Public Expenditure, Environmental Pollution And Endogenous Economic Growth., Trishita Ray Barman Dr. Dec 2012

Public Expenditure, Environmental Pollution And Endogenous Economic Growth., Trishita Ray Barman Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Sources of Economic Growth and the Definition of Steady-State EquilibriumEconomic growth is defined as a continuous increase in national income taking place over a time horizon. According to the neoclassical theory of economic growth there are three sources of economic growth: (i) capital accumulation, (ii) growth of labour force and (iii) technological progress. The steady-state growth equilibrium is defined as a state where all major macro-economic variables grow at the same rate so that the ratios of these variables remain unchanged over time. For example, in the one sector aggregative model like that of Solow (1956), capital and labour grow at …

Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria Dec 2012

Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The generalized inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation serves as a model for n-dimensional incompressible Euler flow, gas dynamics, high-frequency waves in shallow waters, and orientation of waves in a massive director field of a nematic liquid crystal. Furthermore, the equation also serves as a tool for studying the role that the natural fluid processes of convection and stretching play in the formation of spontaneous singularities, or of their absence.

In this work, we study blow-up, and blow-up properties, in solutions to the generalized, inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation endowed with periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. More particularly, regularity of solutions in an Lp setting will …

Cost Effective Domination In Graphs, Tabitha Lynn Mccoy Dec 2012

Cost Effective Domination In Graphs, Tabitha Lynn Mccoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A set S of vertices in a graph G = (V,E) is a dominating set if every vertex in V \ S is adjacent to at least one vertex in S. A vertex v in a dominating set S is said to be it cost effective if it is adjacent to at least as many vertices in V \ S as it is in S. A dominating set S is cost effective if every vertex in S is cost effective. The minimum cardinality of a cost effective dominating set of G is the cost …

Parametrizing Finite Frames And Optimal Frame Completions, Miriam J. Poteet Dec 2012

Parametrizing Finite Frames And Optimal Frame Completions, Miriam J. Poteet

Theses and Dissertations

Frames are used in many signal processing applications. We consider the problem of constructing every frame whose frame operator has a given spectrum and whose vectors have prescribed lengths. For a given spectrum and set of lengths, we know when such a frame exists by the Schur-Horn Theorem; it exists if and only if its spectrum majorizes its squared lengths. We provide a more constructive proof of Horn's original result. This proof is based on a new method for constructing any and all frames whose frame operator has a prescribed spectrum and whose vectors have prescribed lengths. Constructing all such …

Discrete Sparse Fourier Hermite Approximations In High Dimensions, Ashley Prater Dec 2012

Discrete Sparse Fourier Hermite Approximations In High Dimensions, Ashley Prater

Mathematics - Dissertations

In this dissertation, the discrete sparse Fourier Hermite approximation of a function in a specified Hilbert space of arbitrary dimension is defined, and theoretical error bounds of the numerically computed approximation are proven. Computing the Fourier Hermite approximation in high dimensions suffers from the well-known curse of dimensionality. In short, as the ambient dimension increases, the complexity of the problem grows until it is impossible to numerically compute a solution. To circumvent this difficulty, a sparse, hyperbolic cross shaped set, that takes advantage of the natural decaying nature of the Fourier Hermite coefficients, is used to serve as an index …

Validation Of Weak Form Thermal Analysis Algorithms Supporting Thermal Signature Generation, Elton Lewis Freeman Dec 2012

Validation Of Weak Form Thermal Analysis Algorithms Supporting Thermal Signature Generation, Elton Lewis Freeman

Masters Theses

Extremization of a weak form for the continuum energy conservation principle differential equation naturally implements fluid convection and radiation as flux Robin boundary conditions associated with unsteady heat transfer. Combining a spatial semi-discretization via finite element trial space basis functions with time-accurate integration generates a totally node-based algebraic statement for computing. Closure for gray body radiation is a newly derived node-based radiosity formulation generating piecewise discontinuous solutions, while that for natural-forced-mixed convection heat transfer is extracted from the literature. Algorithm performance, mathematically predicted by asymptotic convergence theory, is subsequently validated with data obtained in 24 hour diurnal field experiments for …

On Decision Making: Bayesian And Stochastic Optimization Approaches, Yang Shen Dec 2012

On Decision Making: Bayesian And Stochastic Optimization Approaches, Yang Shen

Masters Theses

Decision analysis provides a framework for searching an optimal solution under uncertainties and potential risks. This thesis focuses on two problems arising in transportation engineering and computer sciences, respectively.

First, it is considered a centralized controller which imposes actions on a number of interacting subsystems. Employing an appropriate Markov Decision Process framework, we establish that the Pareto optimal solution of each subsystem will be optimal for the entire system. Synthetic data have been taken into account for verifying this claim.

