Demonstrating The Potential For Covert Policing In The Community: Five Stakeholder Scenarios, Roba Abbas, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael Dec 2010

Demonstrating The Potential For Covert Policing In The Community: Five Stakeholder Scenarios, Roba Abbas, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael

Professor Katina Michael

This paper presents the real possibility that commercial mobile tracking and monitoring solutions will become widely adopted for the practice of non traditional covert policing within a community setting, resulting in community members engaging in covert policing of family, friends, or acquaintances. This paper investigates five stakeholder relationships using scenarios to demonstrate the potential socio-ethical implications that tracking and monitoring people will have on society at large. The five stakeholder types explored in this paper include: (i) husband-wife (partner-partner), (ii) parent-child, (iii) employer-employee, (iv) friend-friend, and (v) stranger-stranger. Mobile technologies such as mobile camera phones, global positioning system data loggers, …

The Road From S. And Marper To The Prüm Treaty And The Implications On Human Rights, K. Michael Dec 2010

The Road From S. And Marper To The Prüm Treaty And The Implications On Human Rights, K. Michael

Professor Katina Michael

This chapter investigates the implications of the S. and Marper v United Kingdom ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which found that the UK Government’s current deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) retention policy breached Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) (Council of Europe 2008). The aim of this chapter is to look beyond the changes that have been instigated in Britain, since the landmark decision by the ECtHR was made, and toward the legal and human rights implications of the sharing of DNA data across the borders of European Union member states. Of significance here …

Pre-Eruption Pressure, Temperature And Volatile Content Of Rhyolite Magma From The 1650 Ad Eruption Of Kolumbo Submarine Volcano, Greece, K. Cantner, S. Carey, H. Sigurdsson, G. Vougioukalakis, P. Nomikou, C. Roman, K. Bell, M. Alexandri Dec 2010

Pre-Eruption Pressure, Temperature And Volatile Content Of Rhyolite Magma From The 1650 Ad Eruption Of Kolumbo Submarine Volcano, Greece, K. Cantner, S. Carey, H. Sigurdsson, G. Vougioukalakis, P. Nomikou, C. Roman, K. Bell, M. Alexandri

Christopher N. Roman

Biotite-bearing, crystal-poor rhyolite magma was the predominant magma type discharged during the 1650 AD explosive eruption of Kolumbo submarine volcano, Greece. The eruption produced thick sequences of pumice deposits (~100 m) in the upper crater walls of the volcano, but also led to the formation of extensive pumice rafts that were dispersed throughout the southern Aegean Sea, and subaerial tephra fallout as far east as Turkey. Preliminary estimates of pre-eruption volatile contents have been determined using the volatile-by-difference method on plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions and yield an average value of 6.0 wt.%. This corresponds to a pre-eruption storage pressure of 180 …

Mind Mapping As An Interactive Tool For Engaging Complex Geographical Issues, David Lloyd, William Boyd, Kristin Den Exter Dec 2010

Mind Mapping As An Interactive Tool For Engaging Complex Geographical Issues, David Lloyd, William Boyd, Kristin Den Exter

Dr Kristin den Exter

Students and communities engaging with complex geographical issues require tools to assist them structure and contextualise data. This paper examines the use of mind mapping as a tool in geographical education. Case studies are presented from a sample of undergraduate and cross-cultural educational settings demonstrating the use of mind mapping in communication, analysis and problem solving. In critiquing this educational tool, we conclude that mind mapping is particularly effective with communities whose cultures are strong on visual communication but weaker on written communication and in cross-cultural situations where use of written English would disadvantage learners.

First Year Investigation Of Gravity Waves And Temperature Variability Over The Andes., Jonathan Pugmire, Neal Criddle, Michael Taylor, Dominique Pautet, Yucheng Zhao Sep 2010

First Year Investigation Of Gravity Waves And Temperature Variability Over The Andes., Jonathan Pugmire, Neal Criddle, Michael Taylor, Dominique Pautet, Yucheng Zhao

Jonathan Pugmire

The Andes region is an excellent natural laboratory for investigating gravity wave influences on the Upper Mesospheric and Lower Thermospheric (MLT) dynamics: during the summer months the dominant gravity waves result from deep convection arising from severe thunderstorms over the continent to the east. In winter this convective activity is expected to be replaced by strong orographic forcing due to intense prevailing zonal winds blowing eastward from the Pacific Ocean and suddenly encountering the towering Andes mountain range (6000m). This creates large amplitude mountain waves that have been measured well into the stratosphere and most recently penetrate occasionally into the …

Seawater Inundation Of Fe-Rich Coastal Lowlands – Hydrogeochemical Coupling And Hysteresis At The Tidal Fringe, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene, Richard Bush, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan Sep 2010

Seawater Inundation Of Fe-Rich Coastal Lowlands – Hydrogeochemical Coupling And Hysteresis At The Tidal Fringe, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene, Richard Bush, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

Over 17 million ha of coastal lowlands contain acid sulfate soils (CASS). These soils are rich in meta-stable, redoxsensitive Fe (III)-minerals. Large areas of CASS are at risk of increased saline tidal inundation due to sea-level rise. Fieldbased CASS remediation trials reveal that tidal seawater inundation initiates radical changes in sediment hydrogeochemistry, stimulating Fe and SO4 reducing conditions, generating alkalinity and greatly decreasing the acidity hazard. However, these changes also have profound consequences for the fate, mobilisation, redistribution and transformation of Fe minerals and co-associated trace elements. Here, we examine the consequences for iron and arsenic by investigating the hydrology, …

Climate Change Impacts On Acid Sulfate Soil Landscapes, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Edward Burton, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene, Vanessa Wong, L Mosley Sep 2010

Climate Change Impacts On Acid Sulfate Soil Landscapes, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Edward Burton, Scott Johnston, Annabelle Keene, Vanessa Wong, L Mosley

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

The anticipated impacts of climate change are warmer conditions, an increasing proportion of rainfall to occur from heavy falls, increasing occurrence of drought in many regions, increasing frequency of intense tropical cyclones, rising sea levels and frequency of extreme high seas (e.g. storm surges). All of these predicted impacts have direct relevance to coastal acid sulfate soils landscapes, through either exacerbating sulfide oxidation by drought, re-instating reductive geochemical processes or changing the export and mobilisation of contaminants. The interaction of specific land management factors such as man-made drainage will also have a significant role in how the predicted impacts of …
