Electrical Resistivity Of A Thin Metallic Film, Horacio E. Camblong

The electrical resistivity of a pure sample of a thin metallic film is found to depend on the boundary conditions. This conclusion is supported by a free-electron model calculation and confirmed by an ab initio relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker computation. The low-temperature resistivity is found to be zero for a free-standing film (reflecting boundary conditions) but nonzero when the film is sandwiched between two semi-infinite samples of the same material (outgoing boundary conditions). In the latter case, this resistivity scales inversely with the number of monolayers and is due to the background diffusive scattering by a finite lattice.

Time Delay In The Kuramoto Model Of Coupled Oscillators, Stephen M.K. Yeung, S H. Strogatz

We generalize the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators to allow time-delayed interactions. New phenomena include bistability between synchronized and incoherent states, and unsteady solutions with time-dependent order parameters. We derive exact formulas for the stability boundaries of the incoherent and synchronized states, as a function of the delay, in the special case where the oscillators are identical. The experimental implications of the model are discussed for populations of chirping crickets, where the finite speed of sound causes communication delays, and for physical systems such as coupled phase-locked loops or lasers.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel analysis of lipooligosaccharide (LOS) from Neisseria meningitidis has demonstrated considerable microheterogeneity in the variable region of LOS due to the presence of novel glycoforms. As a step toward understanding the basis for the expression of these novel glycoforms, we have examined the LOS structures and UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (epimerase) activity levels in two strains (NMB and MA-1) and their respective galE mutants. Strain NMB was found to have low epimerase activity and to contain multiple glycoforms, some of which appear to contain only glucose sugars. The galE mutant had only the oligoglucose glycoforms. Theoretical computations were carried out to determine the structure and molecular parameters of the BNSi molecule. The most stable isomer is found to have a BNSi linear geometry. Thermal functions as derived from the theoretical computed molecular parameters were used in the evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of BNSi from high-temperature Knudsen effusion mass spectrometric equilibrium data. From the reactions analyzed by the second-law and third-law methods, the enthalpy of formation,ΔfHo0, and of atomization, ΔaHo0, in kJ mol−1, for BNSi, were obtained as 398±16 and 1078±17, respectively.

Equilibria involving the isomers AlNC and AlCN above a mixture of aluminum nitride, graphite, and gold contained in a graphite Knudsen cell were investigated with a mass spectrometer. The enthalpies of formation,ΔfHo0, and of atomization, ΔaHo0, in kJ mol−1, for AlNC and AlCN, were derived as 281.3±14 and 303.8±14, and as 1228.1±15 and 1205.6±15, respectively.

We consider the contribution of neutron stars and black holes to the dynamical mass of galactic halos. In particular, we show that if these compact objects were produced by an early generation of stars with initial metallicity 10-4 Z, they can contribute at most 30%-40% of the Galactic halo mass without creating supersolar levels of enrichment. We show that the case for halo neutron stars and black holes cannot be rejected on metal overproduction arguments alone because of the critical factor of the choice of progenitor metallicity in determining the yields.
