Seismic Anisotropy And The Mantle Dynamics Beneath The Arabian Plate, Saleh Ismail Hassan Qaysi
Seismic Anisotropy And The Mantle Dynamics Beneath The Arabian Plate, Saleh Ismail Hassan Qaysi
Doctoral Dissertations
"We investigate mantle seismic azimuthal anisotropy and deformation beneath the Arabian Plate and adjacent areas using data from 182 broadband seismic stations which include 157 stations managed by the Saudi Geological Survey. A total of about 4000 pairs of shear wave splitting parameters are obtained using the transverse minimization technique. The individual XKS (including PKS, SKS, and SKKS) splitting measurements were manually checked to ensure the quality. The well-defined parameters show dominantly N-S fast orientations at the majority of the stations, and NW-SE fast orientations along the Zagras Mountain front. No clear systematic variations of the splitting parameters as a …

Harmful Algae, Algal Toxin, Taste And Odor Control And Mitigation In Public Water System, Haiting Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
“Recent years, harmful algal blooms occurrence has increased quickly in the surface water worldwide, which has become a concern for drinking water plants due to the ability of toxic algae (cyanobacteria) to produce cyanotoxins including microcystins (MCs), mainly MC-LR, cylindrospermopsin (CYN), and taste and odor (T&O) compounds. Various types of chemicals are widely used in drinking water treatment plants as oxidants for treating source water challenged with harmful algal blooms. In this study, the release and degradation of intracellular MC-LR due to oxidation of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), most common specie of cyanobacteria, was examined kinetically. Effect of …

Masters Theses
"The 3C-2D multicomponent seismic survey was acquired in the Blackfoot Field, which is located 15 km southeast of Strathmore, Alberta. The 2 Hz vertical component data were reprocessed to better image the target reservoir, the Glauconitic sand formation at approximately 1150 ms. The zone of the major reflector at about 1550 ms was also taken into consideration to determine the better seismic section for further processing. The main characteristics of the converted wave processing, such as common conversion point (CCP), asymptotic binning, gamma ratios, receiver statics, rotation of the data, positive/negative offsets, and anisotropy, were also summarized in this study. …
Solidification Rate Detection Through Solid-Liquid Interface Tracking, Wei Luo
Solidification Rate Detection Through Solid-Liquid Interface Tracking, Wei Luo
Masters Theses
”Studying the melt pool dynamics in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing is vital to predict the microstructure of the built part. High-speed synchrotron hard X-ray imaging is an advanced technique to monitor the LPBF process in situ and in real time. However, it is very challenging to track the solid-liquid interface due to the low image contrast, high image noise and unstable intensity of the image sequences.
In this paper, we propose an solid-liquid interface detector with human interaction to track the interface to compute the solidification rate of the melt pool. The proposed method includes six independent …

3d Seismic Imaging Of Submarine Stratovolcanic And Salt Structures Beneath The Taranaki Basin, New Zealand And The Gulf Of Mexico, Ersin Erdem Unkaracalar
Masters Theses
"The relationship of submarine stratovolcanic and salt structures with overlying sediments creates a significant role in the petroleum system due to the emplacement and burial of volcano and salt. This study characterizes the spatial and temporal distribution of structural and stratigraphic features associated with submarine stratovolcano and salt body to provide insights for elements and processes of petroleum geology related to regional tectonics.
The stratovolcanic and salt structures are clearly identified on seismic sections. However, distortion of ray paths passing through the salt and turning seismic waves prevents accurate identification of steep flanks of salt. The seismic response to a …

Analyzing Large Scale Trajectory Data To Identify Users With Similar Behavior, Tyler Clark Percy
Masters Theses
"In today's society, social networks are a popular way to connect with friends and family and share what's going on in your life. With the Internet connecting us all closer than ever before, it is increasingly common to use social networks to meet new friends online that share similar interests instead of only connecting with those you already know. For the problem of attempting to connect people with similar interests, this paper proposes the foundation for a Geo-social network that aims to extract the semantic meaning from users' location history and use this information to find the similarity between users. …
Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk
Models For High Dimensional Spatially Correlated Risks And Application To Thunderstorm Loss Data In Texas, Tobias Merk
Masters Theses
"Insurance claims caused by natural disasters exhibit spatial dependence with the strength of dependence being based on factors such as physical distance and population density, to name a few. Accounting for spatial dependence is therefore of crucial importance when modeling these types of claims. In this work, we present an approach to assess spatially dependent insurance risks using a combination of linear regression and factor copula models. Specifically, in loss modeling, observed dependence patterns are highly nonlinear, thus copula-based models seem appropriate since they can handle both linear and nonlinear dependence. The factor copula approach for estimating the spatial dependence …

