Many of the world’s fisheries are threatened by over-exploitation or fish kills from run-off of industrial, agricultural and urban pollutants. The latter tends to be localised; however, over 50 years ago the explorer Thor Heyendall discovered the unexpected in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean in his ’Kon Tild’ expedition -- large globules of congealed pollutants. While the pollution of our rivers, seas and oceans has only taken on dramatic dimensions since the rapid industrialisation and human population growth of the twentieth century, over-fishing has known no boundaries for much longer.
