Influence Of Climatic Factors On Animal Production In The Humid Pampa Of Argentina, J D. Josifovich, E Frutos
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
For any' pasture grazing area it is important lo know the relationship among the climatic parameters, rainfall and temperature, with carrying capacity and minimal gains. The availability of pasture to adjust stocking rates and make provisions for hay or supplementary feed needed for periods of shortage can be estimated from these data. Seven years of monthly rainfall and medium average temperature; and 25 years of forage digestibility and average daily gains were related to cattle i: carrying capacity; Analysis was made using the stepwise regression method. Carrying capacity was evaluated considering animal units (AU) for a 400 kg head gaining …

Increasing The Forage Supply And Cattle Production Through A Three-Strata Forage System, K Lana, I M. Nitis, W Sukanten, S Putra, M Suarna
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
A three-strata forage system (TSFS) experiment has been can-ied out for 3 years to study the effect of first stratum (grass and ground legume), second stratum (shrub legume) and third stratum (fodder tree) in increasing forage supply and Bali cattle production in a dryland farming area in Bali. The completely randomised factorial design consisted of 2 farming systems (TSFS and traditional system 2) and 2 stocking rates (2 and 4 steers/ha) with 10 and 11 replications. The 0.2S ha TSFS plot was divided into a 0.16 ha core area for food crop, a 0.09 ha peripheral area for the pasture …

Land Use Transition In The Grazing Areas Of Narok District, Kenya, W N. Wamicha, V P. D'Costa
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
This work underscores the need for land use transitions in the Kilgoris and Lolgorien divisions of the Narok district, Because of the competition for grass between livestock and wildlife in addition to low technology used by the farmers, concentration of livestock in the area is very low (I SU/3 ha). Although the area is in agroclimatic zones (1-111), with high to medium potential for agricultural production, less than 40% is under cultivation. The main objective of this study was therefore to analyse the environmental and economic aspects of the potential agricultural production in the area. Animal production has en found …

Grassland Productivity In The Indian Himalaya And Performance Of Introduced Temperate Forage Species In Cold And Semi-Arid Environment, J R. Sharma, A N. Ghosh
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Grasslands in the Himalayan ranges, particularly in the middle altitudes, are over-exploited by both sedentary and nomadic flocks. No systematic studies have been made to assess the productivity and carrying capacity of these grasslands so that suitable improvement measures could be adopted. A study conducted in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh (HP) at 2092, 2400 and 2895 meters above mean sea level (amsl) and varying soil conditions, showed that protection alone increased dry matter production between 9 and 188% over a three year period and average production in the third year from lower to higher altitude grasslands was 101.1, …

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Forage production from years 4 to 6 of an agroforestry system at 400-600 trees per ha and pasture alone were compared for a temperate sub-humid environment. Forage production was best for lucerne pasture followed by phalaris/clover and cocksfoot/clover, and least for ryegrass/clover and the ryegrass only pastures. Total pasture production in the agroforest relative to the open pasture was from 10% more for phalaris to 20% less for lucerne. Sheep carrying capacity over all pastures was 14.6 sheep/ha in the open and 11.8 sheep/ha in the agroforest and varied by ±15% according to the pasture types.

Winter Herbage Mass Accumulation And Animals Grazing Days Of Set Stocking Or Cell Grazing Dairy X Beef Systems In Southwest England, M. J. Rivero, Sarah Morgan, Maite Fajardo, G. Irisarri, P. Chilibroste
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Cell grazing (CG) has shown to increase the production per hectare by allowing higher stocking rates, greater grass production and higher herbage utilisation throughout the grazing season compared to set stocking (SS). Our objective was to compare the herbage growth rate during winter resting (WHGR, October/November to April) and the animals grazing days per ha (AGD-ha) of CG and SS systems grazed by dairy x beef steers. Three 1.75ha (1.5ha in 2018) plots and three 1.0ha were used for the SS and CG, respectively. Forty-two and 48 autumn born dairy x beef steer calves were split into six equal groups …

Stocking Rates And Carrying Capacity Of Grazing Lands In Bale Mountain National Park And Adjacent Areas, Southeast Ethiopia, Mohammed Abdulahi, Habtamu Teka, Hadis Tadele
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Knowledge of grazing land carrying capacity and grazing pressure in and around protected areas is very crucial to support decision making over sustainable grazing levels and developing grazing pressure reduction strategies. However, there was lack of studies conducted on livestock carrying capacity and grazing pressure in the connected and dynamic system over a wider landscape scale. Hence, this study was conducted to estimate the livestock stocking rates and carrying capacity of grazing lands in Bale Mountain National Park (BMNP) and adjacent districts grazing lands, southeast Ethiopia. Three categories of data: Field surveys, satellite imagery, and socioeconomic secondary data were used. …

