(1) Background: Strategies aimed at managing freshwater eutrophication should be based on practices that consider cropland invertebrates, climatic change, and soil nutrient cycling. Specifically, detritivores play a crucial role in the biogeochemical processes of soil through their consumptive and burrowing activities. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of increasing detritivore abundance as a strategy for nutrient management under varied rainfall. (2) Methods: We manipulated soil macroinvertebrate abundance and rainfall amount in an agricultural mesocosms. We then measured the phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon levels within the soil, corn, invertebrates, and soil solution. (3) Results: Increasing detritivore abundance in our soil significantly increased …

“Where’S The I-O?” Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Talent Management Systems, Manuel F. Gonzalez, John F. Capman, Frederick L. Oswald, Evan R. Theys, David L. Tomczak

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have seen widespread adoption by organizations seeking to identify and hire high-quality job applicants. Yet the volume, variety, and velocity of professional involvement among I-O psychologists remains relatively limited when it comes to developing and evaluating AI/ML applications for talent assessment and selection. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical research that investigates the reliability, validity, and fairness of AI/ML tools in organizational contexts. To stimulate future involvement and research, we share our review and perspective on the current state of AI/ML in talent assessment as well as its benefits and potential pitfalls; …

A Three-Dimensional Rna Motif Mediates Directional Trafficking Of Potato Spindle Tuber Viroid From Epidermal To Palisade Mesophyll Cells In Nicotiana Benthamiana, Jian Wu, Neocles B. Leontis, Craig L. Zirbel, David M. Bisaro, Biao Ding

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is a circular non-coding RNA of 359 nucleotides that replicates and spreads systemically in host plants, thus all functions required to establish an infection are mediated by sequence and structural elements in the genome. The PSTVd secondary structure contains 26 Watson-Crick base-paired stems and 27 loops. Most of the loops are believed to form three-dimensional (3D) structural motifs through non-Watson-Crick base pairing, base stacking, and other local interactions. Homology-based prediction using the JAR3D online program revealed that loop 27 (nucleotides 177-182) most likely forms a 3D structure similar to the loop of a conserved hairpin …

Market Research On Student Concert Attendance At Bgsu's College Of Musical Arts, Mary Solomon May 2019

Market Research On Student Concert Attendance At Bgsu's College Of Musical Arts, Mary Solomon

Honors Projects

Bowling Green State University boasts a well established College of Musical Arts which holds concerts performed by esteemed faculty, prestigious guest artists, and students. The school hosts these events in Kobacker Hall and Bryan Recital Hall which can accommodate up to 800 and 250 audience members, respectively. However, performances in Kobacker hall only fill one- fourth of the 800 seats, on average. Why is this so? This project aims to investigate the factors that influence students’ decisions to attend concerts at the College of Musical Arts (CMA). By methodology of survey research and statistical analysis, this project will look into …

Black Swamp Pub And Bistro Analysis, Sara Aniol May 2019

Black Swamp Pub And Bistro Analysis, Sara Aniol

Honors Projects

The Black Swamp Pub and Bistro is a full-service restaurant located in the Union on the Bowling Green State University Campus. We mainly do sit-down service, but we also do take-out orders and have a full bar with draft beers as well as mixed drinks. Our menu tends to change a lot, with new additions as well as some of the items being deleted. My goal of this project is to try to give some insight on the patterns that are too big to see with day-to-day operations as well as give some recommendations for the future that is backed …

Examining The Relationship Between Pre-Collegiate Educational Experiences And Religious Affiliation, Erica Augustyniak May 2019

Examining The Relationship Between Pre-Collegiate Educational Experiences And Religious Affiliation, Erica Augustyniak

Honors Projects

This paper explores the relationship between the type of school students experienced before college and how that schooling affected the students’ religious affiliation. The specific types of schools examined are public and private schools with private schools being further divided into religious and non-religious private schools. I explore the differences in religious importance among several groups including students who attended Catholic schools and those who did not, students who attended religious schools for varying lengths of time (low, medium, high, and no involvement), and students who had a choice in the schools they attended and those who did not. I …

Red-Shifting Mutation Of Light-Driven Sodium-Pump Rhodopsin, Keiichi Inoue, María Del Carmen Marín, Sahoko Tomida, Ryoko Nakamura, Yuta Nakajima, Massimo Olivucci, Hideki Kandori Apr 2019

Red-Shifting Mutation Of Light-Driven Sodium-Pump Rhodopsin, Keiichi Inoue, María Del Carmen Marín, Sahoko Tomida, Ryoko Nakamura, Yuta Nakajima, Massimo Olivucci, Hideki Kandori

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Microbial rhodopsins are photoreceptive membrane proteins that transport various ions using light energy. While they are widely used in optogenetics to optically control neuronal activity, rhodopsins that function with longer-wavelength light are highly demanded because of their low phototoxicity and high tissue penetration. Here, we achieve a 40-nm red-shift in the absorption wavelength of a sodium-pump rhodopsin (KR2) by altering dipole moment of residues around the retinal chromophore (KR2 P219T/S254A) without impairing its ion-transport activity. Structural differences in the chromophore of the red-shifted protein from that of the wildtype are observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. QM/MM models generated with …

One of the desired outcomes of dam decommissioning and removal is the recovery of aquatic and riparian ecosystems. To investigate this common objective, we synthesized information from empirical studies and ecological theory into conceptual models that depict key physical and biological links driving ecological responses to removing dams. We define models for three distinct spatial domains: upstream of the former reservoir, within the reservoir, and downstream of the removed dam. Emerging from these models are response trajectories that clarify potential pathways of ecological transitions in each domain. We illustrate that the responses are controlled by multiple causal pathways and feedback …

Held in October 2018, The Big Data Meets Survey Science conference, also known as “Big- Surv18,” provided a first-of-its-kind opportunity for survey researchers, statisticians, computer scientists, and data scientists to convene under the same roof. At this conference, scientists from multiple disciplines were able to exchange ideas about their work might influence and enhance the work of others. This was a landmark event, especially for survey researchers and statisticians, whose industry has been buffeted of late by falling response rates and rising costs at the same time as a proliferation of new tools and techniques, coupled with increasing availability of …

Statistical Inference For The Transformed Rayleigh Lomax Distribution With Progressive Type-Ii Right Censorship, Amani Alghami, Wei Ning, Arjun K. Gupta Jan 2019

Statistical Inference For The Transformed Rayleigh Lomax Distribution With Progressive Type-Ii Right Censorship, Amani Alghami, Wei Ning, Arjun K. Gupta

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the transformed Rayleigh Lomax (Trans-RL) distribution which belongs to a certain family of two parameters lifetime distributions given by Wang et al (2010). Confidence intervals and inverse estimators of the Trans-RL parameters are derived in terms of order statistics. A simulation study is conducted to report the coverage probabilities, the average biases and the average relative mean square errors for the maximum likelihood, L-moments and inverse estimators. We compare the performance of these methods under different schemes of progressively Type-II right censoring. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the proposed methods.
