Context In Computer Vision: A Taxonomy, Multi-Stage Integration, And A General Framework, Xuan Wang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Contextual information has been widely used in many computer vision tasks, such as object detection, video action detection, image classification, etc. Recognizing a single object or action out of context could be sometimes very challenging, and context information may help improve the understanding of a scene or an event greatly. However, existing approaches design specific contextual information mechanisms for different detection tasks.

In this research, we first present a comprehensive survey of context understanding in computer vision, with a taxonomy to describe context in different types and levels. Then we proposed MultiCLU, a new multi-stage context learning and utilization framework, …

Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey Jun 2022

Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis describes a variety of approaches to developing a computational model of narrative on social media. Our goal is to use such a narrative model to identify efforts to manipulate public opinion on social media platforms like Twitter. We present a model in which narratives in a collection of tweets are represented as a graph. Elements from each tweet that are relevant to potential narratives are made into nodes in the graph; for this thesis, we populate graph nodes with tweets’ authors, hashtags, named entities (people, locations, organizations, etc.,), and moral foundations (central moral values framing the discussion). Two …

Visualizing Features From Deep Neural Networks Trained On Alzheimer’S Disease And Few-Shot Learning Models For Alzheimer’S Disease, John Reeder Dec 2021

Visualizing Features From Deep Neural Networks Trained On Alzheimer’S Disease And Few-Shot Learning Models For Alzheimer’S Disease, John Reeder

All Theses

Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable neural disease, usually affecting the elderly. The afflicted suffer from cognitive impairments that get dramatically worse at each stage. Previous research on Alzheimer’s disease analysis in terms of classification leveraged statistical models such as support vector machines. However, statistical models such as support vector machines train the from numerical data instead of medical images. Today, convolutional neural networks (CNN) are widely considered as the one which can achieve the state-of-the- art image classification performance. However, due to their black box nature, there can be reluctance amongst medical professionals for their use. On the other hand, …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen May 2021

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Data reconstruction is significantly improved in terms of speed and accuracy by reliable data encoding fragment classification. To date, work on this problem has been successful with file structures of low entropy that contain sparse data, such as large tables or logs. Classifying compressed, encrypted, and random data that exhibit high entropy is an inherently difficult problem that requires more advanced classification approaches. We explore the ability of convolutional neural networks and word embeddings to classify deflate data encoding of high entropy file fragments after establishing ground truth using controlled datasets. Our model is designed to either successfully classify file …

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh May 2020

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Rapid growth in numbers of connected devices, including sensors, mobile, wearable, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices, is creating an explosion of data that are moving across the network. To carry out machine learning (ML), IoT data are typically transferred to the cloud or another centralized system for storage and processing; however, this causes latencies and increases network traffic. Edge computing has the potential to remedy those issues by moving computation closer to the network edge and data sources. On the other hand, edge computing is limited in terms of computational power and thus is not well suited for …

Ordinal Hyperplane Loss, Bob Vanderheyden Dec 2019

Ordinal Hyperplane Loss, Bob Vanderheyden

Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations

This research presents the development of a new framework for analyzing ordered class data, commonly called “ordinal class” data. The focus of the work is the development of classifiers (predictive models) that predict classes from available data. Ratings scales, medical classification scales, socio-economic scales, meaningful groupings of continuous data, facial emotional intensity and facial age estimation are examples of ordinal data for which data scientists may be asked to develop predictive classifiers. It is possible to treat ordinal classification like any other classification problem that has more than two classes. Specifying a model with this strategy does not fully utilize …

A New Method To Solve Same-Different Problems With Few-Shot Learning, Yuanyuan Han Dec 2019

A New Method To Solve Same-Different Problems With Few-Shot Learning, Yuanyuan Han

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Visual learning of highly abstract concepts is often simple for humans but very challenging for machines. Same-different (SD) problems are a visual reasoning task with highly abstract concepts. Previous work has shown that SD problems are difficult to solve with standard deep learning algorithms, especially in the few-shot case, despite the ability of such algorithms to learn abstract features. In this thesis, we propose a new method to solve SD problems with few training samples, in which same-different visual concepts can be recognized by examining similarities between Regions of Interest by using a same-different twins network. Our method achieves state-of-the-art …

Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams Apr 2018

Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams

Master's Theses

Facial recognition is a powerful tool for identifying people visually. Yet, when the end goal is more specific than merely identifying the person in a picture problems can arise. Speaker identification is one such task which expects more predictive power out of a facial recognition system than can be provided on its own. Speaker identification is the task of identifying who is speaking in video not simply who is present in the video. This extra requirement introduces numerous false positives into the facial recognition system largely due to one main scenario. The person speaking is not on camera. This paper …
