The Shifting Landscape Of Adolescent Wellness In Boarding Schools: Can Time Spent Off Screens And Outdoors Improve Adolescent Wellbeing?, Kristen H. Peterson Jan 2024

The Shifting Landscape Of Adolescent Wellness In Boarding Schools: Can Time Spent Off Screens And Outdoors Improve Adolescent Wellbeing?, Kristen H. Peterson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

For nearly twenty years I have worked directly with adolescents as an independent school educator. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the dorm, I have observed and supported students through their middle and high school experiences. During this time, I have witnessed an alarming shift in adolescent physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Concurrently, I have observed a dramatic increase in the amount of time students spend using screen-based devices, and a decrease in their time spent outdoors.

Using research to ground my anecdotal accounts in empirical understanding, my thesis examines whether or not screen use might help …

Poster, Performed: Understanding Public Opinions Of Authorship In Generative Artificial Intelligence Models Via Analogy, Wylie Z. Kasai Jan 2024

Poster, Performed: Understanding Public Opinions Of Authorship In Generative Artificial Intelligence Models Via Analogy, Wylie Z. Kasai

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Over the last decade, generative artificial intelligence models have advanced significantly and provided the public with several tools to create new works of art. However, the true authorship of these works has been debated due to their training on web-scraped data. Serving as an analogy to these larger models, Poster, Performed is an interactive artificial intelligence exhibition project that uses image assets submitted by the public to create poster compositions with custom image processing algorithms. During the course of a four-day exhibition, visitors were asked to identify the exhibition’s primary artist from five options: (1) participants who submitted image assets, …

(Meta-)Physical Artworks: Digital Augmentation In Art Observation, Macy A. Toppan Jan 2024

(Meta-)Physical Artworks: Digital Augmentation In Art Observation, Macy A. Toppan

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Augmented art— the subgenre of art that incorporates physical and digital artwork— is a rapidly growing field driven by advancing technology and a new generation for whom that tech is a given. Yet the presence of media like augmented and virtual reality in exhibition remains a controversial subject. Rather than focusing on the many theoretical debates about whether digital pieces can qualify as "good" art, we study it in practice through the eyes of the casual art observer. This paper highlights the audience in a within-participant study that asked viewers to take in a physical sculpture intentionally built with virtual …

A Bayesian Inversion For Emissions And Export Productivity Across The End-Cretaceous Boundary, Alexander A. Cox Jan 2024

A Bayesian Inversion For Emissions And Export Productivity Across The End-Cretaceous Boundary, Alexander A. Cox

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The end-Cretaceous mass extinction was marked by both the Chicxulub impact and the ongoing emplacement of the Deccan Traps flood basalt province. Both of these events perturbed the environment by the emission of climate-active volatiles, primarily CO2 and SO2. To understand the mechanism of extinction, we must disentangle the timing, duration, and intensity of volcanic and meteoritic environmental forcings. In this thesis, we used a parallel Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to invert for the aforementioned volatile emissions, export productivity, and remineralization from 67 to 65 million years ago using the LOSCAR (Long-term Ocean-atmosphere-Sediment CArbon cycle Reservoir) model. The parallel …

Triple Helix: Ai-Artist-Audience Collaboration In A Performative Art Experience, Xuedan Zou Dec 2023

Triple Helix: Ai-Artist-Audience Collaboration In A Performative Art Experience, Xuedan Zou

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Imagine an art exhibition that morphs its content according to the audience’s experience like a chameleon, reflecting the audience’s mind and culture and turning the artist’s exhibition into the viewer’s. But when the viewers leave, the work fades back to the creator’s original work and waits for the next audience. In this project, my team introduced an interactive exhibition called "Triple Helix," where audience members were provided the opportunity to alter the artworks created by the artist, thus imbuing them with their own perspectives. This interactive exhibition was held at three physical-locations and online, and a comprehensive user study was …

Energy-Aware Path Planning For Fixed-Wing Seaplane Uavs, Benjamin Atkinson Wolsieffer Sep 2023

Energy-Aware Path Planning For Fixed-Wing Seaplane Uavs, Benjamin Atkinson Wolsieffer

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are commonly used for remote sensing applications over water bodies, such as monitoring water quality or tracking harmful algal blooms. However, there are some types of measurements that are difficult to accurately obtain from the air. In existing work, water samples have been collected in situ either by hand, with an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), or with a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAV such as a multirotor. We propose a path planner, landing control algorithm, and energy estimator that will allow a low-cost and energy efficient fixed-wing UAV to carry out a combined remote …

