Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces Of Analytic Functions And Inverse Scattering, Daniel Alpay Oct 1985

Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces Of Analytic Functions And Inverse Scattering, Daniel Alpay

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of this thesis is to study certain reproducing kernel Krein spaces of analytic functions, the relationships between these spaces and an inverse scattering problem associated with matrix valued functions of bounded type, and an operator model.

Roughly speaking, these results correspond to a generalization of earlier investigations on the applications of de Branges' theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions to the inverse scattering problem for a matrix valued function of the Schur class.

The present work considers first a generalization of a portion of de Branges' theory to Krein spaces. We then formulate a general …

A Sensitivity Analysis Of The Coefficients For The Transformation Of The Electrocardiographic Orthogonal Three-Lead System (Frank) To The Standard Twelve-Lead System, Rasa Ona Draugelis Sep 1985

A Sensitivity Analysis Of The Coefficients For The Transformation Of The Electrocardiographic Orthogonal Three-Lead System (Frank) To The Standard Twelve-Lead System, Rasa Ona Draugelis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS is performed on the transformation coefficients of the Frank XYZ signals generating standard 12-lead ECG with respect to diagnosis. The analysis is adapted for the individual waveform and per each lead. The disease/abnormality categories are described in terms of discrete pattern classes based on criteria used by Marquette Electronics, Inc. The nonlinear global sensitivity analysis method developed by Shuler, et al, is selected for this project. The diagnostic change in the waveform is denoted by a distance measurement from the pattern class boundary corresponding to the best-experimental coefficient estimates (Dower coefficients) to the alternate coefficient specification measurement …

Certain Generalisations Of Acceptance Sampling Plans By Attributes., R. J. Pandey Dr. Aug 1985

Certain Generalisations Of Acceptance Sampling Plans By Attributes., R. J. Pandey Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The use of inspection gained importance when people started getting conscious of maintaining the quality of manufactured product. According to Anscombe (1958) inspection for quality in the form of acceptance sampling plans originated around 1920. The classical work of Dodge and Romig (1929) put acceptance sampling on a firm footing. In general, sampling inspection can be broadly classified into (i) lot- by-lot inspection (11) bulk sampling inspection and (iii) "continuous; sampling inspection. The lot-by-lot sampling inspection is applied where a series of lots or batches of discrete items are available for inspection. On the other hand, a batch of cotton, a …

On The Regularity Of The Critical Point Infinity Of Definitizable Operators, Branko Ćurgus Jul 1985

On The Regularity Of The Critical Point Infinity Of Definitizable Operators, Branko Ćurgus

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this note necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of the critical point infinity of a definitizable operator A are given. Using these criteria it is proved that the regularity of the critical point infinity is preserved under some additive perturbations as well as for some operators which are related to A. Applications to indefinite Sturm-Liouville problems are indicated.

Algebraic Grid Generation Using Tensor Product B-Splines, Bonita Valerie Saunders Jul 1985

Algebraic Grid Generation Using Tensor Product B-Splines, Bonita Valerie Saunders

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In general, finite difference methods are more successful if the accompanying grid has lines which are smooth and nearly orthogonal. This thesis discusses the development of an algorithm which produces such a grid when given the boundary description.

Topological considerations in structuring the grid generation mapping are discussed. In particular, this thesis examines the concept of the degree of a mapping and how it can be used to determine what requirements are necessary if a mapping is to produce a suitable grid.

The grid generation algorithm uses a mapping composed of bicubic B-splines. Boundary coefficients are chosen so that the …

Minimal Norm Constrained Interpolation, Larry Dean Irvine Jul 1985

Minimal Norm Constrained Interpolation, Larry Dean Irvine

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In computational fluid dynamics and in CAD/CAM a physical boundary, usually known only discreetly (say, from a set of measurements), must often be approximated. An acceptable approximation must, of course, preserve the salient features of the data (convexity, concavity, etc.) In this dissertation we compute a smooth interpolant which is locally convex where the data are locally convex and is locally concave where the data are locally concave.

Such an interpolant is found by posing and solving a minimization problem. The solution is a piecewise cubic polynomial. We actually solve this problem indirectly by using the Peano kernel theorem to …

On Universal Tests For The Truth Of World Views: Their Existence And Identifiability, William Buttelmann, Paul Fienberg May 1985

On Universal Tests For The Truth Of World Views: Their Existence And Identifiability, William Buttelmann, Paul Fienberg

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1985

In his book, Christian Apologetics, Norman Geisler proposes a universal test for the truth of world views. We examine this concept and find that it raises serious difficulties. This paper first presents some basic definitions for "world view" and "truth-value of a world view," then studies the concept of a universal test for the truth of world views in light of these definitions. Geisler has proposed what amounts to a universal decision procedure to determine the truth-value of world views. We show that, in the general case, no such universal decision procedure exists. Whether or not such universal tests for …

In this paper we show that specific classes of graphs are reconstructible; we explore the relationship between the reconstruction and edge-reconstruction conjectures; we prove that several classes of graphs are actually Harary to the reconstructible; and we give counterexamples reconstruction and edge-reconstruction conjectures for infinite graphs.

