Monero: Powering Anonymous Digital Currency Transactions, Jake Braddy May 2024

Monero: Powering Anonymous Digital Currency Transactions, Jake Braddy

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Cryptocurrencies rely on a distributed public ledger (record of transactions) in order to perform their intended functions. However, the public’s ability to audit the network is both its greatest strength and greatest weakness: Anyone can see what address sent currency, and to whom the currency was sent. If cryptocurrency is ever going to take some of the responsibility of fiat currency, then there needs to be a certain level of confidentiality. Thus far, Monero has come out on top as the preferred currency for embodying the ideas of privacy and confidentiality. Through numerous cryptographic procedures, Monero is able to obfuscate …

An Analysis And Examination Of Consensus Attacks In Blockchain Networks, Thomas R. Clark May 2023

An Analysis And Examination Of Consensus Attacks In Blockchain Networks, Thomas R. Clark

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

This paper examines consensus attacks as they relate to blockchain networks. Consensus attacks are a significant threat to the security and integrity of blockchain networks, and understanding these attacks is crucial for developers and stakeholders. The primary contribution of the paper is to present blockchain and consensus attacks in a clear and accessible manner, with the aim of making these complex concepts easily understandable for a general audience. Using literature review, the paper identifies various methods to prevent consensus attacks, including multi-chain networks, proof-of-work consensus algorithms, and network auditing and monitoring. An analysis revealed that these methods for preventing consensus …

Spartan Price Oracle: A Schelling-Point Based Decentralized Pirce Oracle, Sihan He Jan 2023

Spartan Price Oracle: A Schelling-Point Based Decentralized Pirce Oracle, Sihan He

Master's Projects

Nakamoto’s Bitcoin is the first decentralized digital cash system that utilizes a blockchain to manage transactions in its peer-to-peer network. The newer generation of blockchain systems, including Ethereum, extend their capabilities to support deployment of smart contracts within their peer-to-peer networks. However, smart contracts cannot acquire data from sources outside the blockchain since the blockchain network is isolated from the outside world. To obtain data from external sources, smart contracts must rely on Oracles, which are agents that bring data from the outside world to a blockchain network. However, guaranteeing that the oracle’s off-chain nodes are trustworthy remains a challenge. …

High Performance Distributed File System Based On Blockchain, Ajinkya Rajguru Jan 2023

High Performance Distributed File System Based On Blockchain, Ajinkya Rajguru

Master's Projects

Distributed filesystem architectures use commodity hardware to store data on a large scale with maximum consistency and availability. Blockchain makes it possible to store information that can never be tampered with and incentivizes a traditional decentralized storage system. This project aimed to implement a decentralized filesystem that leverages the blockchain to keep a record of all the transactions on it. A conventional filesystem viz. GFS [1] or HDFS [2] uses designated servers owned by their organization to store the data and are governed by a master service. This project aimed at removing a single point of failure and makes use …

Proxy Re-Encryption In Blockchain-Based Application, Wangcheng Yuan Jan 2022

Proxy Re-Encryption In Blockchain-Based Application, Wangcheng Yuan

Master's Projects

Nowadays, blockchain-based technology has risen to a new dimension. With the advantage of the decentralized identity, data are transferred through decentralized and public ledgers. Those new contracts provide great visibility. However, there is still a need to keep some data private in many cases. Those private data should be encrypted while still benefiting from the decentralized on-chain protocol. Securing those private data in such a decentralized blockchain-based system is thus a critical problem. Our solution provides a decentralized protocol that lets users grant access to their private data with proxy re-encryption in SpartanGold (a blockchain-based cryptocurrency). We implement a third-party …

On Utilizing Prunable Blockchains For Secure Message Dissemination In Vanets, Edgar Bowlin Iii` May 2021

On Utilizing Prunable Blockchains For Secure Message Dissemination In Vanets, Edgar Bowlin Iii`

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Blockchain's use in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) research demonstrates that the technology provides useful attributes to allow for the safe and secure operation of VANET applications. The growth of blockchain applications pose a threat to the efficient operation of the MANET-like environment found within VANETs. Floating Genesis Blocks (FGB) can be used to preserve the state of the blockchain up to a certain point, and allows for the safe pruning of the chain without information loss. The early work presented here demonstrates two pruning techniques and compares the effects of each blockchain through simulation measurement of the chain's space requirements. …

The Adoption Of Cryptocurrency Technology Into The Us Banking Infrastructure, Trevor Melito Apr 2020

The Adoption Of Cryptocurrency Technology Into The Us Banking Infrastructure, Trevor Melito

Senior Theses

This thesis examines the possibility of using Blockchain technology to permanently change the payment structure of the US banking system. First, I examine the current technology that dominates the banking sector. I introduce the most frequently used payments methods including Automatic Clearing House transfers and wire transfers, both domestically and internationally. In addition, I highlight the major players controlling these transactions. Under the current system, frictions between senders and receivers cause billions of dollars in losses each year.

Next, I examine Blockchain’s roots along with some similar cryptocurrency technology, namely Distributed Ledger Technology and Smart Contracts. The transparency, security, and …

Software-Defined Infrastructure For Iot-Based Energy Systems, Stephen Lee Oct 2019

Software-Defined Infrastructure For Iot-Based Energy Systems, Stephen Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming an essential part of our everyday lives. These physical devices are connected to the internet and can measure or control the environment around us. Further, IoT devices are increasingly being used to monitor buildings, farms, health, and transportation. As these connected devices become more pervasive, these devices will generate vast amounts of data that can be used to gain insights and build intelligence into the system. At the same time, large-scale deployment of these devices will raise new challenges in efficiently managing and controlling them. In this thesis, I argue that the IoT …

Contract Builder Ethereum Application, Colin M. Fowler May 2019

Contract Builder Ethereum Application, Colin M. Fowler

Master's Projects

Developments in Blockchain, smart contract, and decentralized application (“dApps”) technology have enabled new types of software that can improve efficiency within law firms by increasing speed at which attorneys may draft and execute contracts. Smart contracts and dApps are self-executing software that reside on a blockchain. Custom smart contracts can be built in a modular manner in order to emulate contracts that are commonly generated and executed in law firms. Such contracts include those for the transfer of services, goods, and title. This article explores exactly how implementations of smart contracts for law firms may look.

Towards Secure And Fair Iiot-Enabled Supply Chain Management Via Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts, Amal Eid Alahmadi Jan 2019

Towards Secure And Fair Iiot-Enabled Supply Chain Management Via Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts, Amal Eid Alahmadi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Integrating the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into supply chain management enables flexible and efficient on-demand exchange of goods between merchants and suppliers. However, realizing a fair and transparent supply chain system remains a very challenging issue due to the lack of mutual trust among the suppliers and merchants. Furthermore, the current system often lacks the ability to transmit trade information to all participants in a timely manner, which is the most important element in supply chain management for the effective supply of goods between suppliers and the merchants. This thesis presents a blockchain-based supply chain management system in the …
