Qualitative Comparison Of Offset Surfaces Between The Central And Eastern Garlock Fault, Thomas M. Crane Dec 2014

Qualitative Comparison Of Offset Surfaces Between The Central And Eastern Garlock Fault, Thomas M. Crane

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Garlock Fault consists of three distinct segments, known as western, central, and eastern, together reaching approximately 260 km from the San Andreas Fault to the southern end of Death Valley. Although published slip rates are available along the western and central Garlock Fault segments, little is currently known of the Garlock Fault earthquake history or slip rate farther east. Using LiDAR and satellite imagery, the central and eastern Garlock Fault segments were analyzed for visibly offset, fault-adjacent, geomorphic surfaces that may potentially be used for estimating slip rate. Qualitative methods of assessing preserved alluvial surface maturity were adapted and …

Refraction Microtremor Analysis Of Areas Surrounding California State University San Bernardino, Malcolm D. Thomas Dec 2014

Refraction Microtremor Analysis Of Areas Surrounding California State University San Bernardino, Malcolm D. Thomas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The San Andreas Fault stretches for over 800 miles through California. Along the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, areas in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault Zone may be subject to site amplification of ground motion caused by seismic activity via wave propagation through the subsurface. These seismic hazards are being addressed via the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Faulting Zone Act and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). Shear wave velocity of the subsurface has served as a proxy for ground motion amplification and is therefore a useful parameter to help analyze and reduce seismic hazards. Low shear wave …

Radio Number For Fourth Power Paths, Linda V. Alegria Dec 2014

Radio Number For Fourth Power Paths, Linda V. Alegria

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A path on n vertices, denoted by Pn, is a simple graph whose vertices can be ordered so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are consecutive in the order. A fourth power path, Pn4, is obtained from Pn by adding edges between any two vertices, u and v, whose distance in Pn, denoted by dPn(u,v), is less than or equal to four. The diameter of a graph G, denoted diam(G) is the greatest distance between any two distinct vertices of G. A radio labeling of a graph G is a function f that assigns to each …

Degradation Of Protective Glove Materials Exposed To Commercial Products: A Comparative Study Of Tensile Strength And Gravimetric Analyses, Todd B. Pelham Sep 2014

Degradation Of Protective Glove Materials Exposed To Commercial Products: A Comparative Study Of Tensile Strength And Gravimetric Analyses, Todd B. Pelham

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Current glove guides attempt to assist in recommending which type of glove is appropriate for handling chemicals; however, they include information on less than 1% of the 89 million chemical products available today.

This study offers a solution by testing five durable polymer materials against 50 chemicals, using two rapid chemical degradation assessment techniques. The first technique involves gravimetric analysis of the weight change following constant immersion against the chemical mixture. The second method uses tensile strength to assess molecular changes in the polymer structure.

This study is focused on addressing three issues of concern. First, this study examines …

Economic Geology Of The San Bernardino Mountains, California, Nicolette Deannah Grill Sep 2014

Economic Geology Of The San Bernardino Mountains, California, Nicolette Deannah Grill

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The San Bernardino Mountains are well known for their rich mining history, especially, gold in the mid-1800s and the current mining of one of the world’s largest deposits of high purity limestone. The purpose of this study was to compile new, current, and historical data of the major economic resources that are present and mining that has gone on in the San Bernardino Mountains. It is estimated that historical mining of the Holcomb Valley recovered $457,660,000 of gold or about 350,000 troy ounces based on samples collected for this study and 2013 gold price. The current major geologic resource is …

Surface Area As A Method For The Determination Of Glove Degradation, Kandace M. Steele Sep 2014

Surface Area As A Method For The Determination Of Glove Degradation, Kandace M. Steele

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Gloves are an important aspect of personal protective equipment. They protect workers from chemical hazards as well as reduce the risk of exposure to infectious material. Chemical resistant gloves are made from a variety of polymer materials such as plastic, rubber, and synthetic rubber, as not one material provides protection against all chemicals. One type of polymer material may adequately protect against a specific chemical, but may not adequately protect against another. Experiments, such as degradation tests, are used to determine which material is most effective for each chemical tested. Current methods of degradation ratings are based on weight change, …

Monoid Rings And Strongly Two-Generated Ideals, Brittney M. Salt Jun 2014

Monoid Rings And Strongly Two-Generated Ideals, Brittney M. Salt

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This paper determines whether monoid rings with the two-generator property have the strong two-generator property. Dedekind domains have both the two-generator and strong two-generator properties. How common is this? Two cases are considered here: the zero-dimensional case and the one-dimensional case for monoid rings. Each case is looked at to determine if monoid rings that are not PIRs but are two-generated have the strong two-generator property. Full results are given in the zero-dimensional case, however only partial results have been found for the one-dimensional case.

