A New Basic Copper Phosphate Mineral From Santa Rita, New Mexico, David B. Givens Dec 1951

A New Basic Copper Phosphate Mineral From Santa Rita, New Mexico, David B. Givens

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Supergene minerals are not common, nor are they rare at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Kerr (1950,307) reports the presence of cuprite, melaconite, native copper, chrysocolla, machite and azurite. There is also smithsonite present.

The physical appearance of the mineral, coupled with preliminary determinations of the indices of refraction, gave a rough correspondence with dihydrite (Larson and Berman, 1934, 135). However, enough discrepancy existed to warrant taking powder and Weissenberg X-Ray pictures. From these it was evident immediately that the specimen was a new mineral species.

The Synthesis And Pharmacologic Activity Of Some Bis-(2-Aminoethyl)-Benzenes, Ching Chen Tung Dec 1951

The Synthesis And Pharmacologic Activity Of Some Bis-(2-Aminoethyl)-Benzenes, Ching Chen Tung

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: The isolation of epinephrine from the medulla of the suprarenal gland and the discovery of its amazing therapeutic effects have stimulated intensive research on the synthesis of compounds possessing the basic skeleton of 2-aminoethyl-benzene. The investigation in the past forty years have culminated in the preparation of a large number of this type of amine which are pharmacologically classified as "sympatho-mimetic" or "pressor" agents because they generally act on the sympathetic nervous system and cause in increase of blood pressure. However, the 2-aminoethylbenzene derivatives most thoroughly studied have been those whose molecules possessed only one aminoethyl side chain per …

Enrichment Of Tin Activity Through The Szilard-Chalmers Separation, Herta W. Spano Sep 1951

Enrichment Of Tin Activity Through The Szilard-Chalmers Separation, Herta W. Spano

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

It was the purpose of this investigation to utilize the Szilard-Chalmers reaction in order to prepare tin solutions of high specific activity.

Tetraphenyl tin was chosen for the target compound. It is a white, crystalline solid of excellent thermal stability. No data have been reported in the literature on the rate of exchange between inorganic forms of tin and tetraphenyl tin but it seemed highly probable that this exchange would be very slow. Tetraphenyl tin is soluble in various organic solvents but insoluble in water, and this suggested solvent extraction as a possible means of separation of the activated tin …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Dead Time Of Geiger-Mueller Counters, Peter H. Jessner Sep 1951

An Experimental Investigation Of The Dead Time Of Geiger-Mueller Counters, Peter H. Jessner

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

As ever more sensitive and precise experiments are being performed with Geiger Counters, especially in cosmic ray research, the resolving power of these instruments assumes an ever increasing importance. With the present perfection of electronic circuitry, this resolving time has become largely a function of the dead time of the Geiger counter tube itself. It was therefore proposed to investigate methods of reducing this dead time. Only self-quenching counter tubes had to be considered in this connection since the dead time of all other types of Geiger counters is inherently longer.

Investigation Of Penetrating Cosmic-Ray Showers In Water, George William Rollosson Sep 1951

Investigation Of Penetrating Cosmic-Ray Showers In Water, George William Rollosson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In this investigation, some of the properties of the radiation which produces penetrating showers in its passage through matter are studied. Geiger techniques are used to measure the average distance over which the neutral radiation produces one penetrating shower. This distance, called collision length, is measured in water...

The collision length, on the other hand, is measured by placing the material near the apparatus and measuring the mean distance in which one shower is produced and eliminating from the observation any penetrating showers which may be produced subsequently either (a) by the original particle or (b) by the secondaries from …

The Elastic Scattering Of Deuterons By Deuterons, Richard John Runge Sep 1951

The Elastic Scattering Of Deuterons By Deuterons, Richard John Runge

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The concern of this work is the calculation of elastic scattering of deuterons by deuterons. The solution of the problem will be given in the usual center of mass system of coordinates, the conversion of results from this to the laboratory system being standard. Since the deuteron itself consists of a neutron and a proton, the problem is thus one of four bodies. The nuclear three body problem of the scattering of a neutron by a deuteron has been treated by previous authors and we will have occasion to employ methods used by these authors extending them to the four …

Solubility Product Constants Of The Metallic Sulfides, Marvin Bernard Gordon Aug 1951

Solubility Product Constants Of The Metallic Sulfides, Marvin Bernard Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the chemical literature revealed a lack of agreement in the values reported by various investigators for the solubility product constants of the metallic sulfides. The object of this thesis was to obtain a reliable set of solubility product constant values for the metallic sulfides by means of thermodynamic calculations. Of considerable importance in calculating the values of the solubility product constants of the metallic sulfides is the value of the standard free energy of formation of the sulfide ion. A critical review of the values that have been reported by various investigators for this constant , including …

The Peroxide Numbers Of Vegetable Oils, Robert J. Bruce Aug 1951

The Peroxide Numbers Of Vegetable Oils, Robert J. Bruce

Bachelors’ Theses

A survey of the literature will indicate that the peroxide numbers of fats and oils are of importance in ii many industries. The dairy, fish oil, vegetable oil, and meat processing industries all have use for peroxide number determinations. as a measure of the degree of rancidity of their products. The paint industry has used it in the study of protective coatings, and the textile industry has used it in the study of the lubrication of fibers. All of these uses were applied to the study of partial oxidation of the samples under consideration.

