Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Developing low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction is of critical significance to the practical application of some emerging energy storage and conversion devices (e.g., metal-air batteries, water electrolyzers, and fuel cells). Lithium cobalt oxide is a promising nonprecious metal-based electrocatalyst for oxygen electrocatalysis; its activity, however, is still far from the requirements of practical applications. Here, a new LiCoO 2 -based electrocatalyst with nanosheet morphology is developed by a combination of Mg doping and shear force-assisted exfoliation strategies toward enhanced oxygen reduction and evolution reaction kinetics. It is demonstrated that the coupling effect …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Ni-rich layered transition metal oxides show great energy density but suffer poor thermal stability and inferior cycling performance, which limit their practical application. In this work, a minor content of Co and B were co-doped into the crystal of a Ni-rich cathode (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) using cobalt acetate and boric acid as dopants. The results analyzed by XRD, TEM, XPS and SEM reveal that the modified sample shows a reduced energy barrier for Li+ insertion/extraction and alleviated Li+/Ni2+ cation mixing. With the doping of B and Co, corresponding enhanced cycle stability was achieved with a high capacity retention of 86.1% at 1.0C …

A Custom Battery For Operando Neutron Powder Diffraction Studies Of Electrode Structure, Wei Kong Pang, Vanessa Peterson

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Structure-property relations are central to understanding functional materials, and for battery research the use of neutron powder diffraction to reveal the atomistic and molecular-scale origin of battery performance characteristics is often essential. Although operando experiments of this kind are increasingly common as neutron sources and instrumentation advance, these experiments are hindered by the often large barrier presented by the preparation of whole batteries that yield a neutron diffraction signal from the electrode of interest that is sufficient to extract detailed structural information. This article presents a custom battery that is specifically designed for operando neutron powder diffraction. The battery is …

Research on development of efficient passivation materials for high performance and stable quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) is highly important. While ZnS is one of the most widely used passivation material in QDSCs, an alternative material based on ZnSe which was deposited on CdS/CdSe/TiO2 photoanode to form a semi-core/shell structure has been found to be more efficient in terms of reducing electron recombination in QDSCs in this work. It has been found that the solar cell efficiency was improved from 1.86% for ZnSe0 (without coating) to 3.99% using 2 layers of ZnSe coating (ZnSe2) deposited by successive ionic …

The Effect Of Surface Passivation On The Structure Of Sulphur-Rich Pbs Colloidal Quantum Dots For Photovoltaic Application, Victor Malgras, Andrew Nattestad, Yusuke Yamauchi, S X. Dou, Jung Ho Kim

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The use of PbS colloidal quantum dots in photovoltaic devices is very promising because of their simple and low cost production processes and their unique properties, such as bandgap tunability and potential multiple exciton generation. Here we report the synthesis of PbS nanocrystals used for application in solar cells. The sulphur-rich nature of their surface appears to be caused by the exposure to ambient conditions. The use of methanol as medium during the ligand exchange process has a crucial role in the removal of native oleate ligands. Without proper ligand exchange, the unpassivated surface is subject to ambient hydroxylation leading …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Three perovskite nitride oxides CeTiNO2, PrTiNO2, and NdTiNO2 have been synthesized and their electronic structures and photocatalytic activities characterized and compared to LaTiNO2. All three compounds have band gaps that fall in the range 2.0 − 2.1 eV, very similar to LaTiNO2, which enables them to absorb a significant fraction of the visible spectrum. Photocatalytic oxygen evolution studies under visible light irradiation in the presence of a sacrificial electron acceptor (Ag+) show that the activity of NdTiNO2 (16 μmol/g/hr) is comparable to that of LaTiNO2 (17 μmol/g/hr), …

Silicon batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high theoretical capacity, although a rapid capacity fade is normally observed, attributed mainly to volume expansion during lithiation. Here, we report for the first time successful synthesis of Si/void/SiO2/void/C nanostructures. The synthesis strategy only involves selective etching of SiO2 in Si/SiO2/C structures with hydrofluoric acid solution. Compared with reported results, such novel structures include a hard SiO2-coated layer, a conductive carbon-coated layer, and two internal void spaces. In the structures, the carbon can enhance conductivity, the SiO2 layer has mechanically …

