Ambient Facile Synthesis Of Gram-Scale Copper Selenide Nanostructures From Commercial Copper And Selenium Powder, Xinqi Chen, Zhen Li, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Grams of copper selenides (Cu2-xSe) were prepared from commercial copper and selenium powders in the presence of thiol ligands by a one-pot reaction at room temperature. The resultant copper selenides are a mixture of nanoparticles and their assembled nanosheets, and the thickness of nanosheets assembled is strongly dependent on the ratio of thiol ligand to selenium powder. The resultant Cu2-xSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) nanostructures were treated with hydrazine solution to remove the surface ligands and then explored as a potential thermoelectric candidate in comparison with commercial copper selenide powders. The research provides a novel …

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), widely referred to as drones, are becoming increasingly relevant in civilian as well as military applications. UAS have been used by emergency services to help respond to and map environmental crises, to find missing people, to fight fires, and respond to traffic accidents. Their use in policing and border patrol functions is being trialled in many Western countries. Like other recent technologies (mobile phones etc), as they become cheaper and easier to use, they are likely to become much more prevalent in civilian life across a range of applications.

This conference will examine the current state …

Influence Of Capping On The Atomistic Arrangement In Palladium Nanoparticles At Room Temperature, Gaston Corthey, Jimena A. Olmos-Asar, Gilberto Casillas, Marcelo M. Mariscal, Sergio Mejia-Rosales, Julio C. Azcarate, Eduardo Larios, Miguel Jose-Yacaman, Roberto Salvarezza, M Fonticelli

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The role that protecting molecules have on the way that palladium atoms arrange themselves in nanoparticles prepared at room temperature was studied by the analysis of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy images and atomistic Langevin dynamics simulations. It was found that the arrangement of Pd atoms is less ordered in thiolate-protected nanoparticles than in amine-protected ones. The experimental and theoretical data showed that the disorder in ∼3 nm thiolate-protected particles is promoted by the strong S-Pd bond in the sulfide layer that surrounds the nanoparticles.

Microscopic Model For Exchange Bias From Grain-Boundary Disorder In A Ferromagnet/Antiferromagnet Thin Film With A Nanocrystalline Microstructure, David L. Cortie, A G. Biternas, R W. Chantrell, Xiaolin Wang, Frank Klose

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Monte Carlo spin simulations were coupled to a Voronoi microstructure-generator to predict the magnitude and behavior of exchange bias in a ferromagnet/antiferromagnet (AF) thin film bilayer with a nanocrystalline microstructure. Our model accounts for the effects of irregular grain-shapes, finite-sized particles, and the possible presence of local random-fields originating from the antiferromagnet's grain-boundary regions. As the grain-boundary represents a crystal-structure distortion, we model the local effect on the exchange constants in the Gaussian approximation which can cause regions resembling a spin glass confined to an unusual 2D topology. Although an ensemble of completely disconnected AF grains isolated by non-magnetic barriers …

Tio2 Coated Three-Dimensional Hierarchically Ordered Porous Sulfur Electrode For The Lithium/Sulfur Rechargeable Batteries, Hongqiang Wang, Sha Li, Dan Li, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon-sulfur composite slice coated with a thin TiO2 layer has been synthesized by a low-cost process and investigated as a cathode for the lithium-sulfur batteries. The TiO2 coated carbon sulfur composite thin slice works as a binder-free cathode without any current collectors for lithium-sulfur batteries. The hierarchical architecture provides a 3D conductive network for electron transfer, open channels for ion diffusion and strong confinement of soluble polysulfides. Meanwhile, TiO2 (titanium dioxide) coating layer could further effectively prevent the dissolution of polysulfides and also improve the strength of the entire electrode, thereby enhancing the electrochemical …

Mesoporous Hexagonal Co3o4 For High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries, Dawei Su, Xiuqiang Xie, Paul Munroe, S X. Dou, Guoxiu Wang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates were successfully prepared by the conversion of hexagonal beta-Co(OH)(2) nanoplates. TEM, HRTEM and N-2 sorption analysis confirmed the facet crystal structure and inner mesoporous architecture. When applied as anode materials for lithium storage in lithium ion batteries, mesoporous Co3O4 nanocrystals delivered a high specific capacity. At 10 degrees C current rate, as-prepared mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates delivered a specific capacity of 1203 mAh/g at first cycle and after 200 cycles it can still maintain a satisfied value (330 mAh/g). Fromex-situ TEM, SAED and FESEM observation, it was found that mesoporous Co3O4 nanoplates were reduced to Li2O and Co …