Anatoview: Using Interactive 3d Visualizations With Augmented Reality Support For Laypersons’ Medical Education In Informed Consent Processes, Michelle Chen Aug 2023

Anatoview: Using Interactive 3d Visualizations With Augmented Reality Support For Laypersons’ Medical Education In Informed Consent Processes, Michelle Chen

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

AnatoView is an interactive multimedia educational application that visualizes medical procedures in three-dimensional (3D), augmented reality (AR) space. By providing visual and spatial information of medical procedures, AnatoView acts as a learning supplement for laypersons/patients in informed consent (IC) processes — wherein instructional content is traditionally limited to purely spoken explanations that lead to poor patient comprehension. We design a mixed study and conduct a randomized, controlled trial with 15 laypersons as participants: administering a traditional IC process to a control group, and an IC process supplemented by the use of AnatoView to experimental groups. As a primary outcome, medical …

Parameterization Of Cryosat-2 Radar Waveforms Across The Greenland Ice Sheet, Alexander Clark Ronan Jun 2023

Parameterization Of Cryosat-2 Radar Waveforms Across The Greenland Ice Sheet, Alexander Clark Ronan

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Geodetic surface mass balance calculations regularly rely on satellite radar altimeters such as CryoSat-2 to understand elevation and volume changes of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). However, the impact of changing GrIS shallow subsurface stratigraphic conditions on CryoSat-2 elevation products is poorly understood. We seek to investigate the long-term impacts of changing surface and shallow subsurface conditions on CryoSat-2 Level 2 elevation products derived from the Offset Center of Gravity (OCOG), Ocean - Customer Furnished Item (CFI), and University College London (UCL) Land-Ice retracking algorithms through the analysis of radar waveform characteristics. We further investigate time series from 2010 to …

Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine May 2023

Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Augmented reality (AR) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) introduce new considerations for the long-standing debate of what it means for digital art to be “real.” However, the ability to create AR experiences is limited to those who are technically skilled or who can afford to consult someone else. This paper addresses the need for an accessible tool that enables artists of all technical backgrounds to expressively create marks in AR. The solution includes a mobile application called CrayonAR. The system was designed to be modular, minimal, and physically engaging, and was developed in Unity using ARFoundation and Firebase Storage and Realtime …

Downstream Gradients In Unit Stream Power Influence Log Jam Location And Process Domain, Eliza H. Malakoff May 2023

Downstream Gradients In Unit Stream Power Influence Log Jam Location And Process Domain, Eliza H. Malakoff

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Growing calls for the use of natural materials and processes to meet management goals have positioned artificial log jams as a compelling alternative to hard engineering instream and floodplain habitat. Deep uncertainties remain, however, about where and how wood should be placed to best mimic natural river processes. In this study, I test whether at-a-point or downstream gradients in unit stream power, an estimate of a river’s ability to do work, exert control over where and how log jams form. Using field observations of 360 log jams in New Hampshire and Vermont and an additional 320 previously published locations of …

Sprout: Using A Garden Metaphor To Visualize And Support Customizable And Collaborative Health Tracking, Pape Sow Traoré May 2023

Sprout: Using A Garden Metaphor To Visualize And Support Customizable And Collaborative Health Tracking, Pape Sow Traoré

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Self-tracking tools have become increasingly popular, especially with the advent of wearable technology and smartphone applications. However, traditional tracking tools often display data in a quantitative format that can be overwhelming and cause users to abandon their tracking efforts. Additionally, these tools typically provide a generic user experience and are designed from a single-user perspective, lacking external support. To overcome these limitations, we develop Sprout, a mobile data-tracking application that offers a more qualitative, customizable, and collaborative experience for health monitoring and management. Sprout uses a garden metaphor to visually represent health information and allows users to tailor their …

Beyond News Values On Twitter: Predicting Factors That Drive User Engagement In News, Zhiyan Zhong Apr 2023

Beyond News Values On Twitter: Predicting Factors That Drive User Engagement In News, Zhiyan Zhong

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

When deciding on what news stories to cover, traditional journalism determines news values by following several elements of newsworthiness, such as impact, timeliness, and prominence. However, these guidelines do not always seem to correspond with the success of content on social media. As people are increasingly turning to social media for news, our research aims to understand and predict factors that drive user engagement for news on social media. In this study, we analyze news content published on Twitter, and examine a diverse set of characteristics like metrics retrieved from the Twitter API and semantics by natural language processing, including …

Integrating Remote And In-Situ Techniques To Quantify Landscape Evolution, Matthew Maclay Jan 2023

Integrating Remote And In-Situ Techniques To Quantify Landscape Evolution, Matthew Maclay

