The Lowest Discriminant Ideal Of Cayley-Hamilton Hopf Algebras, Zhongkai Mi Apr 2024

The Lowest Discriminant Ideal Of Cayley-Hamilton Hopf Algebras, Zhongkai Mi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Discriminant ideals are defined for an algebra R with central subalgebra C and trace tr : R → C. They are indexed by positive integers and more general than discriminants. Usually R is required to be a finite module over C. Unlike the abundace of work on discriminants, there is hardly any literature on discriminant ideals. The levels of discriminant ideals relate to the sums of squares of dimensions of irreducible modules over maximal ideals of C containing these discriminant ideals. We study the lowest level when R is a Cayley-Hamilton Hopf algebra, i.e. C is also a Hopf subalgebra, …

Finite Monodromy And Artin Representations, Emma Lien Apr 2024

Finite Monodromy And Artin Representations, Emma Lien

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Artin representations, which are complex representations of finite Galois groups, appear in many contexts in number theory. The Langlands program predicts that Galois representations like these should arise from automorphic representations and many examples of this correspondence have been found such as in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. This dissertation aims to make an analysis of explicitly computable examples of Artin representations from both sides of this correspondence. On the automorphic side, certain weight 1 modular forms have been shown to be related to Artin representations and an explicit analysis of their Fourier coefficients allows us to identify the …

Reducibility Of Schrödinger Operators On Multilayer Graphs, Jorge Villalobos Alvarado Apr 2024

Reducibility Of Schrödinger Operators On Multilayer Graphs, Jorge Villalobos Alvarado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A local defect in an atomic structure can engender embedded eigenvalues when the associated Schrödinger operator is either block reducible or Fermi reducible, and having multilayer structures appears to be typically necessary for obtaining such types of reducibility. Discrete and quantum graph models are commonly used in this context as they often capture the relevant features of the physical system in consideration.

This dissertation lays out the framework for studying different types of multilayer discrete and quantum graphs that enjoy block or Fermi reducibility. Schrödinger operators with both electric and magnetic potentials are considered. We go on to construct a …

Subroups Of Coxeter Groups And Stallings Foldings, Jake A. Murphy Apr 2024

Subroups Of Coxeter Groups And Stallings Foldings, Jake A. Murphy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For each finitely generated subgroup of a Coxeter group, we define a cell complex called a completion. We show that these completions characterizes the index and normality of the subgroup. We construct a completion corresponding to the intersection of two subgroups and use this construction to characterize malnormality of subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups. Finally, we show that if a completion of a subgroup is finite, then the subgroup is quasiconvex. Using this, we show that certain reflection subgroups of a Coxeter are quasiconvex.

Analytic Wavefront Sets Of Spherical Distributions On The De Sitter Space, Iswarya Sitiraju Apr 2024

Analytic Wavefront Sets Of Spherical Distributions On The De Sitter Space, Iswarya Sitiraju

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we determine the wavefront set of certain eigendistributions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the de Sitter space. Let G′ = O1,n(R) be the Lorentz group, and let H′ = O1,n−1(R) ⊂ G′ be its subset. The de Sitter space dSn is a one-sheeted hyperboloid in R1,n isomorphic to G′/H′. A spherical distribution is an H′-invariant eigendistribution of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on dSn. The space of spherical distributions with eigenvalue λ, denoted by DλH'(dSn), has dimension 2. We construct a basis for the space of …

The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence For The Symplectic Group, Joseph Dorta Apr 2024

The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence For The Symplectic Group, Joseph Dorta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence (MGSC), as developed by Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche, stands as a significant extension of the early groundwork laid by Lusztig's Springer Correspondence in characteristic zero which provided crucial insights into the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Building upon Lusztig's work, a generalized version of the Springer Correspondence was later formulated to encompass broader contexts.

In the realm of modular representation theory, Juteau's efforts gave rise to the Modular Springer Correspondence, offering a framework to explore the interplay between algebraic geometry and representation theory in positive characteristic. Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche …

Some New Techniques And Their Applications In The Theory Of Distributions, Kevin Kellinsky-Gonzalez Jul 2023

Some New Techniques And Their Applications In The Theory Of Distributions, Kevin Kellinsky-Gonzalez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a compilation of three articles in the theory of distributions. Each essay focuses on a different technique or concept related to distributions.

