Water Evaporation From Atmospheric Aerosols, Patrick Louden, Christopher Lawrence

With the recent discovery of the ubiquity of organic material in tropospheric aerosols, it has been postulated that the rates of water evaporation and condensation into the aerosols could be affected by thin surfactant films, which could ultimately affect cloud formation. Nathanson et al. have begun to study the effect of water evaporation from sulfuric acid solutions through the short-chain surfactant, butanol. They have found that a nearly full monolayer of butanol fails to reduce water evaporation from the acid. This unexpected result raises many questions about the mechanism of water evaporation. We used molecular modeling to help answer some …

RECENT developments in water and carbon trading and biofuel production highlight the need to document the water and carbon balances of Australia’s cropping systems including sugarcane. This paper presents the results of studies of evaporation and CO2 exchange throughout the growing seasons of two sugarcane crops, a 1st ratoon crop at Murwillumbah where burnt-cane was practised and a 5th ratoon crop at Mackay where trash blanketing was employed. At both locations, a micrometeorological eddy covariance technique was employed to measure water vapour and CO2 exchange between crop and atmosphere and manual and automatic chambers to measure CO2 emission from the …

A low‐cost system was deployed above a swine waste lagoon to obtain estimates of Bowen ratios and characterize lagoon temperatures. The system consisted of humidity and temperature sensors and anemometers deployed above the lagoon, water temperature sensors, and a meteorological station located by the lagoon. To evaluate the system, data was analyzed from the 25th through 28th June 2007. Bowen ratios showed diurnal behavior near the lagoon surface characterized by negative values during day and positive ones at night. Latent (evaporation) and sensible heat fluxes were towards the atmosphere and the lagoon, respectively for most of the day. A diurnal …