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

With the increasing availability and resolution of remote sensing techniques, the resulting data products are increasingly being applied to answer societally relevant questions regarding quantifying the effects of climate change, mitigating natural hazards, and understanding landscape changes over varying temporal and spatial scales. While the power and potential for such large-scale, efficient, and cost-effective surveys are undeniable, a thorough understanding of any environment requires that remotely sensed data are ground-truthed or put into context with in-situ observations. In this thesis, Chapter 1 presents a literature review of Martian analog sites and discusses the importance of integrating in-situ and remote sensing …

Wildfire Activity, Climate Response, And Ice Core Signal Preservation In The North Pacific Region, Margaret Lonergan Jan 2023

Wildfire Activity, Climate Response, And Ice Core Signal Preservation In The North Pacific Region, Margaret Lonergan

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Wildfires have become more destructive over recent decades with climate change, so understanding how fire regimes will change with further climate change is critical for effective fire management practices. Paleofire records provide insight into how fire regimes have responded to temperature and precipitation variability in the past. Ice cores, such as the Denali ice core from central Alaska, capture regional-scale fire proxies including black carbon at an annual resolution for centuries to millennia. This makes them ideally suited to construct high temporal resolution, regional paleofire records extending back into the Common Era. However, it is critical to understand the instrumental …

An Interactive System For Generating Music From Moving Images, Hanlin Wang Jan 2023

An Interactive System For Generating Music From Moving Images, Hanlin Wang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Moving images contain a wealth of information pertaining to motion. Motivated by the interconnectedness of music and movement, we present a framework for transforming the kinetic qualities of moving images into music. We developed an interactive software system that takes video as input and maps its motion attributes into the musical dimension based on perceptually grounded principles. The system combines existing sonification frameworks with theories and techniques of generative music. To evaluate the system, we conducted a two-part experiment. First, we asked participants to make judgements on video-audio correspondence from clips generated by the system. Second, we asked participants to …

Simulating Incompressible Thin-Film Fluid With A Moving Eulerian-Lagrangian Particle Method, Yitong Deng Jan 2023

Simulating Incompressible Thin-Film Fluid With A Moving Eulerian-Lagrangian Particle Method, Yitong Deng

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In this thesis, we introduce a Moving Eulerian-Lagrangian Particle (MELP) method, a mesh-free method to simulate incompressible thin-film fluid systems: soap bubbles, bubble clusters, and foams. The realistic simulation of such systems depends upon the successful treatment of three aspects: (1) the soap film's deformation due to the tendency to minimize the surface energy, giving rise to the bouncy characteristics of soap bubbles, (2) the tangential fluid flow on the thin film, causing the thickness to vary spatially, which in conjunction with thin-film interference creates evolving and highly sophisticated iridescent color patterns, (3) the topological changes due to collision, separation, …

Timing And Source Of Water Supporting Early Lakes In The Xanthe Terra Region Of Mars, Noemi A. Ortega Dominguez Jan 2023

Timing And Source Of Water Supporting Early Lakes In The Xanthe Terra Region Of Mars, Noemi A. Ortega Dominguez

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Whether an ancient ocean existed on Mars remains controversial. Modeling of Mars’ early climate indicates a dry and cold environment; meanwhile geologic evidence supports a wet and warm environment that potentially hosted a globally connected aquifer with a northern ocean. One geomorphic line of evidence in support of persistent standing water and a northern ocean are inferred deltaic deposits along and near the Mars dichotomy boundary. However, not all these deltaic deposits appear to have consistent delta front elevations, and many are within craters, calling into question whether these deposits formed within the same body of water or even at …

Development Of Novel Nucleophile-Intercepted Beckmann Fragmentations And Progress Toward The Total Synthesis Of 2(S)-Cathafoline, Evan M. Dunkley Dec 2022

Development Of Novel Nucleophile-Intercepted Beckmann Fragmentations And Progress Toward The Total Synthesis Of 2(S)-Cathafoline, Evan M. Dunkley

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis is comprised of two chapters, the first being the discovery of a novel nucleophile-intercepted Beckmann fragmentation of [2.2.1] indoline systems that resulted in highly stereo- and regioselective reactions. Chapter one details the exploration of this reaction as well as its relevant background information detailing its significance. Chapter two describes the application of the novel nucleophile-intercepted Beckmann fragmentation in the context of a total synthesis of akuammilline alkaloid 2(S)-cathafoline. While the target natural product was never synthesized, unpredicted reactivity resulted in interesting discoveries worthy of discussion.

