Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Students frequently face heightened stress due to academic and social pressures, particularly in de- manding fields like computer science and engineering. These challenges are often associated with serious mental health issues, including ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), depression, and an increased risk of suicide. The average student attention span has notably decreased from 21⁄2 minutes to just 47 seconds, and now it typically takes about 25 minutes to switch attention to a new task (Mark, 2023). Research findings suggest that over 95% of individuals who die by suicide have been diagnosed with depression (Shahtahmasebi, 2013), and almost 20% of students …

Designing An Overseas Experiential Course In Data Science, Hua Leong Fwa, Graham Ng Dec 2023

Designing An Overseas Experiential Course In Data Science, Hua Leong Fwa, Graham Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unprecedented demand for data science professionals in the industry has led to many educational institutions launching new data science courses. It is however imperative that students of data science programmes learn through execution of real-world, authentic projects on top of acquiring foundational knowledge on the basics of data science. In the process of working on authentic, real-world projects, students not only create new knowledge but also learn to solve open, sophisticated, and ill-structured problems in an inter-disciplinary fashion. In this paper, we detailed our approach to design a data science curriculum premised on learners solving authentic data science problems sourced …

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Every year, the College of Engineering (CENG) students and faculty reach out to admitted students through “Text-a-Thon” programs to answer their questions about being a student at Cal Poly. In order to improve CENG outreach efforts, we analyzed these text conversations to predict the likelihood of an admitted student accepting an offer of admission from Cal Poly. Through our research, we discovered key factors that play a role in a student committing to Cal Poly through data-based insights. Additionally, we successfully used a human-on-the-loop system to help create Machine Learning (ML) models that predict satisfaction of response by way of …

The future of AI-assisted individualized learning includes computer vision to inform intelligent tutors and teachers about student affect, motivation and performance. Facial expression recognition is essential in recognizing subtle differences when students ask for hints or fail to solve problems. Facial features and classification labels enable intelligent tutors to predict students’ performance and recommend activities. Videos can capture students’ faces and model their effort and progress; machine learning classifiers can support intelligent tutors to provide interventions. One goal of this research is to support deep dives by teachers to identify students’ individual needs through facial expression and to provide immediate …

An Optimized Bagging Ensemble Learning Approach Using Bestrees For Predicting Students’ Performance, Edmund Evangelista May 2023

An Optimized Bagging Ensemble Learning Approach Using Bestrees For Predicting Students’ Performance, Edmund Evangelista

All Works

Every academic institution's goal is to identify students who require additional assistance and take appropriate actions to improve their performance. As such, various research studies have focused on developing prediction models that can detect correlated patterns influencing students' performance, dropout, collaboration, and engagement. Among the influential predictive models available, the bagging ensemble has captured the interest of researchers seeking to improve prediction accuracy over single classifiers. However, prior work in this area has focused mainly on selecting single classifiers as the base classifier of the bagging ensemble, with little to no further optimization of the proposed framework. This study aims …

Investigating Collaborative Problem Solving Temporal Dynamics Using Interactions Within A Digital Whiteboard, Hua Leong Fwa Apr 2023

Investigating Collaborative Problem Solving Temporal Dynamics Using Interactions Within A Digital Whiteboard, Hua Leong Fwa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Collaborative Problem Solving, the resolution of complex problems with the collaboration of multiple peoplepooling their knowledge, skills and effort is postulated as an essential 21st century skills for the futureworkforce. Collaborative Problem Solving has been embraced in schools where both online and face-to-face collaboration are afforded through the proliferation of educational technology tools. Assessing the amount of collaboration that has taken place among the students has however been challenging. In this research, we seek to identify the collaboration patterns of our students by mining the temporal sequence of their actions logs captured within a digital whiteboard tool. With the use …
