The antiparkinsonian drug trihexyphenidyl (THP) is currently manufactured and administered as a racemate. However, stereochemistry can play significant role in the drug’s pharmacokinetics, biotransformation, metabolism, interaction with cellular and tissue components and overall effect on human body. It is necessary to consider such a drug as a mixture of two compounds (drug enantiomers), with their own effect on the human body. The present paper describes a simple and sensitive LC–MS method for the stereoselective determination of THP in human serum. Configurational Entropy And Collective Modes In Normal And Supercooled Liquids, Ulrich Zürcher, T. Keyes

Soft vibrational modes have been used to explain anomalous thermal properties of glasses above 1 K. The soft-potential model consists of a collection of double-well potentials that are distorted by a linear term representing local stress in the liquid. Double-well modes contribute to the configurational entropy of the system. Based on the Adam-Gibbs theory of entropically driven relaxation in liquids, we show that the presence of stress drives the transition from Arrhenius to Zwanzig-Bässler temperature dependence of relaxation times. Community-based organizations (CBOs) today seek improved capacity to address environmental problems in urban neighbourhoods. Many seek access to information technologies such as the Internet and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to expand information about their neighbourhood's environmental quality to support their planning and service efforts. Experience with the Internet has been bolstered somewhat by programmes to create community networks. This experience and experience with GIS in planning at the municipal and state levels reveals a set of technical, organizational and personal prerequisites that bolster successful and effective adoption of information technologies. The utility of the one-beam cross-correlation dynamic light-scattering system for sizing small particles in suspension was previously limited by its small-intensity signal-to-baseline ratio for strongly turbid suspensions. We describe three improvements in the optical system and sample cell that raise the ratio to a value comparable with that of other cross-correlation dynamic light-scattering systems. These improvements are (i) using a square cross-sectional sample cell to minimize the attenuation of the incident beam and singly scattered light, (ii) placing a 200-mu m-wide slit between the sample cell and the detector fibers to mask off the region of weak single scattering and …

When a laser beam scatters from a microparticle whose shape deviates from that of a sphere, a number of partial waves of the incident beam couple to a given partial wave of the scattered and interior fields. As a result, partial-wave coupling caused by small surface irregularities of a liquid droplet provides the mechanism for exciting low-radial-order morphology-dependent resonances. [2,3:5,6]Dibenzo[2.2.2]Octa-2,5,7-Triene (C2/C) And [2,3:5,6]Dibenzo[2.2.2]Octa-2,5-Diene, Lary Burrows, John M. Masnovi, Ronald J. Baker

Two barrelene homologs are reported. Strain in the bicyclic framework of [2,3:5,6]dibenzo[2.2.2]octa-2,5,7- triene, (I) (C16H12), which is manifest in the deviations from ideality of the bond angles in the central bicyclic ringoSyStem and compression of the double bond [1.312 (3)A], is reduced in the more saturated derivative, [2,3:5,6]dibenzo[2.2.2]octa-2,5-diene, (II) (CI6H14), with the corresponding single bond being 1.5380 (19)A. The formation of isomorphs of (I) in both chiral (C2) and achiral (C2/c) space groups has implications for asymmetric syntheses involving solid (I) which rely on a non-centrosymmetric space group.

The Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center conducted a technical assistance workshop for Gary, Indiana officials on June 29, 1999. This workshop represented an important step in the city’s efforts to address its brownfields cleanup and redevelopment needs. The city has begun its participation in a regionally-awarded brownfields pilot grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The workshop agenda focused discussion on overcoming the barriers to brownfields redevelopment and the financing basics of brownfields redevelopment. These topics were discussed in the context of the redevelopment of the Airport Development Zone and a major area of Gary’s waterfront.

In May 1999, the Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center (GLEFC) conducted a strategy-building workshop in Duluth, Minnesota. The purpose of the workshop was to assist the City of Duluth in its efforts to develop actions leading to the successful redevelopment of the USX/Cement Plant site. Particular emphasis was placed on financing strategies pertinent to properties with a history of environmental contamination, often characterized as brownfields. Due to its long history as an industrial site, the 65-acre Cement Plant had its share of perceived environmental contamination, as well as real contaminants detected during previous site assessments and a current Phase I …