The Impact Of Contact Geometry On Sea Ice Stress And Fracture At The Scale Of Ice Floes, Michael J. May Nov 2022

The Impact Of Contact Geometry On Sea Ice Stress And Fracture At The Scale Of Ice Floes, Michael J. May

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Observations of stress and strain at the scale of ice floes are necessary to fill a gap in our understanding of sea ice mechanical behavior. Current climate and ice dynamics models represent ice mechanical properties using stress-strain relationships largely determined at laboratory-scale (<1m) or from regional-scale (10+km) deformation observations. The former scale does not include all mechanisms of deformation operating in the ice pack; the latter aggregates multiple modes of deformation into non-physical fluid analogies. The Sea Ice Dynamics Experiment (SIDEx) was run in Feb-Mar 2021 to fill this gap, observing stress and strain at the scale of sea ice failure processes. Here we present stress sensor observations. Stress gages (N=31) were deployed over a 4.5km2 area in the southern Beaufort Sea to observe in-situ stress. These data were analyzed in the context of deformation observations from satellite imagery and local laser and radar interferometers to explain the drivers of sea ice stress variations before and after fracture. Three case studies between 14 March and 24 March, during which fractures propagated through …

Geomorphic And Paleoclimatic Implications Of Glacial Extent Records In The Sierra Nevada Del Cocuy, Colombia During Termination 1, Jordan Nickerson Herbert Sep 2022

Geomorphic And Paleoclimatic Implications Of Glacial Extent Records In The Sierra Nevada Del Cocuy, Colombia During Termination 1, Jordan Nickerson Herbert

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Reconstructions of past glacial extents using geomorphic mapping and cosmogenic dating provide an opportunity to infer past climates. A record of the past extents of tropical mountain glaciers is particularly useful because there are few other means to reconstruct past temperatures in high-altitude, low-latitude locations. The tropics play an outsized role in mediating global climate, yet there is a lack of understanding of how the tropics may have influenced past climate changes such as the most recent deglaciation (Termination 1, ~18–11.7 ka). Improving reconstructions of tropical mountain glaciers will aid in understanding the role of the tropics in the global …

A Bidirectional Formulation For Walk On Spheres, Yang Qi Jun 2022

A Bidirectional Formulation For Walk On Spheres, Yang Qi

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Poisson’s equations and Laplace’s equations are important linear partial differential equations (PDEs)
widely used in many applications. Conventional methods for solving PDEs numerically often need to
discretize the space first, making them less efficient for complex shapes. The random walk on spheres
method (WoS) is a grid-free Monte-Carlo method for solving PDEs that does not need to discrete the
space. We draw analogies between WoS and classical rendering algorithms, and find that the WoS
algorithm is conceptually identical to forward path tracing.
We show that solving the Poisson’s equation is equivalent to solving the Green’s function for every
pair of …

Automated Filament Inking For Multi-Color Fff 3d Printing, Eammon Littler May 2022

Automated Filament Inking For Multi-Color Fff 3d Printing, Eammon Littler

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We propose a novel system for low-cost multi-color Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, allowing for the creation of customizable colored filament using a pre-processing approach. We developed an open-source device to automatically ink filament using permanent markers. Our device can be built using 3D printed parts and off-the-shelf electronics. An accompanying web-based interface allows users to view GCODE toolpaths for a multi-color print and quickly generate filament color profiles. Taking a pre-processing approach makes this system compatible with the majority of desktop 3D printers on the market, as the processed filament behaves no differently from conventional filaments. Furthermore, inked …

A Machine-Verified Proof Of Linearizability For A Queue Algorithm, Ugur Yavuz May 2022

A Machine-Verified Proof Of Linearizability For A Queue Algorithm, Ugur Yavuz

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Proofs of linearizability are typically intricate and lengthy, and readers may find it difficult to verify their correctness. We present a unique technique for producing proofs of linearizability that are fully verifiable by a mechanical proof system, thereby eliminating the need for any manual verification. Specifically, we reduce the burden of proving linearizable object implementations correct to the proof of a particular invariant whose correctness can be shown inductively. Noting that the latter is a task that many proof systems (such as the TLA+ Proof System we chose to work with) are well-suited to handle, this technique allows us to …

Temporally Sliced Photon Primitives For Volumetric Time-Of-Flight Rendering, Yang Liu Jan 2022

Temporally Sliced Photon Primitives For Volumetric Time-Of-Flight Rendering, Yang Liu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Traditional steady-state rendering assumes that the light transport has already reached equilibrium. In contrast, time-of-flight rendering removes this assumption and recovers the pattern of light at extremely high temporal resolutions. This novel rendering modality not only provides a way to visualize the propagation of light, but can also empower the advances in time-of-flight imaging and its corresponding applications.

