A Flume Experiment On The Effect Of Constriction Shape On The Formation Of Forced Pools, Douglas M. Thompson, C. R. Mccarrick

Physics, Astronomy and Geophysics Faculty Publications

A series of 18 flume runs were conducted in a 6-m long, 0.5-m wide recirculating flume with a bed gradient of 0.8% to determine the influence of obstruction shape on the formation and characteristics of forced pools. Six different-shaped obstructions were added to the flume with the maximum width of the obstruction held constant at 20 cm, which equaled a 40% constriction of flow. The obstruction shapes used included a square, a rectangle, a right triangle with the hypotenuse-facing upstream, a right triangle with the hypotenuse-facing downstream, a combination of a square and triangle with the hypotenuse-facing upstream, and a …

President Higdon's 92nd Commencement Address, Leo I. Higdon, Jr. May 2010

President Higdon's 92nd Commencement Address, Leo I. Higdon, Jr.

Commencement Addresses

President Higdon tells graduates they are graduating at a pivotal time in U.S. history – indeed, in the history of the world. In a global economic upheaval, traditional companies and organizations seek to redefine themselves and the work they do. Increasingly, they will look to this generation, and specifically to liberal arts graduates, for answers whose comprehensive education has given them the qualities to succeed in the global arena. They are graduating at an important point in Connecticut College’s history, with a Centennial Celebration ahead that will involve them and all the College community, honoring the College’s legacy of excellence …

Abundance Of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea And Bacteria Along An Estuarine Salinity Gradient In Relationship To Potential Nitrification Rates, Anne E. Bernhard, Zachary C. Landry, Alison Blevins, José R. De La Torre, Anne E. Giblin, David A. Stahl Feb 2010

Abundance Of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea And Bacteria Along An Estuarine Salinity Gradient In Relationship To Potential Nitrification Rates, Anne E. Bernhard, Zachary C. Landry, Alison Blevins, José R. De La Torre, Anne E. Giblin, David A. Stahl

Biology Faculty Publications

Abundance of ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) was found to be always greater than that of ammonia-oxidizing Bacteria along an estuarine salinity gradient, and AOA abundance was highest at intermediate salinity. However, AOA abundance did not correlate with potential nitrification rates. This lack of correlation may be due to methodological limitations or alternative energy sources.

Pollution And Public Health In A Shrinking World: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations As A Paradigm For Emergent Needs In Environmental And Public Health Policy, Leland Stillman Jan 2010

Pollution And Public Health In A Shrinking World: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations As A Paradigm For Emergent Needs In Environmental And Public Health Policy, Leland Stillman

Self-Designed Majors Honors Papers

Environmental factors play a major part in human health. Environmental pollutants are often as poisonous to humans as the environment. Presently, much time and energy is dedicated to keeping pollution apart from human society, with varying success. But as global population densities rise, current levels of pollution will become inviable due to public health concerns. An emergent example of this is in the concentration of livestock operations. Recent changes in the structure of U.S. hog farming have resulted in an industry-wide shift from small or medium production farms to high capacity, “concentrated animal feeding operations” (CAFO). These operations have become …
