Nitrate Dynamics And Source Within Nested Watersheds Of An Agricultural Stream, Nebraska, Usa, Galen Richards
Nitrate Dynamics And Source Within Nested Watersheds Of An Agricultural Stream, Nebraska, Usa, Galen Richards
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nitrate concentrations have been increasing throughout the globe, primarily due to heightened agricultural activity. Nitrate concentrations in Bazile Creek, located in Northeastern Nebraska, have been steadily rising since the early 2000s. Groundwater nitrate concentrations within the Bazile Creek watershed are high (> 10 mg/L nitrate-N), and there is strong connectivity between groundwater and surface water systems. This study aimed to better understand temporal nitrate concentration variability within the watershed through sampling tributaries and the main channel during baseflow conditions. Nitrate source was also investigated though the use of dual δ15N and δ18O nitrate isotopes, with samples …
Modeling The Effects Of Hydrologic Service Payments On The Hydrology Of Tropical Montane Watersheds In Central Veracruz, Mexico., Sergio Miguel López Ramírez
Modeling The Effects Of Hydrologic Service Payments On The Hydrology Of Tropical Montane Watersheds In Central Veracruz, Mexico., Sergio Miguel López Ramírez
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
An analysis of the effects of the Land Use Land Cover (LULC) change and its impacts on the hydrological cycle of tropical montane catchments influenced by cloud forest (TMCF) is developed in Central Veracruz, Mexico. This work started with the analysis of data from monitored-micro-catchments with contrasting LULC. Later the suitability of an improved version of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool model for the Tropics (SWAT-T) was evaluated. Finally, potential future land use scenarios, including conservation targeting alternatives were evaluated using a calibrated Seasonal Water Yield model as part of the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs framework …
Evaluating E. Coli Particle Attachment And The Impact On Transport During High Flows, Louis Amegbletor
Evaluating E. Coli Particle Attachment And The Impact On Transport During High Flows, Louis Amegbletor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fecal indicator bacteria, including E. coli, are the leading cause of water quality impairments within assessed waters in the United States. The source of E. coli includes WWTP, leaking sewers, animal manure, wildlife, livestock, and stream bed sediment. Storm events contribute to bacteria loading within waters through wash-in of land sources of bacteria and resuspension of bacteria within sediments. Bacteria introduced into the water column are either attached to particles or are unattached (or free-living). The goal of this study was to examine the attachment of E. coli to different particle sizes, including their impact on contributing to water …
Stream Restoration Effects On Hydraulic Exchange, Storage And Alluvial Aquifer Discharge, Christine M. Brissette
Stream Restoration Effects On Hydraulic Exchange, Storage And Alluvial Aquifer Discharge, Christine M. Brissette
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Stream restoration is increasingly being considered as a climate change mitigation tool, altering the storage and exchange capacities of streams and their adjacent alluvial aquifers. While previous research has shown that added geomorphic complexity and increased width-to-depth ratios can enhance hydraulic exchange and alluvial aquifer storage, few studies have used field data to link these changes in form to baseflow generation. In this paper, we quantify the effect of stream restoration on nested scales of hydraulic exchange and temporal patterns of alluvial aquifer recharge and discharge. Our work compares a restored and degraded reach on Ninemile Creek, Montana following extensive …

High Capacity Wells And Baseflow Decline In The Wolf River Basin, Northeastern Wisconsin, Susan A. Borchardt
High Capacity Wells And Baseflow Decline In The Wolf River Basin, Northeastern Wisconsin, Susan A. Borchardt
Theses and Dissertations
The baseflow of the Wolf River (drainage area of 1 200 km2) in northeastern Wisconsin has declined by over 30% during the last thirty years, whereas climatic, land cover, and soil characteristics of the basin have remained unchanged. Because groundwater basins do not always coincide with surface water basins, estimating groundwater discharge to streams using variables only pertinent to the surface water basin can be ineffective. The purpose of this study is to explain the decline in the baseflow of the Wolf River by developing a multiple regression model. To take into account variables pertaining to the groundwater basin, withdrawal …
Predicting Baseflow Using Genetic Programing, Ali Meshgi, Petra Schmitter, Vladan Babovic, Ting Fong May Chui
Predicting Baseflow Using Genetic Programing, Ali Meshgi, Petra Schmitter, Vladan Babovic, Ting Fong May Chui
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Developing reliable methods to estimate baseflow has been a subject of research interest over the past decades due to its importance in catchment response and sustainable watershed management (e.g. ground water recharge vs. extraction). Limitations and complexities of existing methods have been addressed by a number of researchers. For instance, physically based numerical models are complex, requiring substantial computational time and data which may not be always available. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as Genetic Programming (GP) have been used widely to reduce the challenges associated with complex hydrological systems without losing the physical meanings. However, up to date, in …
