The Yorktown Public Beach is located on the south side of the York River at Yorktown, Virginia (Figure 1). It is approximately 1,200 feet in length. Historically, the beach was a product of erosion of nearby sandy upland banks and the littoral transport system. Over the years, the beaches along the waterfront began to narrow as the natural sediment supply was depleted by hardening of the updrift shorelines and were easily overwashed in storms and had continually eroded. The purpose of this report is to document the recent history of Colonial Beach’s Potomac River shoreline as well as assess the historical shoreline evolution and status of the beach zone. Review of previously-published literature, field survey data, aerial photos, and computer modeling were used to address the study objectives.

The City of Newport News has three public beaches within its limits: Huntington Park beach, Anderson Park beach, and King-Lincoln Park beach. Each beach and its associated park has undergone or is undergoing improvements. The purpose of this report is to assess the rates and patterns of beach change at these three public beaches. Field survey data, aerial photos, wave hindcasting data, and computer modelling were utilized for this report. The computer model used was RCPWAVE, a wave hydrodynamic model developed by the Corps of Engineers.

The Bank Erosion Study was designed to evaluate eroding fast land bank shorelines as contributors of sand, silt and clay and total nitrogen and total phosphorous introduced into the Chesapeake Bay estuarine system. In addition, the extent and effectiveness of erosion control measures were evaluated for selected shoreline reaches. Fastland banks are the uplands along the shorelines that are composed of semi-consolidated sediments. This study evaluates about 2000 miles of primary tidal shoreline in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay estuarine system for areas of fast land bank erosion. The Aqua-Po Public Beach report is the first in a series of reports on the public beaches in the Commonwealth of Virginia. There are 14 localities with public beaches totaling about 23 miles of shoreline. The public beach reports are an assessment of the history of each public beach and their current status in terms of loss of beach fill and maintenance needed. This is measured by the beach monitoring program sponsored by the Virginia Board on the Conservation and Development of Public Beaches.