Since the various methods in use …

2-Pyrrolidinoethyl Esters Of Para Alkoxybenzoic And Para Alkox Alkoxycinnamic Acids, Michael James Fletcher Jul 1951

2-Pyrrolidinoethyl Esters Of Para Alkoxybenzoic And Para Alkox Alkoxycinnamic Acids, Michael James Fletcher

Master's Theses

One of the most important groups of local anesthetics is the class of alkyl and dialkylaminoalkyl esters of aromatic acids. Of these compounds, the diethylaminoethyl esters are particularly valuable.

It is obvious that pyrrolidine is merely a modified form of diethylamine. The purpose of this work is to learn the effect of substituting the N-pyrrolidyl nucleus for the diethyl amino nucleus in various esters of the local anesthetic type.

Geology Of The Pre-Cambrian Rocks Of The Northern End Of The Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Philip T. Hayes

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Most of the pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks of the northern end of the Sandia Mountains crop out on and adjacent to a prominent spur, called the Rincon, which lies to the west of the main mountain mass. These metamorphic rocks which consist of quartzite, schist, and greenstone are considered to be the result of moderate regional metamorphism of clastic sedimentary rocks and possibly some basic flows and stills. These rocks are here tentatively named the Juan Tabo sequence and are Archeozoic or early Proterozoic age. The Sandia granite, which lies to the east and south of the Juan Tabo sequence, was …

Phase Behavior Of Sodium Stearate In Anhydrous Cyclohexane, Walter Edward Reid Jr. Jun 1951

Phase Behavior Of Sodium Stearate In Anhydrous Cyclohexane, Walter Edward Reid Jr.

Master's Theses

Soap solutions, aqueous and non-aqueous, are characteristic in that they firm colloidal systems at certain concentrations, the properties of which are influenced by temperature and pressure. Application of the Gibbs phase rule to such systems makes possible the location of the various phases of a particular system and hence enables phase diagrams to be constructed. For systems of soap-hydrocarbons such as are found in fuels, beauty preparations, greases, medical preparations, etc., a phase diagram would show very readily the most satisfactory composition for the conditions desired.

An Experimental Investigation Of A Light Weight High Voltage Power Supply, James F. Tribby

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This investigation is directed toward the development and design of an electronic high-voltage power supply. The method consists of obtaining a direct current of low intensity by periodically charging by means of a primary battery a group of capacitors in parallel combination and discharging them electronically in series. A stimulus to this investigation is provided by the need for a light-weight electronic current source operating at moderately high voltages which is stable and capable of maintaining a constant current of low intensity over a wide range of variation of the potential from a primary battery. In addition, a power supply …

Microfauna Of The Colorado Shale In The Sunburst Dome Area, Montana, Merle W. Emmert

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It has been hoped that a micropaleontological study of the shales of the Upper Cretaceous Colorado Group in northern Montana would reveal certain faunal zones which would serve as markers in an otherwise drab, undifferentiated, 1800 feet of grey, fissile shale. This paper presents the results of a study of the microfauna in certain samples from this shale in the Sunburst Dome area north of Shelby, Montana.

The Elkhorn Mine Of Jefferson County, Montana, David D. Walker Jun 1951

The Elkhorn Mine Of Jefferson County, Montana, David D. Walker

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In 1901, after yielding metals valued in excess of five million dollars, it was considered worked out. Since that time the mine has passed through the hands of several owners, none of whom have failed to realize a profit from it. Although at no time since its zenith did it ever regain its once great production, it did provide a livelihood for those who worked it. Now with the American Smelting and Refining Company interested in it, perhaps it will once again become an important producer.

The Synthesis Of 3-Ethyl-9-Acetylphenanthrene, Elizabeth R. Bender Jun 1951

The Synthesis Of 3-Ethyl-9-Acetylphenanthrene, Elizabeth R. Bender

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1929 , there was recognized a relatively small number of naturally occurring phenanthrene compounds as compared with those known today. These compounds include several groups of substances which are as strikingly similar in structure as they are different in their actions on the animal organism. For instance, the structure of the sterols and bile acids contain the perhydrocyclopentenophenanthrene ring system. Upon later research, it was found that the sex hormones and cardiac glycosides (heart poisons secreted by toads) have a structure very similar to this system. They are all derivatives of cyclopentenophenanthrene.

The Variation Problems Of Weierstrass-Bliss And Radon, Douglas M. Gragg May 1951

The Variation Problems Of Weierstrass-Bliss And Radon, Douglas M. Gragg

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Problems of the Calculus of Variations are generalizations of the familiar minimum problems treated in the differential calculus. The relationships between the ordinary minimum problems of the calculus and the generalizations dealt with in the Calculus of Variations is possibly best seen by examining the general Hilbert-Moore minimum problem, and the special examples of such problems formulated in the table below.

The Chemical Characteristics Of 8.0-Day I^131 Produced By The Beta Decay Of 25-Minute Te^131 In Organic Liquids, Francis J. Keneshea Jr. May 1951

The Chemical Characteristics Of 8.0-Day I^131 Produced By The Beta Decay Of 25-Minute Te^131 In Organic Liquids, Francis J. Keneshea Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In 1934 Szilard and Chalmers found that a large fraction of the radioactive iodine produced in the thermal neutron irradiation of ethyl iodide could be extracted from the irradiated material. The procedure followed was to add a trace of carrier iodine to the irradiated liquid, extract the iodine with an aqueous solution of a reducing agent and precipitate the iodide as silver iodide. The silver iodide precipitate obtained in this manner contained a large fraction of the iodine activity (25-minute I128), at a high specific activity. Since ethyl iodide is not soluble in water and hence is not …
