Seven remote sensing based Vegetation Indices (NDSVI, STVI-3, NDVI, Green + Red, Red, Land Monitor and STVI-1) were tested for their potential to discriminate between “poor” and “good” range condition assessments in Western Australia’s pastoral rangelands. Indices were computed using the Australian Greenhouse Office National Carbon Accounting System (AGO NCAS) repository of calibrated Landsat TM/ETM+ mosaics. Discrimination potential was assessed at two levels of stratification – station level (identical to the stratification used to collect the traverse data), and functional group level (an aggregation of similar land systems);

In December 2010 an extreme tropical storm resulted in widespread flooding at Carnarvon and across the catchment. Another two flood events followed during the summer of 2010–11

The rationale for this assessment is to provide illustrative evidence on the role that perennial vegetation groundcover management has in influencing the risk of flooding and soil loss in the catchment. It may be possible that the impact of flooding associated with extreme storm events can be reduced. This report focuses on catchment condition and is not a review of the pastoral industry’s economic viability.

This report summarises the outcomes of a project initiated to examine the potential to integrate high water use plant options into existing farm systems to combat rising watertables and reduce salinity and waterlogging. The research uses a new GIS based methodology for undertaking catchment scale land capability analyses.

This study focuses on the coastal plain region from Gingin to Augusta. This region accomodates over 80% of Western Australia's population and includes the States major urban centres. This region also accounts for over half the State's horticultural production with a gross value of production of $244 million.

Clearing in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia has been rapid and extensive. The mapping of remnant vegetation in the shires of Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Pingelly and Tammin with the use of the most recent aerial photography (1984) demonstrates the extent of clearing especially in the old established farming areas. Only 7 per cent of the Tammin shire had been retained under native vegetation, 10 per cent of the Dumbleyung shire and 14 per cent of the Pingelly shire. Ten land systems were identified, descriped and mapped. potential feed status was assessed for each land system. The land systems were then ranked accordingly and stocking rates allocated. Wongdong saline shrublands was considered to be the most productive system and Narryer hills, outcrops and breakaways the least productive.
