Environmental Research With Undergraduates In East Asia: Collaborations In China And Japan, Gary A. Morris, Jon Schoer
Gary A. Morris
China: From 2007-2008 as part of a collaborative research project funded by the ASIANetwork, VU and the VLACD, 5 VU students (2 chemistry, 1 biology, 1 environmental science, and 1 civil engineering) spent 3 weeks in Zhejiang province, China and 7 additional weeks in northwest Indiana comparing and contrasting water quality issues and attitudes in the two regions. While in China, the students interacted with one another and graduate students, faculty, and staff from Zhejiang University and Zhejiang A &F University, and with multiple local & regional officials and residents to collect water quality data and opinions about key water …

Environmental Problems Of Industrialization And Sustainable Development In Nigeria - A Review, Adejoh Iyaji
Environmental Problems Of Industrialization And Sustainable Development In Nigeria - A Review, Adejoh Iyaji
Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
The main objective of this paper is to examine the impact of the quest for industrialization on the environment in Nigeria; others include, the identification of the objectives of sustainable development as well as making recommendations that will lead to the much needed sustainable environment both for the present generation and generations yet unborn. The researcher relied principally on secondary sources of data for this paper which is theoretical in approach. Findings revealed the emergence of a host of environmental problems such as air pollution, deforestation, desertification, solid and hazardous waste problems in the wake of the quest for industrialization. …
Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer
Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
A central focus of intelligence is the identification, analysis and assessment of threat. However, as acknowledged by intelligence practitioners, threat assessment lags behind the related field of risk assessment. This paper highlights how definitions of threat currently favoured by intelligence agencies are primarily based on threatening entities alone. Consequently, assessments of threat are almost singularly concerned with understanding an identified enemy’s intentions and capabilities. This ‘enemy-centric’ approach to intelligence analysis has recently come in for criticism. In particular, the shortcomings of the current approach become apparent where the focus of intelligence analysis is on threats from difficult-to-identify sub-state or non-state …
The 2011 American State Litter Scorecard:New Rankings For An Increasingly Environmentally Concerned Population, Stephen [Steve] L. Spacek
The 2011 American State Litter Scorecard:New Rankings For An Increasingly Environmentally Concerned Population, Stephen [Steve] L. Spacek
Stephen [Steve] L Spacek
By popular demand--a NEW, up-to-date State Litter "Scorecard" is now released for the 2011 ASPA Baltimore event--measuring each state’s overall environmental quality through public property/spaces debris removal efforts. The “CARD” uses tried-and-true, hard-to-publicly obtain objective and subjective measures, leading to a total overall score for each measured jurisdiction. Readers can thus gain a realistic "picture" of "what's going on" within one or all of the 50 states. Littering/dumping remains harmful, serious American environmental crimes, creating dangers to public health and safety, and contributing to the deaths of over 800 Americans in debris-attributed motor vehicle accidents. The first, original 2008 Scorecard …
The Response Of Fish Larvae To Decadal Changes In Environmental Forcing Factors Off The Oregon Coast, Toby D. Auth, Richard D. Brodeur, Heather L. Soulen, Lorenzo Ciannelli, William T. Peterson
The Response Of Fish Larvae To Decadal Changes In Environmental Forcing Factors Off The Oregon Coast, Toby D. Auth, Richard D. Brodeur, Heather L. Soulen, Lorenzo Ciannelli, William T. Peterson
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We conducted a statistical analysis to characterize the influence of large-scale and local environmental factors on presence-absence, concentration, and assemblage structure of larval fish within the northern California Current (NCC) ecosystem, based on samples collected at two nearshore stations along the Newport Hydrographic line off the central Oregon coast. Data from 1996 to 2005 were compared with historical data from the 1970s and 1980s to evaluate pseudo-decadal, annual, and seasonal variability. Our results indicate that the most abundant taxa from 1996 to 2005 differ from those of earlier decades. Concentrations of the dominant taxa and total larvae were generally greater …
Public Awareness About Global Warming In Hyderabad, India, Vani Sarraju Rao
Public Awareness About Global Warming In Hyderabad, India, Vani Sarraju Rao
Master's Theses
This study addressed public perceptions and awareness about global warming in India through a survey of 851 subjects in the city of Hyderabad in the year 2007. A stratified sample of nine segments of society showed that, although people consider global warming a serious problem, they do not clearly understand its causes, impacts, and solutions. The data analyses using paired T-tests indicated differences in levels of awareness about global warming, across age and education. ANOVA and regression analysis suggested that levels of awareness among respondents varied according to their occupation. The degree of seriousness with which subjects viewed global warming …

Novel Lc-Ms Methods For The Determination Of Environmental And Food Contaminants Incorporating Analyte Confirmation Using High Resolution Ms, Michael George Cahill
Theses
The contamination of the aquatic environment with pesticides has become an emerging environmental issue because of the potential risk to human health and wildlife. Effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as an important source of microorganic contaminants in the environment. The EC have implemented several directives for the control of pesticides in the environment including the 98/83/EEC directive establishing the concentration of pesticide allowed for human consumption, the 2000/60/EC directive set up to monitor priority pollutants that are hazardous substances in the environment and REACH ensuring these substances are registered, controlled, therefore ensuring that the industry is …
Sustainability Reporting Of Eighteen Fortune 500 General Merchandising Companies: How These Companies Address World Environmental And Social Issues, Jaclyn D'Arcy
CMC Senior Theses
Climate change affects the health of people and the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published research that explains the danger of greenhouse gas emissions on humans, wildlife, and the planet. Initiatives and policies are enacted every day to counter the harm that is done to the environment. Many companies now publish environmental impact reports or Corporate Sustainability Reports (CSR) to promote industry transparency. Participating in environmental and social initiatives is also a competitive advantage for these Fortune 500 companies. Customers can support a company based on their environmental friendliness or social responsibility. Companies are then encouraged to …
Collaboration And Climate Action At The Local Scale, Linda Lyshall
Collaboration And Climate Action At The Local Scale, Linda Lyshall
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation encompasses a case study and a Participatory Action Research project. The case study focuses on climate change mitigation activities within King County, Washington and its 39 cities and towns and discusses progress and challenges related to transportation issues, efficiency measures, and sustainability planning. The findings indicate there is a high level of activity in waste reduction, environmental outreach and education, bicycle and pedestrian promotion, tree canopy protection, sustainability policies, and green building. Other categories, such as energy efficiency, electric vehicle infrastructure, and greenhouse gas emission inventories and goal setting are on the rise. Twelve of the cities were …
