Integrative Experience: Soil Microbes And The Sustainability Of Organic Agriculture, Kristen Deangelis, Luiz Domeignoz Horta

Microbiology Educational Materials

This curriculum describes a one-unit course designed to fulfill the University of Massachusetts requirement for Integrative Experience as part of the Gen Ed curriculum for undergraduates.

Astronomy 100: Exploring The Universe, Alexandra Pope Jan 2018

Astronomy 100: Exploring The Universe, Alexandra Pope

Astronomy Educational Materials

In this course, we will examine the power and limitations of scientific investigation. We will consider some of the fundamental questions addressed by astronomy and learn how the physical sciences can address these questions. While most of the objects astronomers study are remote, many provide new perspectives on the Earth, and the methods we use can be applied to many "real world" problems. Finally, we will explore what we know and don't know about the Universe and its constituent parts, and how we have reached those conclusions. In this context, students will be required to think about and solve conceptual …

Designing Sustainable Landscapes: Habitat Loss, Mowing And Plowing, Microclimate Alterations, Edge Predators, Domestic Predators, Invasive Plants, And Invasive Earthworms Metrics, Kevin Mcgarigal, Brad Compton, Ethan Plunkett, Bill Deluca, Joanna Grand Jan 2018

Designing Sustainable Landscapes: Habitat Loss, Mowing And Plowing, Microclimate Alterations, Edge Predators, Domestic Predators, Invasive Plants, And Invasive Earthworms Metrics, Kevin Mcgarigal, Brad Compton, Ethan Plunkett, Bill Deluca, Joanna Grand

Data and Datasets

This document describes a suite of stressor metrics that assess different aspects of the effects of roads and development on ecological integrity (see technical document on integrity, McGarigal et al 2017). They share a common algorithm, but each has unique parameters. These metrics are obviously highly correlated, but each assesses a different aspect of the effects of roads and development on ecological integrity. These metrics are elements of the ecological integrity analysis of the Designing Sustainable Landscapes (DSL) project (McGarigal et al 2017). Consisting of a composite of 21 stressor and resiliency metrics, the index of ecological integrity (IEI) assesses …

Physics 131: Forces, Energy And Entropy, Brokk Toggerson, David Nguyen Jan 2017

Physics 131: Forces, Energy And Entropy, Brokk Toggerson, David Nguyen

Physics Educational Materials

An openly licensed physics textbook localized for use in Physics 131: Forces, Energy, and Entropy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This book is adapted from the OpenStax College Physics textbook, the University of Maryland NEXUS Physics wikibook, the OpenStax Chemistry textbook and the statistics work of John S. Denker.

Designing Sustainable Landscapes: The Index Of Ecological Impact, Kevin Mcgarigal, Brad Compton, Ethan Plunkett, Bill Deluca, Joanna Grand Jan 2017

Designing Sustainable Landscapes: The Index Of Ecological Impact, Kevin Mcgarigal, Brad Compton, Ethan Plunkett, Bill Deluca, Joanna Grand

Data and Datasets

Includes five landscape change scenarios: 1) baseline 70-year (2010-2080) climate change and urban growth scenario without additional land protection; 2) same as #1 but with 25% more demand for new development; 3) same as #1 but with increased sprawl to the pattern of development; 4) same as #1 but with both 25% more demand for new development and increased sprawl; and 5) same as #1 but with additional terrestrial reserve areas (core areas) protected from development as established for Nature's Network landscape design (www.naturesnetwork.org).

Species Potential Range Predictions (Out Of The Weeds? Reduced Plant Invasion Risk With Climate Change In The Continental United States), Bethany Bradley, Jenica Allen Jan 2016

Species Potential Range Predictions (Out Of The Weeds? Reduced Plant Invasion Risk With Climate Change In The Continental United States), Bethany Bradley, Jenica Allen

Environmental Conservation Datasets

This PDF file contains the binary potential range prediction maps for each species in the dataset under current climate. The prediction map for each species lists the species code (see Supplemental Online Table S2 for full species names), areas predicted to be climatically suitable/unsuitable under current climate, and the occurrence points for the species. See the main publication for model fitting details.