Introducing Non-Determinism To The Parallel C Compiler, Rowen Concepcion Jun 2014

Introducing Non-Determinism To The Parallel C Compiler, Rowen Concepcion

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Planguages project is the birthplace of the Planguage programming
approach, which is designed to alleviate the task of writing parallel
programs and harness massively parallel computers and networks of workstations.

Planguage has two existing translators, Parallel C (PC) and Pfortran,
which is used for their base languages, C and Fortran77. The translators
work with MPI (Message Passing Interface) for communications. SOS
(ipStreams, Overlapping and Shortcutting), a function library that supports
the three named functionalities, can be used to further optimize parallel algorithms.

This project is the next step in the continuing project of updating
the PC Compiler. The goal …

A Kleinian Approach To Fundamental Regions, Joshua L. Hidalgo Jun 2014

A Kleinian Approach To Fundamental Regions, Joshua L. Hidalgo

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis takes a Kleinian approach to hyperbolic geometry in order to illustrate the importance of discrete subgroups and their fundamental domains (fundamental regions). A brief history of Euclids Parallel Postulate and its relation to the discovery of hyperbolic geometry be given first. We will explore two models of hyperbolic $n$-space: $U^n$ and $B^n$. Points, lines, distances, and spheres of these two models will be defined and examples in $U^2$, $U^3$, and $B^2$ will be given. We will then discuss the isometries of $U^n$ and $B^n$. These isometries, known as M\"obius transformations, have special properties and turn out to be …

On The Evolution Of Virulence, Thi Nguyen Jun 2014

On The Evolution Of Virulence, Thi Nguyen

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to study the dynamics behind the evolution of virulence. We examine first the underlying mechanics of linear systems of ordinary differential equations by investigating the classification of fixed points in these systems, then applying these techniques to nonlinear systems. We then seek to establish the validity of a system that models the population dynamics of uninfected and infected hosts---first with one parasite strain, then n strains. We define the basic reproductive ratio of a parasite, and study its relationship to the evolution of virulence. Lastly, we investigate the mathematics behind superinfection.

The Linear Cutwidth And Cyclic Cutwidth Of Complete N-Partite Graphs, Stephanie A. Creswell Jun 2014

The Linear Cutwidth And Cyclic Cutwidth Of Complete N-Partite Graphs, Stephanie A. Creswell

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The cutwidth of different graphs is a topic that has been extensively studied. The basis of this paper is the cutwidth of complete n-partite graphs. While looking at the cutwidth of complete n-partite graphs, we strictly consider the linear embedding and cyclic embedding. The relationship between the linear cutwidth and the cyclic cutwidth is discussed and used throughout multiple proofs of different cases for the cyclic cutwidth. All the known cases for the linear and cyclic cutwidth of complete bipartite, complete tripartite, and complete n-partite graphs are highlighted.

The main focus of this paper is to expand …

Homormophic Images And Their Isomorphism Types, Diana Herrera Jun 2014

Homormophic Images And Their Isomorphism Types, Diana Herrera

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this thesis we have presented original homomorphic images of permutations and monomial progenitors. In some cases we have used the double coset enumeration tech- nique to construct the images and for all of the homomorphic images that we have discovered, the isomorphism type of each group is given. The homomorphic images discovered include Linear groups, Alternating groups, and two sporadic simple groups J1 and J2X2 where J1 is the smallest Janko group and J2 is the second Janko sporadic group.

Proton Computed Tomography: Matrix Data Generation Through General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit Reconstruction, Micah Witt Mar 2014

Proton Computed Tomography: Matrix Data Generation Through General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit Reconstruction, Micah Witt

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Proton computed tomography (pCT) is an image modality that will improve treatment planning for patients receiving proton radiation therapy compared with the current techniques, which are based on X-ray CT. Images are reconstructed in pCT by solving a large and sparse system of linear equations. The size of the system necessitates matrix-partitioning and parallel reconstruction algorithms to be implemented across some sort of cluster computing architecture. The prototypical algorithm to solve the pCT system is the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) that has been modified into parallel versions called block-iterative-projection (BIP) methods and string-averaging-projection (SAP) methods. General purpose graphics processing units …

The Irreducible Representations Of D2n, Melissa Soto Mar 2014

The Irreducible Representations Of D2n, Melissa Soto

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Irreducible representations of a finite group over a field are important because all representations of a group are direct sums of irreducible representations. Maschke tells us that if φ is a representation of the finite group G of order n on the m-dimensional space V over the field K of complex numbers and if U is an invariant subspace of φ, then U has a complementary reducing subspace W .

The objective of this thesis is to find all irreducible representations of the dihedral group D2n. The reason we will work with the dihedral group is because it is one …
