Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are growing in popularity in the chemistry community to replace traditional laboratory courses. This approach creates a research experience for a larger number of students than traditional research mentorship experiences offered at universities. CUREs can help students take ownership of projects, learn to design and troubleshoot experimental setups, problem-solve experiments that don’t have a “known answer”, and gain confidence in the laboratory. In this thesis, I am investigating the optical variability of Green Pea galaxies (GPs). GPs are good analogs to high-redshift galaxies, enabling us to learn more about the first galaxies in the universe. One of their key properties is their strong emission lines, some of which indicate the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). An effective way to identify AGN is to look for stochastic variability in the optical light from the galaxy. Class I and Class II methanol (CH3OH) masers are believed to be good indicators for regions where high mass stars are being formed. High mass stars are important because they inuence the evolution of the Galaxy, but many details of their formation remain unknown. Broyden’s method is a quasi-Newton iterative method used to find roots of non-linear systems of equations. Research has shown and improved the rate of convergence for special cases and specific applications of the method. However, there is limited literature regarding the well-posedness of the method. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form an important symbiosis with plants that make these fungi critical for plant health and ecosystem functioning. Novel alkyl ring-substituted octyl phenylcyanoacrylates (OPCA), RPhCH=C(CN)CO2CH2(CH2)6CH3, where R is H, 2-methyl, 3-methyl, 4-methyl, 4-ethyl, 4-propyl, 4-i-propyl, 4-butyl, 4-t-butyl, 4-i-butyl) were prepared and copolymerized with styrene. The ethylenes were synthesized by the piperidine catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of ring-substituted benzaldehydes and octyl cyanoacetate, and characterized by CHN analysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR. All the ethylenes were copolymerized with styrene in solution with radical initiation (ABCN) at 70°C. The compositions of the copolymers were calculated from nitrogen analysis. One of the goals of astrophysics is to obtain a full understanding how the Universe is organized on large scales and how structure evolved. In this thesis we develop a method of detecting structure on Mpc scales by measuring the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted ux in the Lyman- forest. The method is based on the wavelet packet transform (WPT), which has several advantages over the Fourier transform. This includes reduced noise, resulting in less data manipulation and scrubbing in the early stages of analysis. Classical models of thermal transport breakdown at lengthscales below a few microns in many materials, including the surfaces of bulk semiconductors. This presents difficulties in the analysis and design of small electronic devices, where unexpected thermal effects can occur such as hot spots that deteriorate performance and limit speed. In soft-matter physics, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) stands out as the non-invasive technique designed to measure the size and distribution of particles using speckle correlation. Traditional DLS analysis performs a one-to-one mapping of the size with diffusion which is computationally costly, in addition to lacks in generalisation to seek deeper relationships amongst speckle patterns. ZIGO, the x = 0 endpoint, is a potential transparent conducting oxide (TCO) with similar conductivity and transparency to cubic In2O3, which, when doped with Sn4+, is the most prevalent TCO. Novel trisubstituted ethylenes (TSE), chloro and fluoro 2-cyano-3-phenyl-2-propenoic propenoates (XPhCH=C(CN)CO2CH(CH3)2) were prepared and copolymerized with styrene (ST). The monomers were synthesized by modified crossed aldol condensation reaction (Knoevenagel condensation) of chloro and fluoro ring-substituted benzaldehydes with isopropyl cyanoacetate using piperidine as catalyst. They were subsequently characterized by IR, 1H and 13C-NMR and CHN analysis as well. The novel TSE monomers formed were then copolymerized with styrene (ST) in solution at 70 °C and 1,1′-Azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile) (ABCN) was used as radical initiator of the reaction. In this study, we examined interactions within student groups and between groups and instructors. A deeper exploration of group dynamics helps educators to more fully understand student groups and student learning within the classroom. Our data are from a two-week summer program for incoming college freshman that focuses on helping students develop metacognitive and self-assessment tools. With the intention of using Social Network Analysis (SNA), we took the novel approach of creating network graphs from video data as opposed to surveys. Globular clusters are the oldest objects in the Milky Way, serving as probes of early galactic evolution due to their chemically uncontaminated history. Compact binaries act as an internal energy source through their dynamical interactions, and measuring the types of X-ray binaries within a cluster provides an understanding of its stellar population and dynamics, as stellar collisional frequencies have been correlated to the number of X-ray sources detected in globular clusters. It is commonly used in medical applications as a filler for damaged bone, and in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. A laser of 0.800 mm at 100 fs is utilized in obtaining a b coefficient in a GaP crystal associated with double photon absorption. Data is collected for the incident power of the laser for both single and double photon absorption, and it is plotted against the signal generated in the photodiode containing the GaP crystal. The slope of such a plot is employed in calculating b with equations derived in the theoretical model that is unique to the present work. We use the method of wavelet transforms to investigate the clustering of matter on galactic scales in search of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs). In particular, we develop a method of wavelet packet analysis to measure the power spectrum of a galaxy distribution and apply this method to the CMASS galaxy catalogue from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) collaboration. Tetrahydroisoquinolines (THI) are biologically active natural products with applications to a variety of diseases. These compounds also act as precursors for other pharmacologically active natural products. In this investigation, a new synthetic approach for generation of halogenated THIs was proposed. Using cross-linked tyrosinase aggregate, halogenated tyrosine and tyramine were oxidized to form halogenated catechols such as halogenated L-DOPA and dopamine. In a one-pot synthetic approach, the enzyme oxidation reaction was coupled to the Pictet-Spengler reaction, through the addition of an aldehyde, to generate halogenated THIs. There is an extensive history of the use of alkaloids for medicinal purposes. Today, development of novel pharmaceutical alkaloids is imperative to developing effective drugs. The Pictet-Spengler reaction of dopamine with 4-hydroxyphenyl-acetaldehyde is the first step in the biosynthesis of thousands of known alkaloids. In this reaction, mechanisms have been proposed to explain the specificity of phosphate catalysis. However, the uniqueness of the phosphate ion in the Pictet-Spengler reaction is not explained. The structural dynamics of the fusion protein (F protein) of parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV 5) was studied using time resolved Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). Conformational changes of the F protein, equivalent to the conformational changes the protein must undergo while infecting a host cell, are triggered by temperature jump to the protein in solution. The time and temperature dependence of the rate of the protein changing state is then determined through standard SAXS analysis. Thermodynamic transition state theory is then used to calculate the activation energy, enthalpy and entropy of the transition which is independent of any particular model. …

One of these approaches is precursor-directed biosynthesis (PDB), which is the process of using natural biosynthetic machinery to transform unnatural analogues of precursor compounds to produce an unnatural analogue of a target natural product. Berberine and galanthamine are chosen as model systems for the evaluation of PDB for the production of aromatic alkaloids in plants. This thesis presents new solution structures of two proteins:cold denatured equine cytochrome-c,and mitochondrial rho (miro).Cytochrome-cis a modelsystem for protein folding and stability studies;this work demonstrates the interplay of thermodynamic forces in determining the global shape of unfolded proteins.Whereas denatured cytochrome-cis not able to form crystals in principle,miro is a newly purified protein of which no crystal structure is availablein any conditions.We have used our SAXS data to verify conjectures for miro's structure based solely on protein sequence analysis.

Zinc oxide is an n-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which is used in solar cells and optoelectronics devices. ZnO has the potential to become the future choice for a wide range of TCO commercial applications replacing the current, more expensive, and toxic indium-based materials. The isothermal grain growth of ZnO nano-powders with two different initial grain sizes and the effect of forming gas reduction on their electrical properties were studied at 900 °C.