Next, we focus on a supercomputing problem utilizing a hierarchical Bayesian model. We estimate an optimal solution in order to …

The Class Equation Of Gl2(Fq), Lindsey Mathewson Dec 2012

The Class Equation Of Gl2(Fq), Lindsey Mathewson

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we discuss the conjugacy classes of the general linear group of 2 x 2 matrices over a prime field. We find the number of conjugacy classes and the class equation for GL_2 (F_q) for general prime q. We then look at some applications of the class equation, which includes finding the number of orbits when GL_2 (F_q) acts on (GL_2 (F_q))^s by conjugation. Included in this thesis is the Maple Code for generating the class equation for any prime.

Pricing Of American Lookback Options Using Linear Programming, Michael Alexander Wagner Dec 2012

Pricing Of American Lookback Options Using Linear Programming, Michael Alexander Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

We will introduce the American lookback option in the Black-Scholes model. Afterwards

we will examine the process it inherits and derive and formulate the linear

program needed to price it.

As an approximation, we will apply a time-discretization and a truncation of the

innite space. The requirements for a solution are weakened and the optimization

problem is reduced to base functions, being linear functions.

In the end we study the numerical results following from the above computations.

On The Representation Of Inverse Semigroups By Difunctional Relations, Nathan Bloomfield Dec 2012

On The Representation Of Inverse Semigroups By Difunctional Relations, Nathan Bloomfield

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A semigroup S is called inverse if for each s in S, there exists a unique t in S such that sts = s and tst = t. A relation σ contained in X x Y is called full if for all x in X and y in Y there exist x' in X and y' in Y such that (x, y') and (x', y) are in σ, and is called difunctional if σ satisfies the equation σ σ-1 σ = σ. Inverse semigroups were introduced by Wagner and Preston in 1952 and 1954, respectively, and difunctional relations were …

Regular Homotopy Of Closed Curves On Surfaces, Katherine Kylee Zebedeo Dec 2012

Regular Homotopy Of Closed Curves On Surfaces, Katherine Kylee Zebedeo

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The use of rotation numbers in the classification of regular closed curves in the plane up to regular homotopy sparked the investigation of winding numbers to classify regular closed curves on other surfaces. Chillingworth [1] defined winding numbers for regular closed curves on particular surfaces and used them to classify orientation preserving regular closed curves that are based at a fixed point and direction. We define geometrically a group structure of the set of equivalence classes of regular closed curves based at a fixed point and direction. We prove this group structure coincides with the one introduced by Smale [9] …

Boolean And Profinite Loops, Benjamin Andrew Phillips Dec 2012

Boolean And Profinite Loops, Benjamin Andrew Phillips

Dissertations

A Quasigroup G consists of a set G together with a binary operation ∗ : G × G → G such that, for any elements a, bG there are unique solutions to the equations a ∗ x = b and y ∗ a = b within G. A loop is a quasigroup which also contains a 2-sided identity element. More heuristically, loops are essentially non-associative groups. However, without an associative binary operation, some of the familiar properties found in groups, such as 2-sided inverse, need not be present in loops.

The study of quasigroups and loops emerges …

On The Spherical Symmetry Of Perfect-Fluid Stellar Models In General Relativity, Joshua M Brewer Dec 2012

On The Spherical Symmetry Of Perfect-Fluid Stellar Models In General Relativity, Joshua M Brewer

Masters Theses

It is well known in Newtonian theory that static self-gravitating perfect fluids in a vacuum are necessarily spherically symmetric. The necessity of spherical symmetry of perfect-fluid static spacetimes with constant density in general relativity is shown.

Investigation Of Heat Transfer And Flow Using Ribs Within Gas Turbine Blade Cooling Passage: Experimental And Hybrid Les/Rans Modeling, Sourabh Kumar Dec 2012

Investigation Of Heat Transfer And Flow Using Ribs Within Gas Turbine Blade Cooling Passage: Experimental And Hybrid Les/Rans Modeling, Sourabh Kumar

Theses and Dissertations

Gas turbines are extensively used for aircraft propulsion, land based power generation and various industrial applications. Developments in innovative gas turbine cooling technology enhance the efficiency and power output, with an increase in turbine rotor inlet temperatures. These advancements of turbine cooling have allowed engine design to exceed normal material temperature limits. For internal cooling design, techniques for heat extraction from the surfaces exposed to hot stream are based on the increase of heat transfer areas and on promotion of turbulence of the cooling flow. In this study, it is obtained by casting repeated continuous V and broken V shaped …

Enhancing Effective Depth-Of-Field By Multi-Focus Image Fusion Using Morphological Techniques., Ishita De Ghosh Dr. Nov 2012

Enhancing Effective Depth-Of-Field By Multi-Focus Image Fusion Using Morphological Techniques., Ishita De Ghosh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A scene to be photographed, usually includes objects at varying distances from the camera. Depth-of-field of a digital camera is the range of distance, all objects within which appear to be sharp in the image. Due to the low depth-of-field of the camera, images acquired by them often suffer from degradation called out-of-foc us blur. One way to enhance the effective depth-of-field is to acquire se veral images of a scene with focus on different parts of it and then combine these images into a single image in such a way that all regions of the scene are in focus. …