The focus of the first essay is the concept of distributional point values. Distribu- tions are sometimes called generalized functions, as they share many similarities with ordi- nary functions, with some key differences. Distributional point values, among other things, demonstrate that distributions are even more akin to ordinary functions than one might think.

The second essay concentrates on two major topics in analysis, namely asymptotic expansions and the concept of moments. There are many variations …

Matroid Generalizations Of Some Graph Results, Cameron Crenshaw Apr 2023

Matroid Generalizations Of Some Graph Results, Cameron Crenshaw

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The edges of a graph have natural cyclic orderings. We investigate the matroids for which a similar cyclic ordering of the circuits is possible. A full characterization of the non-binary matroids with this property is given. Evidence of the difficulty of this problem for binary matroids is presented, along with a partial result for binary orderable matroids.

For a graph G, the ratio of |E(G)| to the minimum degree of G has a natural lower bound. For a matroid M that is representable over a finite field, we generalize this to a lower bound on …

Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson Apr 2023

Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We address the open question of which representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) can be realized by a modular category. In order to investigate this problem, we introduce the concept of a symmetrizable representation of SL(2,Z) and show that this property is necessary for the representation to be realized. We then prove that all congruence representations of SL(2,Z) are symmetrizable. The proof involves constructing a symmetric basis, which greatly aids in further calculation. We apply this result to the reconstruction of modular category data from representations, as well as to the classification of semiregular categories, which are defined via an …

Analytic Continuation Of Toeplitz Operators And Commuting Families Of C*-Algebras, Khalid Bdarneh Mar 2023

Analytic Continuation Of Toeplitz Operators And Commuting Families Of C*-Algebras, Khalid Bdarneh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we consider the Toeplitz operators on the weighted Bergman spaces and their analytic continuation. We proved the commutativity of the $C^*-$algebras generated by the analytic continuation of Toeplitz operators with special class of symbols that are invariant under suitable subgroups of $SU(n,1)$, and we showed that commutative $C^*-$algebras with symbols invariant under compact subgroups of $SU(n,1)$ are completely characterized in terms of restriction to multiplicity free representations. Moreover, we extended the restriction principal to the analytic continuation case for suitable maximal abelian subgroups of the universal covering group $\widetilde{SU(n,1)}$, and we obtained the generalized Segal-Bargmann transform, where …

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem Oct 2022

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of this dissertation is to show that the (multi-homogeneous) coordinate ring of a partial flag variety C[G/P_K^−] contains a cluster algebra for every semisimple complex algebraic group G. We use derivation properties and a canonical lifting map to prove that the cluster algebra structure A of the coordinate ring C[N_K] of a Schubert cell constructed by Goodearl and Yakimov can be lifted, in an explicit way, to a cluster structure \hat{A} living in the coordinate ring of the corresponding partial flag variety. Then we use a minimality condition to prove that the cluster algebra \hat{A} is equal …

Commutative C*-Algebras Generated By Toeplitz Operators On The Fock Space, Vishwa Nirmika Dewage Jul 2022

Commutative C*-Algebras Generated By Toeplitz Operators On The Fock Space, Vishwa Nirmika Dewage

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is the space of holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ that are square-integrable with respect to the Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{C}^n$. This space plays an essential role in several subfields of analysis and representation theory. In particular, it has for a long time been a model to study Toeplitz operators. Grudsky and Vasilevski showed in 2002 that radial Toeplitz operators on $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C})$ generate a commutative $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{T}^G$, while Esmeral and Maximenko showed that $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{T}^G$ is isometrically isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra $C_{b,u}(\mathbb{N}_0,\rho_1)$. In this thesis, we extend the result to $k$-quasi-radial symbols acting on the Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. …

On A Relation Between Ado And Links-Gould Invariants, Nurdin Takenov Jul 2022

On A Relation Between Ado And Links-Gould Invariants, Nurdin Takenov

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we consider two knot invariants: Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki(ADO) invariant and Links-Gould invariant. They both are based on Reshetikhin-Turaev construction and as such share a lot of similarities. Moreover, they are both related to the Alexander polynomial and may be considered generalizations of it. By experimentation we found that for many knots, the third order ADO invariant is a specialization of the Links-Gould invariant. The main result of the thesis is a proof of this relation for a large class of knots, specifically closures of braids with five strands.

