduction, Mantle And Crustal Influences, Murong Sun

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Subduction zone magmatism is an important and extensively studied topic in igneous geochemistry. Recent studies focus on from where arc magmas are generated, how subduction components (fluids or melts) are fluxed into the source of the magmas, and whether or how the subduction components affect partial melting processes beneath volcanic arcs at convergent boundaries.

At 39.5°S in the Central Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes, Volcano Villarrica is surrounded by a suite of Small Eruptive Centers (SEC). The SECs are located mostly to the east and northeast of the stratovolcano and aligned along the Liquine - Ofqui Fault …

Oxidation Of Zeaxanthin And Characterization Of 3'-Alkyl Lutein Ethers, Jie Chi Apr 2001

Oxidation Of Zeaxanthin And Characterization Of 3'-Alkyl Lutein Ethers, Jie Chi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One purpose of this study was to understand the oxidation metabolites of zeaxanthin, another was to prepare, purify, and characterize a series of 3'-alkyl lutein ethers for use as internal standards.

Studies have proven that lutein and zeaxanthin are two of the principal carotenoids in human serum and the only carotenoids found in the retina, but their metabolism and transport in the human body are still only poorly understood. In vitro oxidation of zeaxanthin with MnO2 produced three components. They were characterized by HPLC, UV/Vis, MS, NMR and identified as all-trans rhodoxanthin and its cis-isomers.

3'-alkyl lutein ethers have …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this research was to develop new methodologies to process and analyze large amount of topographic data from airborne LIDAR (light detection and ranging) survey.

This research developed a suite of algorithms to resample dense clouds of point data from LIDAR survey, cut the large data set into smaller tiles, and filtered data to remove points from non-ground surface features such as vegetations, buildings, and vehicles. These algorithms were implemented on the PC platform using C++. The test results showed that the developed application software package based on these algorithms worked well. This application software package provided …

An Approach For Clarification Of The Mechanism Of Inactivation Of Ribonucleotide Reductases With 3'<¹⁷O>-Labeled 2'-Azido-2'-Deoxynucleotides, Saiful Mahmud Chowdhury Jan 2001

An Approach For Clarification Of The Mechanism Of Inactivation Of Ribonucleotide Reductases With 3'<¹⁷O>-Labeled 2'-Azido-2'-Deoxynucleotides, Saiful Mahmud Chowdhury

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inactivation of ribonucleotide reductases by 2'-azido-2'-deoxynucleotides is accompanied by appearance of new EPR signals for a nitrogen-centered radical. The structure of this elusive nitrogen-centered radical has been studied extensively and shown to be derived from azide moiety. Synthesis of 3'[17 O]-labeled 2'-azido-2'-deoxyuridine-5'- diphosphate was targeted in this research. Such a labeled analogue should perturb the EPR spectrum in predictable fashion, and the hyperfine interaction between the free electron and the 17O nucleus should allow the choice between the recently proposed structures of this elusive radical (Van Der Donk, W. A. et al. J Am. Chem. Soc. 1995 …

Japanese, U.S Tourists: Hotel Selections, Minho Cho

Hospitality Review

The author reports the results of an exploratory study concerning the importance placed on attributes of hotel selection by Japanese and American guests and cultural differences between these two groups, which represent the largest market for Korean international tourist hotels. The findings suggest that Hofstede's (1960) four dimensions of cultural values can be used to help marketers better understand their guest's hotel selection criteria.