Conical Folds -- An Artifact Of Using Simple Geometric Shapes To Describe A Complex Geologic Structure, Avery Joseph Welker
Conical Folds -- An Artifact Of Using Simple Geometric Shapes To Describe A Complex Geologic Structure, Avery Joseph Welker
Masters Theses
"Accurate representation of the 3D shapes of natural folds is essential to characterization of the dynamic models for fold formation. Geometrical analysis of folds commonly relies upon analyzing patterns defined by the variation in the orientation of poles to planar surfaces deformed by a shortening event when plotted using graphical calculators (e.g., stereogram, polar tangent diagrams) to interpret the shape of folds. Stereograms for which orientation data define small circles are classified as non-cylindrical regular folds and are interpreted as "conical folds," where the shape of the fold is represented by a cone that terminates at a point. Utilizing similar …

Fully Differential Study Of Dissociative Capture In P + H₂ Collisions, Basu Ram Lamichhane
Doctoral Dissertations
"In recent years, the key role of the projectile coherence properties has been studied in several ion-atom scattering processes. These studies strongly suggested that cross sections could be significantly affected by the projectile coherence properties, especially for fast, heavy ions. In the present study, we used such coherence effects as a tool to sensitively analyze the few- body dynamics of the scattering process. To this end, we performed three kinematically complete experiments on fragmentation of H2 by 75 keV proton impacts. A novel approach was used to analyze coherence and interference effects in the observed cross-sections. The idea was …

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger
On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger
Doctoral Dissertations
"Insurance companies sometimes face catastrophic losses, yet they must remain solvent enough to meet the legal obligation of covering all claims. Catastrophes can result in large damages to the policyholders, causing the arrival of numerous claims to insurance companies at once. Furthermore, the severity of an event could impact the time until the next occurrence. An insurer needs certain levels of startup capital to meet all claims, and then must have adequate reserves on a continual basis, even more so when catastrophes occur. This work examines two facets of these matters: for an infinite time horizon, we extend and develop …
Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman
Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman
Doctoral Dissertations
"For the last several decades, it has been apparent that new methods of identifying explosives can help investigators trace their origins. One way to identify an explosive is through the use of taggants: materials added to a product that encodes information about the product such as when it was manufactured.
This research investigates the survivability of a new identification taggant called the Nuclear Barcode that overcomes some of the downfalls that have been identified in prior taggants. The Nuclear Barcode encodes information as a unique combination of concentrations of rare earths (Ho, Eu, Sm, Lu, and Dy) and precious metals …
Dragline Excavation Simulation, Real-Time Terrain Recognition And Object Detection, Godfred Somua-Gyimah
Dragline Excavation Simulation, Real-Time Terrain Recognition And Object Detection, Godfred Somua-Gyimah
Doctoral Dissertations
"The contribution of coal to global energy is expected to remain above 30% through 2030. Draglines are the preferred excavation equipment in most surface coal mines. Recently, studies toward dragline excavation efficiency have focused on two specific areas. The first area is dragline bucket studies, where the goal is to develop new designs which perform better than conventional buckets. Drawbacks in the current approach include operator inconsistencies and the inability to physically test every proposed design. Previous simulation models used Distinct Element Methods (DEM) but they over-predict excavation forces by 300% to 500%. In this study, a DEM-based simulation model …

Design And Characterization Of Multi-Spectral Underwater Beam-Port For Pool-Type Research Reactors, Meshari Mesfer Alqahtani
Doctoral Dissertations
“The beam-port is a cardinal facility at research reactors necessary for dry irradiation, testing and measurement experiments. The Missouri University of Science and Technology Reactor (MSTR) is one such reactor with a beam-port. Installation of additional beam-port in such reactor facilities can be prohibitive. A novel remedy to this is an underwater beam-port for pool-type reactors. The design and characterization of a conceptual underwater multi-spectral beam-port for neutron and gamma fluxes were completed for the MSTR. The neutron spectra from the MSTR were simulated using the Monte Carlo N-particle (MCNP). The determined neutron spectra were experimentally validated using SAND-II. The …
Cyber-Physical Security Of An Electric Microgrid, Prashanth Palaniswamy
Cyber-Physical Security Of An Electric Microgrid, Prashanth Palaniswamy
Masters Theses
"Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are physical systems that are controlled or monitored by computer-based systems. CPSs are a combination of computation, networking, and physical processes. As CPSs are a combination of various diverse components, they are vulnerable to several security threats. Moreover, there are many different security domains (not just high/low, nor necessarily hierarchical). This paper utilizes previously developed multiple security domain nondeducibility (MSDND) to uncover potential integrity vulnerabilities in an electric microgrid. Invariants are manually generated using the insights obtained through MSDND analysis and use linear regression to automate the generation of invariants. The vulnerabilities are then mitigated, to the …

Part I: Design, Synthesis, And Studies Of Novel Age-Inhibitors And Age-Breakers; Part Ii: Novel Synthetic Methods For Organofluorine Compound, Jatin Mehta
Doctoral Dissertations
"Novel small molecule inhibitors and breakers of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) have been synthesized and their in vitro inhibitory activities have been studied by 13C NMR, fluorescence, and UV-visible spectroscopy. We have demonstrated that these AGE-inhibitors and AGE-breakers were found to be more effective in their sequestration of AGE intermediates, such as dehydroascorbate (DHA) than the state-of-the art phenacylthiazolium bromide (PTB)-based AGE-inhibitors and AGE-breakers. Citric acid and other polyphenolic antioxidants have substantial AGE inhibitory effects in the D-glucose/leucine or benzylamine Maillard reaction model systems, and thus they are suitable as dietary additives for ameliorating AGE-induced complications.
Organofluorine compounds have …