Building on previous work in steady-state volumetric rendering, this thesis introduces a novel framework for deriving new Monte Carlo estimators for solving the time-of-flight rendering problem in participating media. Conceptually, our method starts with any steady-state photon primitive, like a photon plane …

Line Sampling In Participating Media, Hsu Cheng Jun 2021

Line Sampling In Participating Media, Hsu Cheng

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Participating media, such as fog, fire, dust, and smoke, surrounds us in our daily life. Rendering participating media efficiently has always been a challenging task in physically based rendering. Line sampling has been derived to be an alternative method in direct lighting recently. Since line sampling takes visibility into account, it could reduce variance in the same render time compared to point sampling. We leverage the benefits of line sampling in the context of evaluating direct lighting in participating media. We express the direct lighting as a three-dimensional integral and perform line sampling in any one of them. We show …

Learning And Simulation Algorithms For Constraint Physical Systems, Shuqi Yang Apr 2021

Learning And Simulation Algorithms For Constraint Physical Systems, Shuqi Yang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis explores two computational approaches to learn and simulate complex physical systems exhibiting constraint characteristics. The target applications encompass both solids and fluids. On the solid side, we proposed a new family of data-driven simulators to predict the behaviors of an unknown physical system by learning its underpinning constraints. We devised a neural projection operator facilitated by an embedded recursive neural network to interactively enforce the learned underpinning constraints and to predict its various physical behaviors. Our method can automatically uncover a broad range of constraints from observation point data, such as length, angle, bending, collision, boundary effects, and …

A Multi-Resolution Graph Convolution Network For Contiguous Epitope Prediction, Lisa Oh Jan 2021

A Multi-Resolution Graph Convolution Network For Contiguous Epitope Prediction, Lisa Oh

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Computational methods for predicting binding interfaces between antigens and antibodies (epitopes and paratopes) are faster and cheaper than traditional experimental structure determination methods. A sufficiently reliable computational predictor that could scale to large sets of available antibody sequence data could thus inform and expedite many biomedical pursuits, such as better understanding immune responses to vaccination and natural infection and developing better drugs and vaccines. However, current state-of-the-art predictors produce discontiguous predictions, e.g., predicting the epitope in many different spots on an antigen, even though in reality they typically comprise a single localized region. We seek to produce contiguous predicted epitopes, …

Afterimage: Collecting And Replaying Geospatial Memory, Hyun Ji Seong May 2018

Afterimage: Collecting And Replaying Geospatial Memory, Hyun Ji Seong

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

AfterImage is an interactive wall consisted of light detecting units controlled by microprocessors. Each light-sensing unit determines user proximity through the intensity of the shadow being cast, turning these shadows into bright snapshots portrayed through built-in LED lights. AfterImage extends the concept of memory to a space and location by imitating two unique characteristics of human memory: a lingering afterimage effect for intense stimuli, and a flashback of events that happened in the past. To create a more organic representation of flashbacks, a native data structure was explored. Through the collection and reproduction of geospatial memory, AfterImage attempts to change …

Customizing Indoor Wireless Coverage Via 3d-Fabricated Reflectors, Xi Xiong May 2018

Customizing Indoor Wireless Coverage Via 3d-Fabricated Reflectors, Xi Xiong

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Judicious control of indoor wireless coverage is crucial in built environments. It enhances signal reception, reduces harmful interference, and raises the barrier for malicious attackers. Existing methods are either costly, vulnerable to attacks, or hard to configure. We present a low-cost, secure, and easy-to-configure approach that uses an easily-accessible, 3D-fabricated reflector to customize wireless coverage. With input on coarse-grained environment setting and preferred coverage (e.g., areas with signals to be strengthened or weakened), the system computes an optimized reflector shape tailored to the given environment. The user simply 3D prints the reflector and places it around a Wi-Fi access point …

A Digital Practice Tool For Chemical Resonance, Kimball Jaclyn Sep 2017

A Digital Practice Tool For Chemical Resonance, Kimball Jaclyn

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Digital practice tools support online learning in math, language, computer science, and other subjects, but practice with problems whose answers are not well represented by text or quantities is underrepresented in the digital learning ecosystem beyond multiple-choice questions. This thesis project explored an alternative to multiple choice practice problems in organic chemistry that does not rely on a molecule drawing interface. This project included development and evaluation of a proof-of-concept digital practice tool for chemical resonance problems. Results of a utility study strongly suggest that the practice tool could fill a learning niche within organic chemistry practice as part of …
