An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck May 2021

An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck

Honors Student Research

Certain congenital heart defects can lead to the development of only a single pumping chamber, or ventricle, in the heart instead of the usual two ventricles. Individuals with this defect undergo a corrective, three-part surgery, the third step of which is the Fontan procedure, but as the patients age, their cardiovascular health will likely deteriorate. Using computational fluid dynamics and differential equations, Fontan circulation can be modeled to investigate why the procedure fails and how Fontan failure can be maximally prevented. Borrowing from well-established literature on RC circuits, the differential equation models simulate systemic blood flow in a piecewise, switch-like …

Patient-Specific Multiscale Computational Fluid Dynamics Assessment Of Embolization Rates In The Hybrid Norwood: Effects Of Size And Placement Of The Reverse Blalock–Taussig Shunt, Ray Prather, John Seligson, Marcus Ni, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab, William Decampli May 2018

Patient-Specific Multiscale Computational Fluid Dynamics Assessment Of Embolization Rates In The Hybrid Norwood: Effects Of Size And Placement Of The Reverse Blalock–Taussig Shunt, Ray Prather, John Seligson, Marcus Ni, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab, William Decampli

Publications

The hybrid Norwood operation is performed to treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Distal arch obstruction may compromise flow to the brain. In a variant of this procedure, a synthetic graft (reverse Blalock–Taussig shunt) is placed between the pulmonary trunk and innominate artery to improve upper torso blood flow. Thrombi originating in the graft may embolize to the brain. In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics and particle tracking to investigate the patterns of particle embolization as a function of the anatomic position of the reverse Blalock–Taussig shunt. The degree of distal arch obstruction and position of particle origin influence …

Evaluation And Enhancement Of Clean Energy Systems: Analytical, Computational And Experimental Study Of Solar And Nuclear Cycles, Nima Fathi Jul 2017

Evaluation And Enhancement Of Clean Energy Systems: Analytical, Computational And Experimental Study Of Solar And Nuclear Cycles, Nima Fathi

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Clean (and specifically renewable) energy is steadily improving its global share. However, finite availability of fossil fuels and the growing effects of climate change make it an urgent priority to convince the industry and governments to incentivize investment in the renewable energy field and to make it more attractive by decreasing the capital cost. Until recently, uncertainties in funding limited renewable energy development, especially in the US. That limitation has been one of the barriers to progress. Another limitation of many renewable energy systems is the variability in their output, which makes them unsuitable for baseline power production. Therefore, fossil …

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers Jan 2017

Computational Fluid Dynamics In A Terminal Alveolated Bronchiole Duct With Expanding Walls: Proof-Of-Concept In Openfoam, Jeremy Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical Biology has found recent success applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model airflow in the human lung. Detailed modeling of flow patterns in the alveoli, where the oxygen-carbon dioxide gas exchange occurs, has provided data that is useful in treating illnesses and designing drug-delivery systems. Unfortunately, many CFD software packages have high licensing fees that are out of reach for independent researchers. This thesis uses three open-source software packages, Gmsh, OpenFOAM, and ParaView, to design a mesh, create a simulation, and visualize the results of an idealized terminal alveolar sac model. This model successfully demonstrates that OpenFOAM can be …

Cfd Model For Ventilation In Broiler Holding Sheds, Christian Heymsfield May 2016

Cfd Model For Ventilation In Broiler Holding Sheds, Christian Heymsfield

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Broiler production in Arkansas was valued at over $3.6 billion in 2013 (University of Arkansas Extension of Agriculture). Consequently, improvement in any phase of the production process can have significant economic impact and animal welfare implications. From the time poultry leave the farm and until they are slaughtered, they can be exposed to harsh environmental conditions, both in winter and in summer. After road transportation, birds are left to wait in holding sheds once they arrive at the processing plant, for periods of approximately 30 minutes to two hours. This project was interested in this holding shed waiting time during …