Anticipating Stochastic Integrals And Related Linear Stochastic Differential Equations, Sudip Sinha Apr 2022

Anticipating Stochastic Integrals And Related Linear Stochastic Differential Equations, Sudip Sinha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Itô’s stochastic calculus revolutionized the field of stochastic analysis and has found numerous applications in a wide variety of disciplines. Itô’s theory, even though quite general, cannot handle anticipating stochastic processes as integrands. There have been considerable efforts within the mathematical community to extend Itô’s calculus to account for anticipation. The Ayed–Kuo integral — introduced in 2008 — is one of the most recent developments. It is arguably the most accessible among the theories extending Itô’s calculus — relying solely on probabilistic methods. In this dissertation, we look at the recent advances in this area, highlighting our contributions. First, we …

A New Perspective On A Polynomial Time Knot Polynomial, Robert John Quarles Apr 2022

A New Perspective On A Polynomial Time Knot Polynomial, Robert John Quarles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we consider the Z1(K) polynomial time knot polynomial defined and
described by Dror Bar-Natan and Roland van der Veen in their 2018 paper ”A polynomial time knot polynomial”. We first look at some of the basic properties of Z1(K), and develop an invariant of diagrams Ψm(D) related to this polynomial. We use this invariant as a model to prove how Z1(K) acts under the connected sum operation. We then discuss the effect of mirroring the knot on Z1(K), and described a geometric interpretation of some of the building blocks of the invariant. We then use these to …

General Stochastic Calculus And Applications, Pujan Shrestha Apr 2022

General Stochastic Calculus And Applications, Pujan Shrestha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In 1942, K. Itô published his pioneering paper on stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion. This work led to the framework for Itô calculus. Note that, Itô calculus is limited in working with knowledge from the future. There have been many generalizations of the stochastic integral in being able to do so. In 2008, W. Ayed and H.-H. Kuo introduced a new stochastic integral by splitting the integrand into the adaptive part and the counterpart called instantly independent. In this doctoral work, we conduct deeper research into the Ayed–Kuo stochastic integral and corresponding anticipating stochastic calculus.

We provide a …

Characterizations Of Certain Classes Of Graphs And Matroids, Jagdeep Singh Apr 2022

Characterizations Of Certain Classes Of Graphs And Matroids, Jagdeep Singh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

``If a theorem about graphs can be expressed in terms of edges and cycles only, it probably exemplifies a more general theorem about matroids." Most of my work draws inspiration from this assertion, made by Tutte in 1979.

In 2004, Ehrenfeucht, Harju and Rozenberg proved that all graphs can be constructed from complete graphs via a sequence of the operations of complementation, switching edges and non-edges at a vertex, and local complementation. In Chapter 2, we consider the binary matroid analogue of each of these graph operations. We prove that the analogue of the result of Ehrenfeucht et. al. does …

Unavoidable Structures In Large And Infinite Graphs, Sarah Allred Apr 2022

Unavoidable Structures In Large And Infinite Graphs, Sarah Allred

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we present results on the unavoidable structures in large connected and large 2-connected graphs. For the relation of induced subgraphs, Ramsey proved that for every positive integer r, every sufficiently large graph contains as an induced subgraph either Kr or Kr. It is well known that, for every positive integer r, every sufficiently large connected graph contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to one of Kr, K1,r, and Pr. We prove an analogous result for 2-connected graphs. Similarly, for infinite graphs, every infinite connected graph contains an induced subgraph …

Congruences Between Coefficients Of A Class Of Eta-Quotients And Their Applications To Combinatorics, Shashika Petta Mestrige Nov 2021

Congruences Between Coefficients Of A Class Of Eta-Quotients And Their Applications To Combinatorics, Shashika Petta Mestrige

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ramanujan in $1920$s discovered remarkable congruence properties of the partition function $p(n)$. Later, Watson and Atkin proved these congruences using the theory of modular forms. Atkin, Gordon, and Hughes extended these works to $k$-colored partition functions. In $2010$, Folsom-Kent-Ono and Boylan-Webb proved the congruences of $p(n)$ by studying a $\ell$-adic module associated with a certain sequence of modular functions which are related to $p(n)$.

