Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are two major groups of PFAS will be subjected to the Maximal Contamination Concentration (MCL) of 4 ng/l in drinking water to be implemented by the U.S. EPA by 2025. How to accurately predict toxicity of PFAS with varied carbon chain length is important for treatment and sequential removal from drinking water. This study presents Quantitative Structure and Activity Relationship (QSAR) models developed through both linear regression and two order regression. Log P is compiled from reference and carbon content is counted as the molecule represented. Bioconcentration potential is predicted from CompTox.The …

In mathematical measure theory, the “Ham-Sandwich” theorem states that any n objects in an n-dimensional Euclidean space can be simultaneously divided in half with a single cut by an (n-1)-dimensional hyperplane. While it guarantees its existence, the theorem does not provide a way of finding this halving hyperplane, as it is only an existence result. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a diverse and ecologically important species found in most of the world’s oceans. The current lack of taxonomic knowledge and relative abundance compromises our ability to predict species diversity numbers and, thus, their ecological roles and impacts on coral reefs. To gather a better understanding of the state of knowledge of crustose coralline algae taxonomy in the Caribbean, 107 different research papers, and other primary and secondary literature were studied; any source with taxonomical information, species identification, or genetic markers for identification was recorded. While the region enjoys economic prosperity, the hidden cost of deteriorating air quality and adverse health effects from vehicle emissions necessitates urgent attention. Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a potential solution, promising reduced emissions, and increased energy efficiency. Biscayne Bay is a coastal estuary that historically relied on rainfall and groundwater inputs from the karst Biscayne aquifer. The construction of major canals along the coastline has released point-source freshwater inputs into the bay, detrimentally affecting the Bay’s ecosystem balance. This project investigates the proportional inputs of freshwater between the wet and dry seasons in Deering Estate, adjacent to Biscayne Bay. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) function as a tool for the protection and conservation of marine ecosystems. These designated areas should be free of any environmentally harmful pollutants. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic fragments measuring less than 5 mm (about 0.2 in). These fragments are an emerging threat to our oceans, and we are investigating the effectiveness of MPAs against these pollutants. Libraries can play a role in navigating the AI era by integrating these tools into information literacy (IL) programs. To implement generative AI tools like ChatGPT effectively, it is important to understand the attitudes of library professionals involved in IL instruction toward this tool and their intention to use it for instruction. This study explored perceptions of ChatGPT using survey data that included acceptance factors and potential uses derived from the emerging literature. While some librarians saw potential, others found it too unreliable to be useful; yet the vast majority imagined utilizing the tool in the future.

This paper examines the performance of ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM), in a geographic information systems (GIS) exam. As LLMs like ChatGPT become increasingly prevalent in various domains, including education, it is important to understand their capabilities and limitations in specialized subject areas such as GIS. Human learning of spatial concepts significantly differs from LLM training methodologies. This dissertation is the culmination of a 1.5-year research project into the unique ecology of gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) at the southeasternmost extent of the species’ range. This study population occupies the globally imperiled pine rockland ecosystem of Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA, of which >98% no longer exists outside Everglades National Park. My research unveiled a seasonal shift in the diet of the gopher tortoise population where individuals became more specialized in the wet season (June to November) than in the dry season (December to May). This temporal difference in diet specialization coincided with a shift toward frugivory. …

Fast and accurate identification of peptides and proteins from the mass spectrometry (MS) data is a critical problem in modern systems biology. Database peptide search is the most commonly used computational method to identify peptide sequences from the MS data. In this method, giga-bytes of experimentally generated MS data are compared against tera-byte sized databases of theoretically simulated MS data resulting in a compute- and data-intensive problem requiring days or weeks of computational times on desktop machines. Wildfires produce large runoff volumes, sometimes in the form of debris flows (water-laden slurries of soil and rock that move rapidly through channels in steep landscapes) in response to moderate to severe precipitation events. For instance, in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties following the 2017 Thomas Fire, on January 9th, 2018, an intense atmospheric river flood resulted in a series of destructive water and debris flows causing major damage to life and property. Ecological modeling is a popular tool to assess the functionality of marine ecosystems and quantify an ecosystem’s response to anthropogenic stressors (e.g., fishing, oil spills, climate change). However, much of the global modeling effort has been focused on coastal regions that are generally more data-rich than the area seaward of the continental shelf (i.e., oceanic zone). This paper explores Null Island, a fictional place located at 0° latitude and 0° longitude in the WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984) geographic coordinate system. Null Island is erroneously associated with large amounts of geographic data in a wide variety of location-based services, place databases, social media and web-based maps. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an extremely complex mixture of organic molecules ubiquitous in aquatic systems and a critical component of the global carbon cycle. Little is known about DOM structural composition at the molecular level. The work presented in this dissertation summarizes the development of a novel analytical toolbox based on trapped ion mobility spectrometry and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (TIMS-FT-ICR MS) that has significantly contributed to expand our knowledge of DOM molecular complexity and diversity. DREAM belongs to the NCS family, and it is involved in several physiological processes mediated by Ca2+ association, which produces changes in its oligomerization state. The mechanism of how Ca2+ binds to DREAM remains unknown. A kinetic study of the binding of Ca2+ to DREAM suggested that DREAM dimerization is a two-step process, the first step( τ1= 8±0.1ms) is associated with the binding of Ca2+ to the monomer, while the second step (τ2 = 3.6 ±0.4 s ) corresponds to a conformation relaxation that leads to the dimerization.
