Investigating The Effects Of A Southward Flow In The Southeastern Florida Shelf Using Robotic Instruments, Alfredo Quezada

We deployed a Slocum G3 glider fitted with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth sensor (CTD), optics sensor channels, and a propeller on the Southeastern Florida shelf. The ADCP and CTD provide continuous measurements of Northern and Eastern current velocity components, salinity, temperature, and density, throughout the water column in a high-current environment. The optics sensor channels are able to provide measurements of chlorophyll concentrations, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and backscatter particle counts. Additionally, for one of the glider deployments, we deployed a Wirewalker wave-powered profiling platform system also fitted with an ADCP and a CTD in …

During December 2017, a 2-week research cruise was conducted on the vessel the Sea Princess by scientists from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, North Carolina State University, Mawlamyine University, and University of Yangon. Kuehl et al. (2019) and Liu et al. (2020) present some of the sediment core, and seabed mapping data from that cruise. The cruise also provided a unique opportunity to obtain Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data along several transects from the Gulf of Martaban and adjacent continental shelf offshore of Myanmar. The objective of this component of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) Project MR-2409 was to conduct field measurements to aid in the determination of the electromagnetic induction (EMI) response to the water column and underlying sediments in the York River estuary, which includes water column and sediment properties similar to many underwater environments of interest to unexploded ordinance detection. Data and samples from a standard suite of hydrographic and sedimentological measurements, as well as electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, were collected and analyzed for each location. After budgeting for response efforts and natural processes, over one million barrels of oil from the BP oil spill were unaccounted for. A hypothesis coined "The Dirty Blizzard" formed subsequent to observations of large and numerous oiled marine snow aggregates amidst the surface slick proposed that a large quantity of oil sank to depth via the aggregates. Having reached the seafloor, aggregates were subject to microbial degradation and to redistribution due to bottom currents. To assist in characterizing redistribution of particles near the seafloor, sediment traps, marine snow cameras, and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were deployed at two sites …
