Tracking Xenophobic Terminology On Twitter Using Nlp, Harper Lyon Jun 2022

Tracking Xenophobic Terminology On Twitter Using Nlp, Harper Lyon

Honors Theses

Social media is a major driver of political thought, with platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok having a massive impact on how people think and vote. For this reason we should take seriously any large shifts in the language used to describe issues or groups on social media, as these are likely to either denote a change in political thought or even forecast the same. Of particular interest, given the international reach of social media, is the way that discussions around foreign relations and immigration play out. In the United States of America online spaces have become the default space …

Computational Investigations Into Astrochemical Inorganic Oxides, Ammonia Borane, And Genetic Algorithms, E. Michael Valencia May 2022

Computational Investigations Into Astrochemical Inorganic Oxides, Ammonia Borane, And Genetic Algorithms, E. Michael Valencia

Honors Theses

The formulations of quantum mechanics in the early 1900s were exciting theoretical discoveries, but were not practical to apply until the advent of computers and the subsequent computational methods in 1951. With the introduction of tractable simplifications, procedures such as Hartree-Fock allowed for determination of properties of non-trivial systems. Presently, huge leads of computational power have allowed for extremely precise, quantitative work that can be applied to the human body, synthesis, or even astrochemical processes. This thesis presents works concerning 1) the history of quantum mechanics; 2) a brief primer on computational chemistry and its methods; 3) inorganic oxides in …

Challenges Of Constructing Entrainment Map For Arbitrary Circadian Models, Yuxuan (Nelson) Wu Jan 2022

Challenges Of Constructing Entrainment Map For Arbitrary Circadian Models, Yuxuan (Nelson) Wu

Honors Theses

The entrainment map, developed by Dr.Diekman and Dr.Bose, is claimed to be a 1-dimensional map that produces a better prediction for phase-locking than methods than the phase response curve for circadian models. In his paper, he constructs the entrainment map for the two-dimensional circadian model, the Novak-Tyson model, and the other two higher-dimensional circadian models. For this thesis, we concentrate on exploring if it is viable to construct the entrainment map for other circadian models that are not included in his paper: the Becker-Weimann model and the Relogio model. In addition, we discuss the challenges of constructing the entrainment map …

Incorporating Demographic Structure And Variable Interaction Types Into Community Assembly Models, Akhil Reddy Alasandagutti, Nayan Chawla May 2021

Incorporating Demographic Structure And Variable Interaction Types Into Community Assembly Models, Akhil Reddy Alasandagutti, Nayan Chawla

Honors Theses

Theoretical studies of ecological food webs have allowed ecologists to remove the constraints of specific location and timescales from their study of ecological communities; food webs are generally complex and thus empirical study is difficult. Further, this theoretical approach allows ecologists to compare ecological processes and outcomes across any possible food web structures. However, these simulated communities are only as useful as the model from which they were constructed. Modifying existing considerations in these models, and generating new ones, are the jobs of theoretical ecologists that seek to achieve the shared goal of a majority of simulations: representation of real …

Applying Deep Learning For Cell Detection In Time-Lapse Microscopic Images, Jay Patel Aug 2020

Applying Deep Learning For Cell Detection In Time-Lapse Microscopic Images, Jay Patel

Honors Theses

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an effective model for studying cellular aging. We can measure the lifespan of yeast cells in two ways: replicative and chronological lifespans. Chronological focuses on the time that a cell can survive. The replicative lifespan (RLS) is the number of cell divisions that a single mother cell can go through before ceases to be dividing. RLS is a measurement of individual cells and is more informative on the aging process than in chronological lifespan. Many genes that influence yeast RLS have been shown to be highly conserved and have a similar effect on aging …

Using Genetic Algorithms To Evolve Artificial Neural Networks, William T. Kearney Jan 2016

Using Genetic Algorithms To Evolve Artificial Neural Networks, William T. Kearney

Honors Theses

This paper demonstrates that neuroevolution is an effective method to determine an optimal neural network topology. I provide an overview of the NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) algorithm, and describe how unique characteristics of this algorithm solve various problem inherent to neuroevolution (namely the competing conventions problem and the challenges associated with protecting topological innovation). Parallelization is shown to greatly speed up efficiency, further reinforcing neuroevolution as a potential alternative to traditional backpropagation. I also demonstrate that appropriate parameter selection is critical in order to efficiently converge to an optimal topology. Lastly, I produce an example solution to a medical …