Primary goal of this thesis is to generalize the work of Atkin, Gordon, Hughes, Folsom-Kent-Ono, and Boylan-Webb about the partition function to a larger class of partition functions. For this purpose we study a closely related …

Rigid Connections On The Projective Line With Elliptic Toral Singularities, Alisina Azhang Aug 2021

Rigid Connections On The Projective Line With Elliptic Toral Singularities, Alisina Azhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We generalize two studies of rigid $G$-connections on $\pp$ which have an irregular singularity at origin and a regular singularity at infinity with unipotent monodromy: one is the work of Kamgarpour-Sage which classifies rigid homogeneous Coxeter $G$-connections with slope $\frac{r}{h}$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $G$, and the other is the work of Chen, which proves the existence of rigid homogeneous elliptic regular $G$-connections with slope $\frac{1}{m}$, where $m$ is an elliptic number for $G$. In our work, similar to Chen, we look for rigid homogeneous elliptic regular $G$-connections, but we allow the slope to have a numerator …

Algorithms Related To Triangle Groups, Bao The Pham Jul 2021

Algorithms Related To Triangle Groups, Bao The Pham

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Given a finite index subgroup of $\PSL_2(\Z)$, one can talk about the different properties of this subgroup. These properties have been studied extensively in an attempt to classify these subgroups. Tim Hsu created an algorithm to determine whether a subgroup is a congruence subgroup by using permutations \cite{hsu}. Lang, Lim, and Tan also created an algorithm to determine if a subgroup is a congruence subgroup by using Farey Symbols \cite{llt}. Sebbar classified torsion-free congruence subgroups of genus 0 \cite{sebbar}. Pauli and Cummins computed and tabulated all congruence subgroups of genus less than 24 \cite{ps}. However, there are still some problems …

An Equivalence Between Contact Gluing Maps In Sutured Floer Homology: A Conjecture Of Zarev, Charles Ryan Leigon Jun 2021

An Equivalence Between Contact Gluing Maps In Sutured Floer Homology: A Conjecture Of Zarev, Charles Ryan Leigon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We show that the contact gluing map of Honda, Kazez, and Matic has a natural algebraic description in bordered sutured Floer homology. In particular, we establish Zarev's conjecture that his gluing map on sutured Floer homology is equivalent, in the appropriate sense, to the contact gluing map. This further solidifies the relationship between bordered Floer theory and contact geometry.

Noncommutative Tensor Triangular Geometry And Its Applications To Representation Theory, Kent Barton Vashaw Jun 2021

Noncommutative Tensor Triangular Geometry And Its Applications To Representation Theory, Kent Barton Vashaw

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the cornerstones of the representation theory of Hopf algebras and finite tensor categories is the theory of support varieties. Balmer introduced tensor triangular geometry for symmetric monoidal triangulated categories, which united various support variety theories coming from disparate areas such as homotopy theory, algebraic geometry, and representation theory. In this thesis a noncommutative version will be introduced and developed. We show that this noncommutative analogue of Balmer's theory can be determined in many concrete situations via the theory of abstract support data, and can be used to classify thick tensor ideals. We prove an analogue of prime ideal …

On Properties Of Weil Sums Of Binomials, Liem P. Nguyen May 2021

On Properties Of Weil Sums Of Binomials, Liem P. Nguyen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores questions regarding the Weil sum of binomials, a finite field character sum originated from information theory. The Weil spectrum counts distinct values of the Weil sum through invertible elements in the finite field. The value of these sums and the size of the Weil spectrum are of particular interest, as they link problems in information theory, coding theory, and cryptography to other areas of math such as number theory and arithmetic geometry. In the setting of Niho exponents, we prove the Vanishing Conjecture of Helleseth ($1971$) on the presence of zero values in the Weil spectrum and …

Applications Of Nonstandard Analysis In Probability And Measure Theory, Irfan Alam May 2021

Applications Of Nonstandard Analysis In Probability And Measure Theory, Irfan Alam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation broadly deals with two areas of probability theory and investigates how methods from nonstandard analysis may provide new perspectives in these topics. In particular, we use nonstandard analysis to prove new results in the topics of limiting spherical integrals and of exchangeability.