Silicene monolayers grown on Ag(111) surfaces demonstrate a band gap that is tunable by oxygen adatoms from semimetallic to semiconducting type. With the use of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the adsorption configurations and amounts of oxygen adatoms on the silicene surface are critical for band gap engineering, which is dominated by different buckled structures in √13 x √13, 4 x 4, and 2√3 x 2√3 silicene layers. The Si-O-Si bonds are the most energy-favored species formed on √13 x √13, 4 x 4, and 2√3 x 2√3 structures under oxidation, which is verified by in situ Raman …

Force Control Of A Tri-Layer Conducting Polymer Actuator Using Optimized Fuzzy Logic Control, Mehmet Itik, Mohammadreza Sabetghadam, Gursel Alici

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Conducting polymers actuators (CPAs) are potential candidates for replacing conventional actuators in various fields, such as robotics and biomedical engineering, due to their advantageous properties, which includes their low cost, light weight, low actuation voltage and biocompatibility. As these actuators are very suitable for use in micro-nano manipulation and in injection devices in which the magnitude of the force applied to the target is of crucial importance, the force generated by CPAs needs to be accurately controlled. In this paper, a fuzzy logic (FL) controller with a Mamdani inference system is designed to control the blocking force of a trilayer …

Uncoupled Surface Spin Induced Exchange Bias In Alpha-Mno2 Nanowires, W Li, R Zeng, Ziqi Sun, Dongliang Tian, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We have studied the microstructure, surface states, valence fluctuations, magnetic properties, and exchange bias effect in MnO2 nanowires. High purity alpha-MnO2 rectangular nanowires were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. The microstructure analysis indicates that the nanowires grow in the [0 0 1] direction with the (2 1 0) plane as the surface. Mn3+ and Mn2+ ions are not found in the system by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effective magnetic moment of the manganese ions fits in with the theoretical and experimental values of Mn4+ very well. The uncoupled spins in 3d(3) orbitals of the Mn4+ ions …

Epitaxial silicene, which is one single layer of silicon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, demonstrates a strong interaction with the substrate that dramatically affects its electronic structure. The role of electronic coupling in the chemical reactivity between the silicene and the substrate is still unclear so far, which is of great importance for functionalization of silicene layers. Here, we report the reconstructions and hybridized electronic structures of epitaxial 4 3 4 silicene on Ag(111), which are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The hybridization between Si and Ag results in a metallic surface state, which can …

To search a proper dopant to further improve superconductivity in 11 type Fe-based superconductors makes sense to both their superconductivity mechanism and possible technological applications. In present work, Mg doped FeSe polycrystalline bulks were obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method. Even though there are many MgSe and iron impurities existing in the Mg heavy doped FeSe bulks, they exhibit obviously increased Tc compared to undoped FeSe sample. It was found that Mg addition has little effect on the crystal lattice parameters of superconducting beta-FeSe, whereas leads to the formation of nano-layered grain structure consisted of MgSe and beta-FeSe …

Modeling Transport Properties Of Inhomogeneous Superconductor-Metal Composites, A Borroto, L Del Rio, M Arronte, Tom Johansen, E Altshuler

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We propose a model for a superconductor-metal composite that allows to derive intrinsic transport properties of the superconducting phase based on 2D images of its cross section, and a minimal set of parameters. The method is tested experimentally by using, as model composite, a "transversal bridge" made on a Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x (BSCCO)-Ag multi-filamentary tape. It is shown that the approach allows to predict the measured I−⟨E⟩ curves of the filaments. In addition, one can determine the critical current anisotropy between the longitudinal and transverse directions of the Ag-BSCCO tape, and also of …

Charged-Controlled Separation Of Nitrogen From Natural Gas Using Boron Nitride Fullerene, Qiao Sun, Caixia Sun, Aijun Du, Zhen Li

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Natural gas (the main component is methane) has been widely used as a fuel and raw material in industry. Removal of nitrogen (N2) from methane (CH4) can reduce the cost of natural gas transport and improve its efficiency. However, their extremely similar size increases the difficulty of separating N2 from CH4. In this study, we have performed a comprehensive investigation of N2 and CH4 adsorption on different charge states of boron nitride (BN) nanocage fullerene, B36N36, by using a density functional theory approach. The calculational results indicate …

Neural stimulation is used in the cochlear implant, bionic eye, and deep brain stimulation, which involves implantation of an array of electrodes into a patient's brain. The current passed through the electrodes is used to provide sensory queues or reduce symptoms associated with movement disorders and increasingly for psychological and pain therapies. Poor control of electrode properties can lead to suboptimal performance; however, there are currently no standard methods to assess them, including the electrode area and charge density. Here we demonstrate optical and electrochemical methods for measuring these electrode properties and show the charge density is dependent on electrode …

