Advances in nanofabrication methods have enabled the tailoring of new strategies towards the controlled production of nanoparticles with attractive applications in healthcare. In many cases, their characterisation remains a big challenge, particularly for small-sized functional nanoparticles of 5 nm diameter or smaller, where current particle sizing techniques struggle to provide the required sensitivity and accuracy. There is a clear need for the development of new reliable characterisation approaches for the physico-chemical characterisation of nanoparticles with significant accuracy, particularly for the analysis of the particles in the presence of complex biological fluids. Herein, we show that the Differential Centrifugal Sedimentation can …

The structures of [Cu(AA)6](ClO4)2, (I), and [Mn(AA)6](ClO4)2, (II) (AA is acrylamide, also known as prop-2-enamide; C3H5NO), display both intra- and intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonding. A three-dimensional network is propagated via the perchlorate counter-ions. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the copper complex, with the most significant difference between them being the conformation of one symmetry-related pair of AA ligands which are in the unusual syn conformation. The copper complex exhibits syn/anti disorder of the =CH2 group in one pair of symmetry-related AA ligands. The CuII and MnII centres are both situated on centres of inversion. The copper complex cation …

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor Jan 2006

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor

Conference Papers

The following paper discusses the implications of government policy on widening of participation at third level institutes. The increase in ‘non-traditional’ students has been widely recognised on an international scale; however some inequality issues still exist. The ‘struggles’ associated with widening of participation and creating a ‘new’ student type is discussed in particular reference to chemistry education. A change in mindset of staff on their pedagogical approach to cater for a diverse student body with a broad range of learner types is required. This must be supported from a departmental and institutional level. A look at the literature to investigate …

Solubilisation, Purification And Processing Of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Organic Molecules, Theresa Hedderman Jan 2006

Solubilisation, Purification And Processing Of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Organic Molecules, Theresa Hedderman

Doctoral

The aims of this research are seven fold; • To enhance the solubility of SWNTs in organic solvents. • To purify an untreated sample of SWNTs that contains many side products. • To gain a greater understanding of the interaction between the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and SWNTs. • To debundle and disperse SWNTs. • To select SWNTs of a specific structure based on the structures of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons used. • To observe and compare the interaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with SWNTs produced by different methods. • To elucidate factors which contribute to different degrees of interaction between …

Promoting Learning Through Peer Group Work, Christine O'Connor, Renli Ma

Conference Papers

The session aimed to help the Summer School participants develop tasks and assessment strategies of peer group work in their own teaching.

Synthesis Of The Fungicide Propiconazole A Systemic Foliar Fungicide., Hazel Delaney Mar 2000

Synthesis Of The Fungicide Propiconazole A Systemic Foliar Fungicide., Hazel Delaney

Masters

Propiconazole, 1-[[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-propyl-1, 3-dioxol-2-yl[methyl]-1H-1,2,4-triazole, commercially know as “Tilt” is a systemic foliar fungicide for cereals and is widely used in agriculture. The aim of this project was to develop an economically feasible process for the production of propiconazole and to maximise the yields of the intermediates in the developed process. Processes investigated included the original Ciba-Geigy process. In addition an investigation into the synthesis and characterisation of the impurities formed, and reported to be formed in each step of the reaction process was carried out and seven of the reported impurities were synthesised. One impurity was shown not to be present …

Solvent Impregnated Resins For The Recovery Of Gold From Gold(I)Thiourea Solutions, Fiona Fitzpatrick Jan 1997

Solvent Impregnated Resins For The Recovery Of Gold From Gold(I)Thiourea Solutions, Fiona Fitzpatrick

Masters

Solvent Impregnated Resins (SIRs) are high surface area, macroporous, polymeric resins which have been physically impregnated with an organic solvent. In this research, three resins have been impregnated with Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid, a solvent which has shown selectivity to gold. The ability of the resins to recover gold (1) thiourea perchlorate from solution has been investigated. The resins have been studied both bare and when impregnated with the solvent and their efficiency was seen to increase upon impregnation. The overall efficiency of the resins was found to be pH dependent. It is also related to the level of impregnation of …

Aspects Of Gold Recovery From An Indigenous Ore, Cormac Patrick Mcnamee Jan 1993

Aspects Of Gold Recovery From An Indigenous Ore, Cormac Patrick Mcnamee

Masters

This project involved the investigation into the basic electrochemistry of the thiourea-formamidine disulphide redox couple and an estimation of the formal potential, Eo1 for the couple. By carrying out optimisation experiments on the leaching of gold from an ore sample from the Avoca mine in Co. Wicklow, the optimum leaching conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction. The effects of various organic and inorganic species on the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon and modified peat were investigated with the use of factorial designed experiments. The Langmuir Isotherm model was applied to estimate the capacity of the carbon for these …
