An Integrated Resource Plan For Tucson Electric Power Company, 2020-2050, Timothy Gary Sheehan Jr, Danny Alexander Zepeda May 2023

An Integrated Resource Plan For Tucson Electric Power Company, 2020-2050, Timothy Gary Sheehan Jr, Danny Alexander Zepeda

Master's Projects and Capstones

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States electric power industry is responsible for 25% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, many utilities face state mandates which force electric utilities to reduce their emissions by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. An Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) is the primary method by which electric utilities plan all aspects of future electricity supply and demand, presenting how the company will deliver reliable and affordable energy while meeting statutory requirements. We propose three IRP scenarios through 2050 for Tucson Electric Power (TEP), an electric utility in southern Arizona. The first …

A One-Dimensional Analysis Of A Microbial Fuel Cell For Efficient Acetate Removal And Power Density Output, David Rouhani May 2023

A One-Dimensional Analysis Of A Microbial Fuel Cell For Efficient Acetate Removal And Power Density Output, David Rouhani

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are electrochemical devices that utilize microorganisms to convert organic matter into electrical energy. MFCs have been discussed to have potential application for sustainable wastewater treatment due to their ability to generate electricity while simultaneously treating contaminated water. To optimize MFC performance, numerical models can be used to understand the complex electrochemical and biological processes occurring in the system. In this study, a numerical model was developed to simulate the performance of MFCs under varying operating conditions and to investigate the performance of a MFC for treating wastewater fuel. More specifically, the MFC was modeled to oxidize …

Investigation Of Environmental-Friendly, Membraneless Hydrogen Peroxide Fuel Cells, Bao Nguyen Aug 2021

Investigation Of Environmental-Friendly, Membraneless Hydrogen Peroxide Fuel Cells, Bao Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses

Human-induced climate change is one of the biggest threats to humanity in the 21st century. This is caused by the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of climate change. This problem can be addressed by replacing fossil fuels with fuel sources that have clean by-products and are cost-effective. For the last few decades, hydrogen (H2) has been extensively studied as an alternative to carbon-based fossil fuels. Currently, H2 still has many shortcomings for commercial applications. The photocatalytic production of H2 still suffers from …

Development Of Integrated Tio₂ On Carburized Si Nanowires As A Catalyst/Support Structure For Alkaline Fuel Cells, Adam Lemke Jan 2016

Development Of Integrated Tio₂ On Carburized Si Nanowires As A Catalyst/Support Structure For Alkaline Fuel Cells, Adam Lemke

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Due to a combination of environmental and economic motivations, there is a strong impetus to transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable sources of energy. Critical to achieving this goal will be technologies that allow for the storage and transmission of energy derived from renewable sources. Hydrogen fuel cells may play a significant role in making this a reality, allowing for the use of hydrogen as a non-carbon based fuel, in particular for vehicle applications. Hydrogen fuel cells directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy, with only water vapor and heat as waste products.

An Applied Investigation Of Nafion Membranes In Pem Fuel Cells: Durability Issues, Amanda Rose Rodriguez Jan 2010

An Applied Investigation Of Nafion Membranes In Pem Fuel Cells: Durability Issues, Amanda Rose Rodriguez

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study was to perform ex-situ tests and observe the degradation behavior of PEM fuel cells in transportation applications. Improving the efficiency of fuel cells could lead to greatly reduced vehicle energy consumption and similarly reduced vehicle emissions.

Optimization Of Channel Geometry In A Proton Exchange Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell, Jephanya Kasukurthi Jan 2009

Optimization Of Channel Geometry In A Proton Exchange Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell, Jephanya Kasukurthi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Bipolar plates are the important components of the PEM fuel cell. The flow distribution inside the bipolar plate should be uniform. Non-uniform flow distribution inside the bipolar leads to poor performance of the fuel cell and wastage of expensive catalyst. A single channel PEM fuel cell is taken and electrochemical analysis is carried out on it. The results are compared with the available published experimental data obtained by other research group, and they are found to be in good agreement. A baseline design of the bipolar plate is taken and numerical analysis is carried out. The results show that the …