An Investigation On Food Habits Of Persian Gazelle In Cheshmeh Gol Reproduction Station Of Khorasan Province, Iran, I. Mohammdi-Abiz, Kamal Naseri, Mansour Mesdaghi, H. Yazdandad
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Persian gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) is one of the most important wild species in Iran. This species prefers plain and low hill habitats which are dominated by sagebrush (Artemisia sieberi). However, due to extensive hunting and habitat destruction, the populations of gazelle were declined and this valuable species was recorded as threatened species in 2006. To rehabilitate the habitats of gazelle and improve their productivity, Cheshmeh-Gol captive reproduction station with an area of 50 hectares was established. To provide more reliable information on diet requirements of gazelle, direct observation and cafeteria feeding on captive animals were employed. …
Weed Management Affects Pasture Productivity And Livestock Performance - Tropical Perspective, Joao B. Cason, B. Sleugh
Weed Management Affects Pasture Productivity And Livestock Performance - Tropical Perspective, Joao B. Cason, B. Sleugh
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Weed competition in pastures has a great impact on livestock productivity, as, in addition to competing with forage, it interferes with animal grazing. Without question, weeds can compete with forage for water, space, light and nutrients. Weeds reduce the feed value of forage, decrease pasture carrying capacity, and can be toxic or unpalatable to livestock. For most weeds in pasture, the root system is robust, which contributes to the survival of these plants, affecting the development of the pasture. Due to the large number of seeds, they usually produce, they are very easily dispersed. In addition, when there are weeds …

Development Of A Grazing Land Management Education Program For Northern Australia’S Grasslands And Grassy Woodlands, Chris R. Chilcott, M. F. Quirk, C. J. Paton, B. S. Nelson, T. Oxley
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Recognition of the potential to enhance grazing land management to meet the goal of sustainable beef production has been increasing over the past decade. Recognition of the relationship between poor land management and negative off-site environmental impacts, such as soil erosion and a decline in the condition of rivers and adjacent near shore coastal areas from sediment transport, has increased also. This concern has matured somewhat to include the critical link between land condition and production, and the threat to sustainable carrying capacity that comes from declining land condition. Concurrently, interest has increased in optimising the use of pasture, e.g. …
The Seasonal Dry Matter Production And Carrying Capacity Of Kikuyu Oversown With Ryegrass And Clover, Philip R. Botha, Robin Meeske, Hennie A. Snyman
The Seasonal Dry Matter Production And Carrying Capacity Of Kikuyu Oversown With Ryegrass And Clover, Philip R. Botha, Robin Meeske, Hennie A. Snyman
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In the main milk producing areas of the Southern Cape, kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is considered an important summer and autumn pasture which is climatologically well adapted. The main problem experienced with kikuyu is that winter and spring production is low and the exclusion of legumes make it dependent of nitrogen fertiliser and that increases the input cost. The aim of the study was to quantify the seasonal dry matter (DM) yield and carrying capacity of kikuyu (K) through treatments involving kikuyu oversown with annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum spp.) (KR), kikuyu oversown with a mixture of perennial ryegrass …

Global Assessment Of Grassland Carrying Capacities And Relative Stocking Densities Of Livestock, J. Piipponen, M. Jalava, J. De Leeuw, A. Rizayeva, C. Godde, M. Herrero, M. Kummu
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Although many suggest that future diets should include more plant-based proteins, animal-sourced foods are unlikely to completely disappear from our diet. Grasslands yield a notable part of the world’s animal protein production, but thus far, there is no global insight into the relationship between current livestock stocking densities and the availability of grassland forage resources. This inhibits acting upon concerns over the negative effects of overgrazing in some areas and utilising the potential for increasing production in others. Previous research has examined the potential of sustainable grazing but lacks generic and observation-based methods needed to fully understand the opportunities and …