Numerical Solutions Of Elliptic Inverse Problems Via The Equation Error Method, Mohammad F. Al-Jamal Nov 2012

Numerical Solutions Of Elliptic Inverse Problems Via The Equation Error Method, Mohammad F. Al-Jamal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

To estimate a parameter in an elliptic boundary value problem, the method of equation error chooses the value that minimizes the error in the PDE and boundary condition (the solution of the BVP having been replaced by a measurement). The estimated parameter converges to the exact value as the measured data converge to the exact value, provided Tikhonov regularization is used to control the instability inherent in the problem. The error in the estimated solution can be bounded in an appropriate quotient norm; estimates can be derived for both the underlying (infinite-dimensional) problem and a finite-element discretization that can be …

Ultrasonic Analysis Of Breast Tissue For Pathology Classification, Kristina Marie Sorensen Oct 2012

Ultrasonic Analysis Of Breast Tissue For Pathology Classification, Kristina Marie Sorensen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Real time measurements may assist surgeons in obtaining negative or cancer free margins during lumpectomy to eliminate invasive re-excision. Previous findings show that high-frequency ultrasound can differentiate between a range of breast pathologies in surgical specimens. Two parameters, peak density and second-order spectral slope, are sensitive to histopathology. Our objective was to determine the mechanism linking high-frequency ultrasound to histology. The hypothesis is that ultrasound sensitivity is a function of the microscopic heterogeneity (and thus histology) of the tissue. Ultrasonic results from breast specimens were used to construct a multivariate analysis of the parameters that permitted differentiation of normal, adipose, …

A Non-Parametric Approach To Change-Point Detection In Cross-Asset Correlations, L. Kaili Diamond Oct 2012

A Non-Parametric Approach To Change-Point Detection In Cross-Asset Correlations, L. Kaili Diamond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we explore the problem of detecting change-points in cross-asset correlations using a non-parametric approach. We began by comparing and contrasting several common methods for change-point detection as well as methods for measuring correlation. We finally settle on a statistic introduced in early 2012 by Herold Dehling et.al. and test this statistic against real world financial data. We provide the estimated change-point for this data as well as the asymptotic p-value associated with this statistic. Once this process was complete we went on to use simulated data to measure the accuracy, power, and type 1 error associated with …

An Analysis Of Differences In Approaches To Systems Of Linear Equations Problems Given Multiple Choice Answers, Amber Lagasse Oct 2012

An Analysis Of Differences In Approaches To Systems Of Linear Equations Problems Given Multiple Choice Answers, Amber Lagasse

Honors Theses and Capstones

This descriptive study focuses on the approaches college students (ages 20 -24) use when solving systems of linear equations problems that have multiple choice answers. Participants were from a midsize public university in the northeast. Four approaches were considered – three forwards approaches: 1) substitution, 2) elimination, and 3) graphing, and one backwards approach: plugging in the x and y values from each multiple choice option. Participants solved systems of linear equations problems and answered questions based on their methods in a structured clinical interview. Each participant also filled out a questionnaire. It was shown from the results of this …

Integer Solutions To Optimization Problems And Modular Sequences Of Nexus Numbers, Jeremy T. Davis Oct 2012

Integer Solutions To Optimization Problems And Modular Sequences Of Nexus Numbers, Jeremy T. Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we examine the use of integers through two ideas. As mathematics teachers, we prefer students not use calculators on assessments. In order to require this, students compute the problems by hand. We take a look at the classic Calculus I optimization box problem while restricting values to integers. In addition, sticking with the integer theme, we take a new look at the nexus numbers. Nexus numbers are extensions of the hex and rhombic dodecahedral numbers. We put these numbers into a sequence, and through a few computations of modular arithmetic, we analyze the sequences and their patterns …

Compositions, Bijections, And Enumerations, Charles R. Dedrickson Iii Oct 2012

Compositions, Bijections, And Enumerations, Charles R. Dedrickson Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we give an introduction to colored-compositions of an integer. This is a generalization of traditional integer compositions, and we show a few results for n-color compositions which are analogous to regular compositions with both combinatorial and analytic proofs. We also show several bijections between various types of compositions to certain types of numeric strings, and provide a generalization of a classic bijection between compositions and binary strings.

New Bilinear Estimates For Quadratic-Derivative Nonlinear Wave Equations In 2+1 Dimensions, Allison J. Tanguay Sep 2012

New Bilinear Estimates For Quadratic-Derivative Nonlinear Wave Equations In 2+1 Dimensions, Allison J. Tanguay

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the Cauchy problem for the quadratic derivative nonlinear wave equation in two spatial dimensions. Using standard techniques, we reduce local well-posedness in Fourier Lebesgue spaces to bilinear estimates in associated wave Fourier Lebesgue spaces, for which we prove new product estimates. These estimates then allow us to establish local well-posedness in a parameter range that gives improvement over previously known results on the Sobolev scale.
