Electromagnetic Production Of Pion Pairs, Clayton D. Zerby Dec 1960

Electromagnetic Production Of Pion Pairs, Clayton D. Zerby

Doctoral Dissertations

The Pauli-Weisskopf theory of electromagnetic production of pion pairs has been a subject of interest in various connections for many years. Recently new interest has been stimulated in the theory because pion pair production is a possible means of investigating the - interaction. This approach, which was originally suggested by Pomeranchuk, is particularly valid in view of the increase in the cross section, when the strong pion-nucleus interaction is included, over that obtained by the original theory. The purpose of this work was to study the Pauli-Weiskopf theory with the objective of including the strong pion-nucleus interaction and developing an …

Muon Component Of Extensive Air Showers., Ryan Pierson Jr. Sep 1960

Muon Component Of Extensive Air Showers., Ryan Pierson Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to determine how the muon component of an extensive air shower varies with the energy of the incident primary particle and different values of inelasticity and multiplicity for the nuclear interactions according to a simple theory of extensive air showers suggested by Professor Roy Thomas of the University of New Mexico. The method of attacking this problem will be to calculate the number of muons resulting from decay of pions produced in each nuclear interaction of the primary particle and from this the total number of muons passing through certain levels of the earth’s …

Time Variations On The Cosmic-Ray Flux Near The Geomagnetic Equator, Charles L. Hyder Jun 1960

Time Variations On The Cosmic-Ray Flux Near The Geomagnetic Equator, Charles L. Hyder

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The search for an anisotrophy in the penetrating component of the cosmic-ray flux is usually carried out with narrow-angle directionally sensitive detectors located near the surface of the earth. Directional sensitivity is achieved by using a cosmic-ray telescope, consisting of Geiger counters or of scintillation counters, in a coincidence arrangement. Thus a solid angle of acceptance for the cosmic-ray particles is defined.

Measurements Of The Intensity Of Mu-Mesons In Cosmic Rays During A Period Of Unusual Solar Activity, Ronald A. Korsak Jun 1960

Measurements Of The Intensity Of Mu-Mesons In Cosmic Rays During A Period Of Unusual Solar Activity, Ronald A. Korsak

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Because of the incomplete understanding of the processes which cosmic rays undergo in the atmosphere, there is still no generally accepted treatment of the atmospheric dependent variations of the intensity or preferred method of establishing correct coefficients.

Three-Color Photometry Of The Zodiacal Light, Alan W. Peterson Jun 1960

Three-Color Photometry Of The Zodiacal Light, Alan W. Peterson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The major effort of the observational phase of this investigation was placed upon obtaining absolute intensity maps of the zodiacal light in three different colors. Emphasis was also placed upon measurements of polarization and upon photographing the spectrum of the zodiacal light.

Pseudoscalar Interaction In Nuclear Beta Decay, Chander Perkash Bhalla Jun 1960

Pseudoscalar Interaction In Nuclear Beta Decay, Chander Perkash Bhalla

Masters Theses

In Chapter I, the statement of the problem considered in this dissertation is given: the investigation of the existence of the pseudo scalar interaction by the formulation of the theoretical expressions for the beta longitudinal polarization and the beta spectrum in 0 --> 0 (yes) beta transitions and by a comparison of the existing experimental data with the developed theory.

In Chapter II, we explain the reasons for the incorrectness of the conventional treatment of the pseudoscalar interaction, and then give the correct form of the operator for this interaction.

In Chapter III, using the correct form of the pseudoscalar …

Core Location Of Extensive Air Showers, James H. Jett May 1960

Core Location Of Extensive Air Showers, James H. Jett

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Extensive air showers have been studied as part of cosmic ray phenomenology since 1938. They are made up of electrons, photons, and many other particles which traverse the earth's atmosphere toward the earth. The showers are initiated by high energy cosmic rays. The primary cosmic rays are nuclei which have been stripped of their orbital electrons.

To this end an experiment is underway in the University of New Mexico Physics Department to determine the amount of energy transferred from the core of the shower to the electron-photon cascade. By using a detector telescope with appropriate absorber between the two detectors, …

A Movement West, Robert Katz Jan 1960

A Movement West, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

I did not discover that I had any interest in teaching or in academic life until late in my twenties, and then only through a sequence of unrelated circumstances.
I was born in 1917. My parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who came to New York City at about the turn of the century.
At sixteen I enrolled in Brooklyn College, a recently organized, tuition-free, municipal college, then housed in rented office buildings in downtown Brooklyn. It took an hour to get to or from school on the subway. I managed to choose this inconvenient location because this school seemed most likely …