Improvement In Structure And Superconductivity Of Bulk Fese0.5te0.5 Superconductors By Optimizing Sintering Temperature, Ning Chen, Yongchang Liu, Zongqing Ma, Liming Yu, Huijun Li

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Sintering temperature plays a vital role in the evolution of phase structure and microstructure in polycrystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulks fabricated by the two-step sintering method, and thus significantly influences their superconducting properties. Elevated sintering temperature (600-700°C) at second step facilitates the substitution of Te into the superconducting phase, which leads to the increased lattice distortion and thus contributes to the enhancement of superconductivity (the value of Tc reaches 15.6K). At the same time, the accelerated growth of the superconducting grains and the improved homogeneity motivated by elevated sintering temperature serve as the main reason for the sharp superconducting transition.

Electrochemical capacitors (EC) bear faster charge-discharge; however, their real applications are still on a long away due to lower capacitance and energy densities which mainly arise from simple surface charge accumulation or/and reaction. Here, a novel synthesis strategy was designed to obtain the purposeful hybrids of nickel cobalt double hydroxide (NiCoDH) with genetic morphology to improve their electrochemical performance as electrode of EC. Nanostructures of metal hydroxides were grown on t he nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) sheets by utilizing defects as nucleation sites and their composition was optimized both by tuning the ratio of Ni:Co as well as the counter halogen …

The latest discovery of possible high-temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate has generated much attention. Initial work found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer film shows an insulating behaviour. Such a marked layer-dependent difference is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report a comparative angleresolved photoemission study between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films annealed in vacuum. We find that, different from the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film is hard to get doped and remains in the semiconducting/ insulating state under …

We explored the orbital structure of FeTiO3 with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectra complemented with electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure, near the bottom of conduction band, is composed of O 2p and Ti 3d orbitals. Ti 3d/4p hybridization dominantly lies on the ab plane. The highly delocalized Ti 4p orbital might hybridize with O 2p orbital and even extend to the next-neighbor Fe atom whereby establishing a linear orbital combination of Ti-O-Fe. A clear picture of the orbital construction in FeTiO3 will help to elucidate the paths of pressure-induced charge transfer and other physical or magnetic characteristics.

Why Do Girls Sustain More Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries Than Boys? A Review Of The Changes In Oestrogen And Musculoskeletal Structure And Function During Puberty, Catherine Y. Wild, Julie R. Steele, Bridget J. Munro

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Sport is the leading cause of injury among adolescents and girls incur more non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures than boys, with this gender disparity in injury incidence apparent from the onset of puberty. Although the mechanisms for this gender disparity in ACL injuries are relatively unknown, hormonal, anatomical and biomechanical factors have been implicated. Puberty is associated with rapid skeletal growth and hormonal influx, both of which are thought to contribute to alterations in ACL metabolic and mechanical properties, as well as changes in lower limb strength and flexibility, ultimately influencing landing technique. Therefore, the aim of this review …

On The Combination Of Local Texture And Global Structure For Food Classification, Zhimin Zong, Duc Thanh Nguyen, Philip O. Ogunbona, Wanqing Li

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper proposes a food image classification method using local textural patterns and their global structure to describe the food image. In this paper, a visual codebook of local textural patterns is created by employing Scale Invariant Feature Transformation (SIFT) interest point detector with the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) feature. In addition to describing the food image using local texture, the global structure of the food object is represented as the spatial distribution of the local textural structures and encoded using shape context. We evaluated the proposed method on the Pittsburgh Fast-Food Image (PFI) dataset. Experimental results showed that the …

Rotor Position And Speed Estimation Of A Variable Structure Direct-Torque-Controlled Ipm Synchronous Motor Drive At Very Low Speeds Including Standstill, Saad M. Sayeef, Gilbert Foo, Muhammad F. Rahman