Hierarchical Porous Li 2 Mg(Nh)2@C Nanowires With Long Cycle Life Towards Stable Hydrogen Storage, Guanglin Xia, Yingbin Tan, Dan Li, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Zongwen Liu, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The hierarchical porous Li2Mg(NH)2@C nanowires full of micropores, mesopores, and macropores are successfully fabricated via a single-nozzle electrospinning technique combined with in-situ reaction between the precursors, i.e., MgCl2 and LiN3, under physical restriction upon thermal annealing. The explosive decomposition of LiN3 well dispersed in the electrospun nanowires during carbothermal treatment induces a highly porous structure, which provides a favourable way for H2 delivering in and out of Li2Mg(NH)2 nanoparticles simultaneously realized by the space-confinement of the porous carbon coating. As a result, the thus-fabricated Li2Mg(NH)2 …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Among the different energy storage systems, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely applied in various portable electronic devices due to their high energy densities, long cycle life, and lack of significant memory effect [1]. For wide-scale implementation of renewable energy, LIBs, however, face challenges related to their safety, lifetime, and cost. Based on the wide availability and low cost of sodium, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have the potential for meeting the demands of large-scale and sustainable applications. Many cathode materials have been proposed, whereas only a few anode materials have been investigated for SIBs [2]. The sodium ion (1.02 Å) …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Binder-free self-assembled 3D architecture electrodes have been fabricated by a novel convenient method. Liquid crystalline graphene oxide was used as precursor to interact with poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) in dispersion in order to form a conductive polymer entrapped, self-assembled layer-by-layer structure. This advanced network containing PEDOT:PSS enabled us to ascribe the superior electrochemical properties of particular graphene sheets. This layer-by-layer self-assembled 3D architecture of best performing composite (reduced graphene oxide-PEDOT:PSS 25) showed excellent electrochemical performance of 434 F g−1 through chemical treatment. To highlight these advances, we further explored the practicality of the as-prepared electrode by varying the composite material content. …

Integrating A Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Up-Conversion System To Enhance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Response To Sub-Bandgap Light, Andrew Nattestad, Yuen Yap Cheng, R Macqueen, Gordon G. Wallace, Timothy Schmidt

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The poor response of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to red and infrared light is a significant impediment to the realization of higher photocurrents and hence higher efficiencies. Photon up-conversion by way of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) is an attractive technique for using these otherwise wasted low energy photons to produce photocurrent, while not interfering with the photoanodic performance in a deleterious manner. Further to this, TTA-UC has a number of features, distinct from other reported photon up-conversion technologies, which renders it particularly suitable for coupling with DSC technology. In this work, a proven high performance TTA-UC system, comprising a palladium porphyrin …

Conductivity And Oxygen Reduction Activity Changes In Lanthanum Strontium Manganite Upon Low-Level Chromium Substitution, George Tsekouras, Artur Braun

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

On the timescale of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system lifetime requirements, the thermodynamically predicted low-level substitution of chromium on the B-site of (La,Sr)MnO3 could be a source of cathode degradation underlying more overt and well-known chromium poisoning mechanisms. To study this phenomenon in isolation, electronic conductivity (σ) and electrochemical oxygen reduction activity of the (La0.8Sr0.2)0.98CrxMn1−xO3 model series (x = 0, 0.02, 0.05 or 0.1) were measured in air between 850 and 650 °C. Depending on the extent of chromium substitution and the measurement temperature, electrochemical …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This work presents a novel technique which is simple yet effective in estimating electric model parameters and state-of-charge (SOC) of the LiFePO4 battery. Unlike the well-known recursive least-squares-based algorithms with single constant forgetting factor, this technique employs multiple adaptive forgetting factors to provide the capability to capture the different dynamics of model parameters. The validity of the proposed method is verified through experiments using actual driving cycles.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Single domain relaxor-PT crystals are important from both fundamental and application viewpoints. Compared to domain engineered relaxor-PT crystals, however, single domain crystals are prone to cracking during poling. In this paper, based on the analysis of the cracking phenomenon in [001] poled tetragonal 0.25Pb(In0.5Nb0.5)O3-0.37Pb(Mg 1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.38PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) crystals, the non-180°ferroelastic domain switching was thought to be the dominant factor for cracking during the poling process. A high temperature poling technique, by which the domain switching can be greatly avoided, was proposed to achieve the single domain relaxor-PT crystals. By this poling approach, a quasi-single domain crystal was obtained without cracks. In …
