Clay Mineralogy And Paleoclimatic Properties Of The Neogene Deposits In Sinanpaşa Basin (Afyon-Western Anatolia), Elif Akiska, Zehra Karakaş
Clay Mineralogy And Paleoclimatic Properties Of The Neogene Deposits In Sinanpaşa Basin (Afyon-Western Anatolia), Elif Akiska, Zehra Karakaş
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The Sinanpaşa basin, one of the Neogene basins formed in the extensional tectonic regime in Western Anatolia, is located on the eastern margin of Western Anatolia basins containing different types of evaporites, lignite, uranium and clay minerals. Miocene sequence was initiated with alluvial fanfluvial units and followed by lacustrine sediments. River floodplains and lakeshore marshes locally contain economic coal levels. Since middle-late Miocene, the products of Afyon volcanism were deposited into a subaerial or a subaqueous environment alternating with lake sediments. Dominant clay minerals are illite and smectite within the sediments coexistence with the volcanics. These minerals were accompanied by …
Petrographic And Palynological Investigations Of Sinanpaşa (Afyon) Miocene Coals, Elif Akiska
Petrographic And Palynological Investigations Of Sinanpaşa (Afyon) Miocene Coals, Elif Akiska
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
In this study, petrographical and palynological analyses of coal samples from two regions (the Kırka region in the south, and the Karacaören region in the north) of the Sinanpaşa (Afyon) Neogene basin were performed. The coal-bearing Neogene sediments indicate the occurrence of fi ve facies: paleosol, matrix-supported conglomerate, coal-bearing mudstone, sandstone-claystone and laminated mudstones. Coal layers are mainly within coal-bearing mudstone facies. In addition, there are various types of coalifi ed materials in matrix-supported conglomerate and sandstone-claystone facies. Based on coal petrography, an interpretation of the coal-forming environment was made. The investigated coals mainly contain a huminite maceral group. From …
Late Pleistocene Glaciations And Paleoclimate Of Turkey, Mehmet Akif Sarikaya, Atilla Çi̇ner
Late Pleistocene Glaciations And Paleoclimate Of Turkey, Mehmet Akif Sarikaya, Atilla Çi̇ner
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
Glaciers respond quickly to climatic changes and thus they are considered to be very accurate indicators of changes in atmospheric conditions. Similarly, the extent of past glaciers gives valuable insights into paleoclimatic changes. For this purpose, we reviewed the paleo-glaciated mountains where cosmogenic surface exposure dating was applied inTurkey. We also evaluated the paleoclimatic results obtained from these studies to provide a regional overview. Twenty-seven mountains in Turkey are high enough to support Quaternary valley glaciers or ice caps. The timing of glaciations was reported mainly by cosmogenic dating of moraines. We re-evaluated the dated sites and recalculated some of …
