Preparation And Study Of Bacterial Membrane Models, Enoch Asimbisa Dec 2021

Preparation And Study Of Bacterial Membrane Models, Enoch Asimbisa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fuel molecules are organic solvents that have disruptive effects on the bacterial membrane. This is a significant barrier in biofuel production, as it limits the fuel concentration that can be achieved through fermentation. One potential way of overcoming this barrier is to identify lipid compositions that can better withstand solvent stress, for which it is important to understand how organic solvents disrupt the membrane. Use of biophysical characterization techniques to quantify physical properties like fluidity and thickness will enable us to understand the mechanism by which solvents disrupt membranes. Native membranes are very complex, and we sought to develop in-vitro …

Studies On The Preparation, Immobilization, And Luminescence Properties Of Zinc Oxide (Zno)Quantum Dots, Yasemin Hakat May 2012

Studies On The Preparation, Immobilization, And Luminescence Properties Of Zinc Oxide (Zno)Quantum Dots, Yasemin Hakat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quantum dots are a part of very important our technological future because of their intriguing and useful properties. These properties are different in character from those of the corresponding bulk material. Quantum dots are inorganic artificial semiconductor nanocrystal whose electrons influence their physical and chemical properties. Zinc oxide quantum dots were synthesized through an ethanol based precipitation via colloidal synthesis method at various pH values. Various emission colors were obtained because the excited quantum dots of various sizes emitted specific wavelengths of light. The emission spectra indicated that the pH dependent quantum dots were successfully synthesized. Zinc oxide quantum dots …

A Study Of The Effects Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On The Fluorescent Intensity Of Fluorescent Compounds In The Presence Of Known Quenchers., Vivian Dzigbodi Koka Dec 2011

A Study Of The Effects Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On The Fluorescent Intensity Of Fluorescent Compounds In The Presence Of Known Quenchers., Vivian Dzigbodi Koka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Titanium Dioxide is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium. It has a wide range of uses in commercial products for providing whiteness and opacity. It has photocatalytic properties and can also be used to produce electricity in its nanoparticles form. This research is focused on investigating the effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in analysis of compounds using luminescence-based techniques. Quenching, which is one of the basic problems of fluorescent measurements, was studied in the presence of molecular oxygen and methyl iodide. The rutile phase of titanium dioxide nanoparticles was synthesized by the acid hydrolysis of titanium isobutoxide at low temperatures …

Quenching Of The Fluorescence Of Tris (2 2-Bipyridine) Ruthenium(Ii) [Ru(Bipy)3]2+ By A Dimeric Copper(Ii) Complex., Kevin E. Cummins Aug 2011

Quenching Of The Fluorescence Of Tris (2 2-Bipyridine) Ruthenium(Ii) [Ru(Bipy)3]2+ By A Dimeric Copper(Ii) Complex., Kevin E. Cummins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quenching of the [Ru(bipy)3]2+ by Cu2L2+ was studied and the data were plotted with the Stern-Volmer equation. The plot showed a break and was divided into 2 regions, <0.5 and >0.5 Cu2L2+: [Ru(bipy)3]2+ molar ratio. Quenching above the 0.5 Cu2L2+: [Ru(bipy)3]2+ molar ratio was slower (330 x 10-6 M-1s-1) than the quenching rate reaction below 0.5 ratio (387 x 10-6 M-1s-1).

With Cu2L2+ being a dimeric complex the …

Studies Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles And Surfactants Effects, Singly And In Combinations, On Luminescence Intensity Of Some Aromatic Compounds., Charles Anim Odame-Ankrah Aug 2009

Studies Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles And Surfactants Effects, Singly And In Combinations, On Luminescence Intensity Of Some Aromatic Compounds., Charles Anim Odame-Ankrah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Luminescence techniques are sensitive, selective, and widely used in analysis. Luminescence intensity is attenuated by quenchers. This research has focused on the use of surfactants such as CTAB, SDS, and TX-100 singly or together with TiO2 nanoparticles to evaluate their individual and combined effects on some fluorescent aromatic compounds such as pyrene, fluoranthene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and carbazole. Rutile phase TiO2 was synthesized using the low temperature sol-gel method. Carbazole and phenanthrene were severely quenched by all surfactants singly or in combination with TiO2. Anthracene and fluoranthene showed some enhancement in their luminescence intensity. The most dramatic …

Studies Of Surfactants Effect On Riboflavin Fluorescence And Its Determination In Commercial Food Products And Vitamin Tablets., William Emmanuel Ghann Dec 2008

Studies Of Surfactants Effect On Riboflavin Fluorescence And Its Determination In Commercial Food Products And Vitamin Tablets., William Emmanuel Ghann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A simple and economical fluorometer using blue LEDs excitation sources and simple PMT detection had been built, assembled, optimized, and employed for measurement of fluorescence from riboflavin (vitamin B2). Surfactants have been known to enhance the intensity of fluorescence of fluorescent compounds. Fluorescence analysis of riboflavin in the presence of various anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants was also conducted to determine if they could improve analysis. However, the surfactants employed did not seem to have any meaningful enhancement; in fact, some actually diminished the fluorescence intensity of riboflavin. The procedure was linear for riboflavin from 0.01 to 2.5 …