In the former area, our methods allow us to represent finite dimensional Gaussian measures in terms of marginals of measures on hyperfinite-dimensional spheres in a certain strong sense, thus generalizing some previously known results on Gaussian Radon transforms as limits of spherical integrals. This first area has roots in the kinetic theory of gases, which is …

Connectivity Of Matroids And Polymatroids, Zachary R. Gershkoff Mar 2021

Connectivity Of Matroids And Polymatroids, Zachary R. Gershkoff

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a collection of work on matroid and polymatroid connectivity. Connectivity is a useful property of matroids that allows a matroid to be decomposed naturally into its connected components, which are like blocks in a graph. The Cunningham-Edmonds tree decomposition further gives a way to decompose matroids into 3-connected minors. Much of the research below concerns alternate senses in which matroids and polymatroids can be connected. After a brief introduction to matroid theory in Chapter 1, the main results of this dissertation are given in Chapters 2 and 3. Tutte proved that, for an element e of a …

Knots And Links In Overtwisted Contact Manifolds, Rima Chatterjee Mar 2021

Knots And Links In Overtwisted Contact Manifolds, Rima Chatterjee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Suppose $(\M,\xi)$ be an overtwisted contact 3-manifold. We prove that any Legendrian and transverse link in $(\M,\xi)$ having overtwisted complement can be coarsely classified by their classical invariants. Next, we defined an invariant called the support genus for transverse links and extended the definition of support genus of Legendrian knots to Legendrian links and prove that any coarse equivalence class of Legendrian and transverse loose links has support genus zero. Further, we show that the converse is not true by explicitly constructing an example. We also find a relationship between the support genus of the transverse link and its Legendrian …

Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Markov Switching, Po-Han Hsu Mar 2021

Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations With Markov Switching, Po-Han Hsu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is devoted to the study of three-dimensional (regularized) stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with Markov switching. A Markov chain is introduced into the noise term to capture the transitions from laminar to turbulent flow, and vice versa. The existence of the weak solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis) is shown by studying the martingale problem posed by it. This together with the pathwise uniqueness yields existence of the unique strong solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis). The existence and uniqueness of a stationary measure is established when the noise terms are additive and autonomous. Certain exit time estimates …

Nonlinear Potential Analysis On Sobolev Multiplier Spaces, Keng Hao Ooi Mar 2021

Nonlinear Potential Analysis On Sobolev Multiplier Spaces, Keng Hao Ooi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We characterize preduals and Kothe duals to a class of Sobolev multiplier type spaces. Our results fit in well with the modern theory of function spaces of harmonic analysis and are also applicable to nonlinear partial differential equations. As a maneuver, we make use of several tools from nonlinear potential theory, weighted norm inequalities, and the theory of Banach function spaces to obtain our results. After characterizing the preduals, we establish a capacitary strong type inequality which resolves a special case of a conjecture by David R. Adams. As a consequence, we obtain several equivalent norms for Choquet integrals associated …

Towards A General Framework For Practical Quantum Network Protocols, Sumeet Khatri Mar 2021

Towards A General Framework For Practical Quantum Network Protocols, Sumeet Khatri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The quantum internet is one of the frontiers of quantum information science. It will revolutionize the way we communicate and do other tasks, and it will allow for tasks that are not possible using the current, classical internet. The backbone of a quantum internet is entanglement distributed globally in order to allow for such novel applications to be performed over long distances. Experimental progress is currently being made to realize quantum networks on a small scale, but much theoretical work is still needed in order to understand how best to distribute entanglement and to guide the realization of large-scale quantum …