Incremental Proper Orthogonal Decomposition For Pde Simulation Data: Algorithms And Analysis, Hiba Fareed
Doctoral Dissertations
"We propose an incremental algorithm to compute the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of simulation data for a partial differential equation. Specifically, we modify an incremental matrix SVD algorithm of Brand to accommodate data arising from Galerkin-type simulation methods for time dependent PDEs. We introduce an incremental SVD algorithm with respect to a weighted inner product to compute the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The algorithm is applicable to data generated by many numerical methods for PDEs, including finite element and discontinuous Galerkin methods. We also modify the algorithm to initialize and incrementally update both the SVDand an error bound during the …
Aerogels For Energy Storage Applications: From Shape Memory Materials To Thermites And Explosives, Suraj Donthula
Aerogels For Energy Storage Applications: From Shape Memory Materials To Thermites And Explosives, Suraj Donthula
Doctoral Dissertations
"Aerogels are three dimensional highly porous solid objects that provide density reduction compared to dense objects. Those materials can have applications in different classes of energy storage and the two types that are focused in this dissertation are mechanical energy and thermal energy storage. Shape memory materials can store and recover elastic deformation energy when triggered by an external stimulus such as temperature. To incorporate those properties, shape memory polymeric aerogels (SMPA) were synthesized from a rigid isocyanurate containing triisocyanate (N3300 A) and four short oligomeric derivatives of ethylene glycol: H(OCH2CH2)nOH (1 ≤ n …
Cox-Type Model Validation With Recurrent Event Data, Muna Mohamed Hammuda
Cox-Type Model Validation With Recurrent Event Data, Muna Mohamed Hammuda
Doctoral Dissertations
"Recurrent event data occurs in many disciplines such as actuarial science, biomedical studies, sociology, and environment to name a few. It is therefore important to develop models that describe the dynamic evolution of the event occurrences. One major problem of interest to researchers with these types of data is models for the distribution function of the time between events occurrences, especially in the presence of covariates that play a major role in having a better understanding of time to events.
This work pertains to statistical inference of the regression parameter and the baseline hazard function in a Cox-type model for …
Disorder At First-Order Classical And Quantum Phase Transitions, Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim
Disorder At First-Order Classical And Quantum Phase Transitions, Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation studies the effects of quenched disorder on classical, quantum and nonequilibrium phase transitions. After a short introduction which covers the basic concepts of phase transitions, finite-size scaling and random disorder, the dissertation focuses on four separate but related projects. First, we investigate the influence of quenched disorder with long-range spatial correlations on the nonequilibrium phase transitions in the contact process. We show that the long-range correlations increase the probability to find rare atypical regions in the sample. This leads to enhanced Griffiths singularities and changes the universality class of the transition.
Project 2 and 3 focus on disorder …

Evaluation Of The Redesign Of A Stem Gatekeeper Course, General Chemistry I, Incorporating Active-Learning Strategies And Implementation Of A Student-Choice Model, Travis Rae Mcdowell
Doctoral Dissertations
"The first courses freshman university students typically enroll in are the introductory science and math, courses that bridge from and build upon their prior educational experiences. These introductory courses often have large enrollment lectures coupled with supplemental sessions to teach using traditional educational practices, which may operate counter to the attitudes and culture of the students who take them. To address this, the general chemistry faculty through collaboration with a team of educational specialists initiated a redesign of the general chemistry course, which primarily serves first-year undergraduates. The redesign efforts included changes such as reducing lecture time and placing emphasis …
Evolving Specialization In An Agent-Based Model Without Task-Switching Costs, Shane Robert Meyer
Evolving Specialization In An Agent-Based Model Without Task-Switching Costs, Shane Robert Meyer
Doctoral Dissertations
"This work examines the possibility of evolving the phenotypic specialization associated with division of labor in an agent-based model without task-switching costs. The model examines two groups competing for vital resources, where members of one group are capable of sharing resources with other agents in their group. Agents attempt to collect resources which allow them to reproduce, with more resources leading to a greater number of offspring by asexual reproduction. Four variants of the model are examined, with combinations of one or two resources and the presence of a foraging risk. The presence of the foraging risk can lead to …
Hdg Methods For Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Pdes, Yangwen Zhang
Hdg Methods For Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Pdes, Yangwen Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
"We begin an investigation of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for approximating the solution of Dirichlet boundary control problems for PDEs. These problems can involve atypical variational formulations, and often have solutions with low regularity on polyhedral domains. These issues can provide challenges for numerical methods and the associated numerical analysis. In this thesis, we use an existing HDG method for a Dirichlet boundary control problem for the Poisson equation, and obtain optimal a priori error estimates for the control in the high regularity case. We also propose a new HDG method to approximate the solution of a Dirichlet boundary …