Brownian Motion Applied To Partial Differential Equations, Steven M. Mckay May 1985

Brownian Motion Applied To Partial Differential Equations, Steven M. Mckay

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This work is a study of the relationship between Brownian motion and elementary, linear partial differential equations. In the text, I have shown that Brownian motion is a Markov process, and that Brownian motion itself, and certain Stochastic processes involving Brownian motion are also martingales. In particular, Dynkin's formula for Brownian motion was shown. Using Dynkin's formula and Brownian motion, I then constructed solutions for the classical Dirichlet problem and the heat equation, given by Δu=0 and ut= 1/2Δu+g, respectively. I have shown that the bounded solution is unique if Brownian motion will always exit the domain of …

Non Relativistic Kapitza-Dirac Scattering, Evangelos A. Coutsias, J.K. Mciver May 1985

Non Relativistic Kapitza-Dirac Scattering, Evangelos A. Coutsias, J.K. Mciver

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

We use techniques of singular perturbation theory to investigate the scattering of nonrelativistic charged particles by a standing light wave (Kapitza-Dirac scattering). Unlike previous treatments, we give explicit results for the effects of the time-dependent part of the field. For low field intensity or low particle energy, we show that the leading-order effects can be found from an averaged equation, and we compute corrections. For the strong fields that can be produced by modern lasers and/or high particle energies, we show that the time dependence of the potential leads to focusing. Our methods can be applied to other problems with …

Some Spectral Properties Of Three And Four Body Scrodinger Operators By The Methods Of Time Dependent Scattering Theory., M. Krishna Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In the present work we shall deal with the asymptotic completeness problem in three and four (Quantum Mechanical) particle scattering. This thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter we give an introduction to Scattering Phencmenon and give a description of the N-particle completeness problem. Then we collect some results preliminary to the later chapters and some results that would complete a discussion of the problem. The second chapter consists of some technical results and a reduction of the asymptotic completeness problem in N-particlerscattering via time dependent methods. The last chapter has two sections. The first section deals with verifying …

Some Studies In Analysis And Recognition Of 2 Dimensional Shapes., Swapan Kumar Parui Dr. Feb 1985

Some Studies In Analysis And Recognition Of 2 Dimensional Shapes., Swapan Kumar Parui Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Analysis and recognition of 2-dimensional shapes constitute an important problem in the fields of Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis, Computer Vision, Robotics and other related areas of research. If we look at the problem from the point of view of image or scene analysis, in a sense, the antire subject of automatic scene analysis might be defined as the problem of describing and recognizing the shape of the ob jects in an image. Shape is the primal intrinsic property for the vision system because we associate the definitions of objects with shape, rather than with colour or reflectivity, for example.According to …

Ada: A New Programming Language., Daniel C. St. Clair Jan 1985

Ada: A New Programming Language., Daniel C. St. Clair

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In an attempt to control defense software costs while maintaining system reliability, the DOD (Department of Defense) has sponsored the development of a new programming language, called Ada. While Ada supports many of the features found in Fortran and Pascal, it has additional features making it easier and more reliable to use in large complex engineering software systems. Currently, the DOD is requiring that many new defense software systems be written in Ada. The author reviews the history of Ada's development and examines the primary constructs of the language. The philosophy behind Ada program design is reviewed by designing and …

On The Notion Of Precohomology, Goro Kato Jan 1985

On The Notion Of Precohomology, Goro Kato

Mathematics

ABSTRACT. For a cochain complex one can have the cohomology functor. In this paper we introduce the notion of precohomology for a cochain that is not a complex, i. e., dq+1 o dq may not be zero. Such a cochain, with objects and morphisms of an abelian category A, is called a cochain precomplex whose category is denoted by Pco (A). If a cochain precomplex is actually a cochain complex, then the notion of precohomology coincides with that of cohomology, i. e., precohomology is a gene¬ralization of cohomology. For a left exact functor F from an abelian category …

Asymptotic Functions As Kernels Of The Schwartz Distributions, Todor D. Todorov Jan 1985

Asymptotic Functions As Kernels Of The Schwartz Distributions, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

Using a version of the sequential method we introduce a class of generalized functions called here "asymptotic functions''. This class contains kernels of all Schwartz distributions and is equipped with a correctly defined multiplication operation. So, in a sense, one solves the problem of "multiplication of Schwartz distributions" although the solution refers to the class of the asymptotic functions and not to the Schwartz distributions themselves. The paper is a continuation of a series of works [1-10] but here only part of the results of [5], [6] and [8] will be needed.
