The Design And Analysis Of Drug Combination Experiments, Thomas J. Vidmar Dec 1986

The Design And Analysis Of Drug Combination Experiments, Thomas J. Vidmar

Dissertations

Past literature concerning drug combination studies is reviewed. This literature has both biological and statistical origins. The justification of the logit transformation for dichotomous responses in a linear models framework is made by observing its similarities to models proposed by others. Using the logistic linear model, optimal experimental designs are derived. Methods for obtaining parameter estimates are discussed as are diagnostic techniques for logistic regression. Two new robust techniques for logistic regression are proposed and compared to a robust technique suggested in the literature via Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, estimation of the median effective dose (ED50) and the resulting confidence …

The Effect Of Dietary Fat Level On Tumor Development And Immunity In Balb/C Mice Fed Casein Of Wheat Gluten As Protein And Challenged With Herpes Type 2-Transformed Cells, Helen Drakou Sep 1986

The Effect Of Dietary Fat Level On Tumor Development And Immunity In Balb/C Mice Fed Casein Of Wheat Gluten As Protein And Challenged With Herpes Type 2-Transformed Cells, Helen Drakou

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A high percentage of fat in the diet has been implicated through epidemiological studies in several human cancers. Studies in experimental animals have produced evidence that increasing the fat in the diet decreases the animal’s ability to restrict tumor development and growth. In previous work done in this laboratory with BALB/c mice injected with herpes simplex Type 2-transformed mouse cells (H238), the effects of a diet which greatly enhanced tumor growth was compared with one which restricted tumor growth. The latter, a low (5%) fat, low protein diet, in which the protein was casein, was also found to produce a …

Correlates Of Birth Weight And Gestation Age : Baseline Data For Health Education, Adanetch Kidanemariam Jun 1986

Correlates Of Birth Weight And Gestation Age : Baseline Data For Health Education, Adanetch Kidanemariam

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose. The study examined the correlation of maternal occupation, urinary tract infection, smoking, and working during pregnancy with infant birth weight and gestational age in order to generate baseline data for development of a health education intervention program protocol for pregnant women In the work place.

Primary Hypotheses. (1) The four maternal risk factors: (a) occupation during lifetime, (b) reported urinary tract infection, (c) cigarette smoking, (d) working, are individually and interactively correlated with infant birth weight and gestational age. (2) The effects of the interactive associations are greater on birth weight than gestational age.

Procedure. A sample of …

Amount Of Root Shortening Related To Type Of Fixed Appliance : A Comparison Of The 0.018" And 0.022" Bracket Slot, Thomas L. Thompson Jun 1986

Amount Of Root Shortening Related To Type Of Fixed Appliance : A Comparison Of The 0.018" And 0.022" Bracket Slot, Thomas L. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if a different incidence and severity of maxillary incisor apical root resorption occurs in cases treated with the 0.018 inch versus 0.022 inch slot in standard edgewise mechanics. A consecutively treated sample of 240 patients (98 boys and 142 girls), with a mean age of 13.4 years from the orthodontic clinic at Loma Linda University were studied. 120 of the cases were treated using 0.018" bracket slot with standard edgewise mechanics and 120 were treated using 0.022" non-torqued full banded standard edgewise mechanics. 60 of the cases in each of the above …

Computer Program Generation Of Extreme Value Distribution Data, Stephen (Wan-Tsing) Lei Jan 1986

Computer Program Generation Of Extreme Value Distribution Data, Stephen (Wan-Tsing) Lei

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The application of the Monte Carlo method on the estimation in Gumbel extreme value distribution was studied. The Gumbel extreme value distribution is used to estimate the flood flow of specific return period for the design of flood mitigation project. This paper is a programming effort (1) to estimate the parameters of Gumbel distribution using the observed data and (2) to provide a random variate generating subroutine to generate random samples and order statistics of a Gumbel distribution random variable. The mean squared error is used to measure the accuracy of the estimation method. Finally, an example of the use …

Estimation In Truncated Exponential Family Of Distributions, Laxman M. Hegde Jan 1986

Estimation In Truncated Exponential Family Of Distributions, Laxman M. Hegde

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Estimating the parameters of a truncated distribution is a well known problem in statistical inference. The non-existence of the maximum likelihood estimator (m.l.e.) with positive probability in certain truncated distributions is not well known. To mention a few results in the literature:

(i) Deemer and Votaw 1955 show that the maximum likelihood estimator does not exist in a truncated negative exponential distribution on 0,T , T > 0 known, whenever the sample mean x (GREATERTHEQ) T/2.

(ii) Broeder 1955 shows that the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter of a truncated gamma distribution, with the shape parameter being known, becomes …
