Synthesis And Characterization Of Colorimetric And Flurometric Chemosensor For Trivalent Metal Ions, Fazila Haque Dec 2023

Synthesis And Characterization Of Colorimetric And Flurometric Chemosensor For Trivalent Metal Ions, Fazila Haque

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

There are many biological and environmental uses for trivalent metals (like Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+) within our daily lives. Whether these trivalent metals are found in deficiency or excess can cause issues within our environment (global warming) or our bodies (can cause problems with our digestive, cardiovascular, and immune systems). Being able to detect them and understanding their importance becomes crucial in our understanding of the world that surrounds us.
One of the ways we can detect these trivalent metals is through the use of chemosensors. Chemosensors are used to sense analyte (trivalent metal) to produce a signal (fluorescence or …

Partial Coalescence Of Cdse/Cds Core/Shell Nanocrystals, Jordyn Wray May 2023

Partial Coalescence Of Cdse/Cds Core/Shell Nanocrystals, Jordyn Wray

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals that are a few nanometers in size that have different optical and electrical properties depending on size and shape. Some applications that quantum dots are used for, include, lasers, quantum computing, and solar cells. The goal of the research was to fuse cadmium selenide, cadmium sulfide (CdSe/CdS) core shells into dimers to increase the communication between particles in these applications. The CdSe were synthesized to 3 nm cores. Various procedures were used for CdSe/CdS synthesis, but the best performing sample contained 5 nm particles in diameter and a promising size for fusion. A metal salt …

Synthesis Of Phosphonate-Based Diimide Ligands, Kenya V. Medina, Adelani Pius Mar 2022

Synthesis Of Phosphonate-Based Diimide Ligands, Kenya V. Medina, Adelani Pius

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

There has been a resurged interest in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks because of their potential applications in energy production and drug delivery. Although diimides are insoluble in aqueous solutions, the addition of phosphonic acid allows the complex to be water soluble, which greatly increases their application. Therefore, the creation of a hybrid metal-organic complex by the addition of phosphonic groups to diimide ligands can result in a polar porous compound. In this project the ligand design included the use of dianhydrides including pyromellitic dianhydride, naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and biphenyl-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. These dianhydride precursors were refluxed under argon …
