On 18 September 1974, a cloud cluster growing in the GATE [Global Atmospheric Research Program] ship array was examined using aircraft flying close to one another at different heights, the geostationary satellite SMS-1, and radar, rawinsonde and ship data, with a view to elucidating mechanisms of convection. In this paper we concentrate analysis on cloudy convection in the moist layer.

In and above southerly surface monsoon flow approaching the cluster, clouds indigenous to the moist layer took the form of rows of tiny cumulus, and of arcs of cumulus mediocris, with patterns different from those of deeper clouds. From satellite …

The Origin Of Fine Scale Acoustic Stratigraphy In Deep-Sea Carbonates, Larry A. Mayer

In this paper we investigate the origin and geologic significance of the closely spaced high-frequency subbottom acoustic reflectors characteristic of pelagic carbonates. A detailed survey was conducted of a small area in the equatorial Pacific with the Marine Physical Laboratory's Deep-Tow instrument package, providing high-resolution 4-kHz profiles and precise positioning of core samples. The cores were sampled at closely spaced intervals for sound velocity and saturated bulk density. Acoustic impedances were calculated, and a reflection coefficient log determined for the upper 10 m of the sediment column. Hydrogeologic And Geochemical Investigation Of The Boone-St. Joe Limestone Aquifer In Benton County, Arkansas, Albert E. Ogden

The Boone-St. Joe limestone aquifer is an important unconfined aquifer for rural residents of Benton County, Arkansas. Pumping tests indicate a large range in production capability of the aquifer. The coefficient of transmissibility and specific capacity range from 24.8 to 24640 gpd/ft and 0.03 to 30 gpm/ft, respectively. No statistical relationship at a = 0.10 was found between each of these parameters and photo-lineament proximity. Drillers' estimated well yield (gpm) also showed no relationship to photo-lineament proximity. It is therefore concluded that choosing well sites along photo-lineaments for higher production is not as reliable for karstified carbonate aquifers such as …

An Investigation Of Surface Albedo Variations During The Recent Sahel Drought, Carl C. Norton, Frederick R. Mosher, Barry Hinton

Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) 3 green sensor data are used to measure surface reflectance variations in the Sahara/Sahel during the recent drought period 1967–74. The magnitude of the seasonal reflectance change is shown to be as much as 80% for years of normal precipitation and less than 50% for drought years. Year-to-year comparisons during both wet and dry seasons reveal the existence of a surface reflectance cycle coincident with the drought intensity. The relationship between the green reflectance and solar albedo is examined and estimated to be about 0.6 times the reflectance change observed by the green channel.

Applications Of Remote Sensing To Estuarine Management : Final Report And Annual Report Number 7, John C. Munday, Hayden H. Gordon

Remote sensing techniques have been applied to problems in estuarine management in the seventh and final year of a NASA grant. A chromaticity technique for multi-date Landsat measurement of suspended sediment has been verified and made operational, and applied to sedimentation analysis of the ·Bay of Fundy Tidal Power Project. Dye-buoy photogrannnetry has been used to measure currents at depth and analyze suspended sediment plumes from hydraulic · dredging. Wetland permit sites and beach erosion site's have been evaluated with aerial photography. Submerged aquatic vegetation has been mapped with tide- and wind-synchronized color photography. The purposes of the work-reported in this document are (a) to determine the magnitudes and patterns of water-depth changes in lower Chesapeake Bay within a control area centered on Thimble Shoal Channel; (b) to interpret these changes, insofar as possible, in terms of sediment movements and/or bed erosion and lateral shifting of large shoals and tidal current channels; and (c) to .deduce the relationship of these changes, insofar as possible, to changes in the Chesapeake Bay shoreline from Willoughby Spit to the area of Cape Henry. Water, Waste And Quality Management During Preparation And Processing Of Vegetables, W. A. Sistrunk

The research was designed to test and/or develop new systems of washing, peeling and blanching, develop methods of utilization of solid wastes, and find ways to reduce wastestrength of effluent without affecting quality of vegetables for processing. The highest wastestrength of effluent from vegetable processing in the region was found in plants that were canning Irish potatoes, dry beans and hominy. The high volumes of water used for washing spinach and leafy greens and the physical damage to the washed product is one of the major problems. Repetitive washing of spinach in the same water did not affect quality as …

Vims-Blm Second Order Wave Climate Model And Wave Climatology Of Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf Area, Victor Goldsmith

The Wave Climate Model of the Baltimore Canyon Trough Shelf area encompassing the designated lease blocks was extended, refined, and comparisons made with real wave data, as part of this year's contract (Figures 15-la and 15-lb). This modified model w.as produced to refine the 1975 model so that more definitive statements and interpretations could be concluded, based on more detailed data, in the evaluation of the baseline data. A set of computer-generated graphics utilizing a greater depth data point density (0.25 NM), to al.low site-specific evaluation of conditions within the lease block area, were produced.

The series of graphs and maps which follow illustrate agricultural land use changes in Nebraska from 1925 to 1974. With these graphs and maps, the major agronomic crops of corn (dryland and irrigated), wheat, sorghum and soybeans are analyzed. The purpose of this analysis is to provide a pictorial history of Nebraska's ever-changing cropping system and, hopefully, to stimulate ideas and discussion with regard to trends and future directions. The Nebraska Water Resources Center is deeply interested in both the past and the future of Nebraska's agriculture because of the demands which agriculture places on the state's water resources. Tornado watch and severe local storm outlook verification statistics reveal the trends in forecast skill at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. The skill level of the outlook has been steadily increasing since 1973. The percentage of watches verifying has been gradually increasing since 1970. While the probability of detection for tornadoes has decreased slightly since 1974, this appears to be highly correlated with the number of outbreak tornadoes reported in a given year. During significant tornado days, a much higher degree of skill is exhibited for both outlooks and watches. Factors influencing the results are discussed, including the impact …

Study Of Cumulative Growth-Inhibiting Factors In Recycled Water For Catfish Cultivation, R. W. Raible

Channel catfish were grown in tanks with integral biological filters and complete recirculation of water. After the fish had resided in the tanks for 120 days, solvent extraction was performed on a portion of the tank water. Fresh pond-raised specimen channel catfish showed decreases in their heartbeat rates of about 20 percent when exposed to the extract. This metabolic disturbance is thought to be a factor in reducing the growth rate of fish held in close confinement in recirculating systems.

The enclosed reports were compiled for the Colorado River Water Quality Office based on salinity data for Lake Mead and Lake Powell. According to the regional director of the office, the reports are not considered "polished" documents for public distribution. However, he considers them to be "interesting, rough appraisals of general trends that may be very important In our understanding the hydro-salinity system in the Colorado River."

(1) Yield assessments have continued similar to those used in 1977 and 1978. Essentially, plants with symptoms typical of BYDV are marked in the early spring as well as a similar number without symptoms. Yield differences were obtained both for Clipper Barley and an oats variety. (2) Two pilot experiments using viruliferous aphids were carried out at Mount Barker (79MT20) and at South Perth · (79PE13). Both Rhopalosiphum padi and R. maidis were used. Infection at Mt Barker failed, and therefore no data is presented. The Perth experiment was planted on August 31, 1979. The original plan was to have …
