Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Forcing On Marsh Channel Evolution, Jeremiah Robinson Jul 2018

Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Forcing On Marsh Channel Evolution, Jeremiah Robinson

LSU Master's Theses

Wetlands have many ecological and physical properties that are essential for coastal communities. These ecosystems sustain local economies, provide essential habitats, are a source of numerous ecological and biological services, and protect coastal populations from storms. Of the many wetland types, salt marshes are among the most vulnerable to environmental changes. Salt marshes quickly respond to natural and human-driven perturbations and their high rate of loss in the last century is cause for concern.

In this project the rate of marsh loss driven by channel widening was measured through a comparative analysis of modern high resolution images and historic aerial …

A Climatology Of Convective And Non-Convective High-Wind Events Across The Eastern United States During 1973-2015, Victoria Murley Jul 2018

A Climatology Of Convective And Non-Convective High-Wind Events Across The Eastern United States During 1973-2015, Victoria Murley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

High-wind events (HWE) occur across every region of the United States (U.S.) and result in hundreds of fatalities, as well as thousands of dollars in damages annually. HWEs are classified as sustained high-winds or high-wind gusts and can be generated from convective or non-convective weather systems. This study investigates high-wind observations across the eastern U.S. during a 43-year climatological period (1973-2015) for spatial and temporal variations in wind speed and direction. Hourly surface wind observations were gathered from the National Centers for Environmental Information Data Center Integrated Surface Database (NCEI-ISD). This dataset includes qualitycontrolled wind observations from 391 first-order weather …

Developing A Nearshore Geospatial Framework For Recovery Assessment And Planning, Jennifer Burke, Stacy Vynne Apr 2018

Developing A Nearshore Geospatial Framework For Recovery Assessment And Planning, Jennifer Burke, Stacy Vynne

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

As part of the Beach Strategies project developed by the Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program (ESRP), Puget Sound Partnership, ESRP, and Coastal Geologic Services (CGS) developed a geospatial framework to integrate nearshore data for analyses. The Beach Strategies project developed a geodatabase to inform restoration and protection planning. The Nearshore Geospatial Framework was designed as a companion structure to the Beach Strategies data to facilitate consistent and scalable units of analysis across the region-wide dataset. The framework is a series of consistent polygons with variable characteristics in both aquatic and inland areas of the nearshore. The polygon structures include variable …

Assessing The Impacts Of Toxic Mixtures Over A Broad Geographic Scale: Challenges And First Steps, David Hugh Baldwin, Julann A. Spromberg, Jessica I. Lundin, Cathy A. Laetz, Nathaniel L. Scholz Apr 2018

Assessing The Impacts Of Toxic Mixtures Over A Broad Geographic Scale: Challenges And First Steps, David Hugh Baldwin, Julann A. Spromberg, Jessica I. Lundin, Cathy A. Laetz, Nathaniel L. Scholz

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Assessing the risks posed by chemical mixtures is a complex process. Ideally, details are available on exposure (e.g. which chemicals and what concentrations) and effects (e.g. mechanisms of action and toxicity data). This can be challenging even for a single location and time such as a lab or field site. Ecological risk assessments often need to cover much larger scales such as an entire watershed or a wide-ranging species. This increase in scale substantially increases the complexity. Thousands of chemicals in use lead to potential environmental mixture exposures, including pesticide runoff and municipal wastewater discharges. At the landscape scale the …

Reconstructing Historical Hurricane Tracks In The Atlantic Basin: Three Case Studies From The 1840s, Emily L. Cerrito Mar 2018

Reconstructing Historical Hurricane Tracks In The Atlantic Basin: Three Case Studies From The 1840s, Emily L. Cerrito

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing past tropical cyclone activity enables researchers to recognize patterns of hurricane variability, estimate hurricane return periods, and assess local risk to future storms. This paleotempestology study used original primary data to make the historical record as comprehensive and accurate as possible for three major hurricanes: October 1844, October 1846, and September 1848. This thesis presents the reconstructed storm tracks, assesses the societal impacts, and evaluates the storm intensity of these three major hurricanes for the eastern U.S. and Cuba. The data utilized in this study include ship logbooks, newspapers, diaries, and instrumental meteorological records. A geographic information system (GIS) …