Evaluation Of Brachiaria Brizantha Ecotypes Under Grazing In Small Plots, Valéria P. B. Euclides, Cacilda B. Do Valle, Manuel C. M. Macedo, M. P. Oliveira
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
An intense search for new cultivars amongst recently collected and introduced ecotypes from Africa is in effect since 1988, at the National Beef Cattle Research Center, of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa Beef Cattle). After agronomic evaluations of a large collection, 21 ecotypes were pre-selected for multilocational trials and from these, eight were elected for evaluation under grazing. The objective of this trial was thus to evaluate the persistence and carrying capacity of these eight new Brachiaria brizantha ecotypes after two years of grazing. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with nine treatments and two replicates. The …

Herder Mental Stocking Rate In The Rangeland Regions Of Northern China, Yanting Yin, Xiangyang Hou, David L. Michalk, Xiangjun Yun, Yong Ding, Xiliang Li, Jizhou Ren
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In 2002, the Chinese government issued the “balancing animals and grass” policy to control the degradation problem of northern China, but these programs have been widely resisted by herders. We proposed that herder had their mental stocking rate, which refers to the number of animals that the herders think they can place or maintain on a piece of rangeland over a specified period of time. It is the mental stocking rate that guides herder on how to adjust livestock-breeding practices. This study surveyed herder opinion of grass-animal balance in the meadow steppe, typical steppe and desert steppe regions of northern …

How Many Persian Gazelle (Gazella Subgutturosa) Can Graze On Golestan National Park Of Iran?, Elham Bagherirad, Norhayati Ahmad, Mansour Mesdaghi, Masoume Amirkhani
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Golestan National Park, with an area of 98,000 hectares and diverse fauna and flora is one of the famous national parks in the Middle East. Carrying capacity was analysed based on available forage and dry matter demand of Persian gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) in spring and winter on steppe parts of Golestan National Park. The Persian gazelle is the most important ungulate species within the arid regions of Iran as well as other countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Western China (Farhadinia et al. 2009). This species currently categorized Vulnerable (VU) (IUCN Red List 2012). Although …

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Natural open pastures occupy approximately 80% of the land in Mongolia and have traditionally supported the pastoral livestock production system. After the collapse of socialism and the introduction of a market economy more than two decades ago, the total number of animals, including sheep, goats, cattle, horses, camels, as well as grazing pressure on pastures has increased (National Statistical Office of Mongolia, 2014). Despite this, the number sharply decreased twice during the cold seasons of 2000/2001 and 2010/2011 by a dzud. The dzud is the Mongolian name for an abnormal winter weather condition in northeast Asia, characterized by snowy and …

Effects Of Supplemental Feeding Using Different Nitrogen Sources On Body Weight Gain And Physiological Conditions On Grazing Castrated Lambs In The Steppe Zone Of Mongolia, Bayaraa Baasanjalbuu, Seishi Yamasaki, Gantumur Chuluunbat, Puruv Tsedevdorj
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The pastoral livestock production system in Mongolia has traditionally been operated in natural open pastures, which occupies approximately 80% area of the country. The productivity of the system is extremely seasonal, and the nutritional values of pasture plants such as crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) decrease until spring (Yamasaki et al., 2013), resulting in animals losing their live weight by spring. In recent years, the damage caused by disastrously snowy and cold conditions, termed dzud in Mongolian, has evidently worsened, thereby affecting farm management in the region. To overcome the dzud and establish a sustainable livestock production …

Effect Of Enclosure On Botanical Composition, Forage Biomass And Other Range Productivity Parameters In A Semi-Arid Area Of El-Khuwei Locality, North Kordofan State, Sudan, Mohammed Abdelkreim, Babo Fadlalla
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Animal production in North Kordofan State is mainly traditional depending on natural rangeland (Cook and Fadlalla 1987), (DHP, 1998). The State has an area of about 25 million ha of which 14.5 million ha is rangeland (Africover 2004). It is among the leading Sudanese States in animal and range resources. It contains more than 13 million heads of sheep, goats, camels and cattle (IFAD 2011). This paper deals with the effect of enclosure and stage of maturity on botanical composition, forage biomass production and other range productivity parameters in this semi-arid area.

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The Panicum maximum breeding program coordinated by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa has been evaluating and selecting genotypes under different soil and climatic conditions, with the objective to release new cultivars adapted to the diverse regions of Brazil. For the Amazon biome, small-plot experiments carried out in Acre between 2003 and 2005 allowed the selection of some promising genotypes (Valentim and Andrade 2005; Valentim et al. 2006; Andrade and Valentim 2009), with higher potential for forage growth than cultivars on the market. The objective of this work was to compare 2 new P. maximum genotypes with cv. …