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The performance of a speed sensorless variable structure direct-torque-controlled interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drive at very low speeds including standstill is investigated in this paper. The rotor position and speed are estimated using a high-frequency (HF) signal injection algorithm at low speeds and a sliding observer at medium to high speeds. The changeover between these two algorithms is performed using a weighting function which smoothly hands over the estimated rotor position information for stator flux and torque estimation purposes. Experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the proposed HF signal injection algorithm, and results show that the sensorless …

Magnetic Properties Of Bi2femno6: A Multiferroic Material With Double-Perovskite Structure, Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, S X. Dou, Xiaolin Wang, Hua Zhao, Hideo Kimura

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Single phase Bi2FeMnO6 was synthesized on Si substrates by an electrospray method. Three peaks were observed in the temperature dependence of magnetization curve, which is attributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of Fe3+ and Mn3+. The observed magnetic peaks at 150 K, 260 K, and 440 K correspond to orderings of the ferrimagnetic Fe–O–Mn, and antiferromagnetic Mn–O–Mn and Fe–O–Fe, respectively. Heat capacity measurements were carried out to confirm these magnetic transitions. The Debye temperature of Bi2FeMnO6 is 339 K, calculated from Debye–Einstein fitting.

Evidence For Specific Subunit Distribution And Interactions In The Quaternary Structure Of Α-Crystallin, Amie M. Morris, J Andrew Aquilina

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The quaternary structure of alpha-crystallin is dynamic, a property which has thwarted crystallographic efforts towards structural characterization. In this study, we have used collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry to examine the architecture of the polydisperse assemblies of alpha-crystallin. For total alpha-crystallin isolated directly from fetal calf lens using size-based chromatography, the alpha B-crystallin subunit was found to be preferentially dissociated from the oligomers, despite being significantly less abundant overall than the alpha A-crystallin subunits. Furthermore, upon mixing molar equivalents of purified alpha A- and alpha B-crystallin, the levels of their dissociation were found to decrease and increase, respectively, with time. Interestingly …

Genetic Structure And Dispersal Patterns Of The Invasive Psocid Liposcelis Decolor (Pearman) In Australian Grain Storage Systems, Katarina Maryann Mikac, N N. Fitzsimmons

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Microsatellite markers were used to investigate the genetic structure among invasive L. decolor populations from Australia and a single international population from Kansas, USA to determine patterns of dispersal. Six variable microsatellites displayed an average of 2.5-4.2 alleles per locus per population. Observed (H-O) heterozygosity ranged from 0.12-0.65 per locus within populations; but, in 13 of 36 tests, H-O was less than expected. Despite low levels of allelic diversity, genetic structure estimated as theta was significant for all pairwise comparisons between populations (theta = 0.05-0.23). Due to suspected null alleles at four loci, ENA (excluding null alleles) corrected F-ST estimates …

Structure, Magnetic, And Thermal Properties Of Nd1-Xlaxcro3 (0 ≤ X ≤ 1.0), Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Perovskite-type Nd1−xLaxCrO3(0 ≤ x ≤1.0) polycrystalline samples were synthesized using solid state reaction. Structural studies indicate that the lattice parameters, metal–oxygen bond lengths, and angles of Nd1−xLaxCrO3 strongly depend on the La content. Two magnetic transition temperatures, Cr3+ antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) and the spin reorientation phase transition temperature (TSRPT), have been observed in the M-T curves. The increase in TN and decrease in TSRPT with increasing x value can be explained by the change in the magnetic interactions due to La …

Diffraction Of Ocean Waves Around A Hollow Cylindrical Shell Structure, Song-Ping Zhu, Lewis Mitchell

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in problems of diffraction and radiation of ocean waves around structures, in relation to “green” power generation by Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. In this paper we present a first-order analytical solution for the diffraction of ocean waves around a hollow cylindrical shell structure suspended in an ocean of finite depth. By revisiting work done by Garrett (1970) on the problem of a bottomless harbor, but adopting a different and more direct method, we obtain the solution for the diffracted wave potential. Using the new approach, we analyze the dependence of the …
