Prescribed Fire Effects On Resource Selection By Cattle In Mesic Sagebrush Steppe. Part 1: Spring Grazing, Patrick Clark, Jaechoul Lee, Kyungduk Ko, Ryan Nielson, Douglas Johnson, David Ganskopp, Joe Chigbrow, Frederick Pierson, Stuart Hardegree Dec 2013

Prescribed Fire Effects On Resource Selection By Cattle In Mesic Sagebrush Steppe. Part 1: Spring Grazing, Patrick Clark, Jaechoul Lee, Kyungduk Ko, Ryan Nielson, Douglas Johnson, David Ganskopp, Joe Chigbrow, Frederick Pierson, Stuart Hardegree

Kyungduk Ko

Prescribed fire is commonly applied world-wide as a tool for enhancing habitats and altering resource-selection patterns of grazing animals. A scientific basis for this practice has been established in some ecosystems but its efficacy has not been rigorously evaluated on mesic sagebrush steppe. Beginning in 2003, resource-selection patterns of beef cows were investigated using global positioning system (GPS) collars for 2 years before and for 5 years after a fall prescribed burn was applied to mesic sagebrush steppe in the Owyhee Mountains of southwestern Idaho, USA. Resource-selection functions (RSF) developed from these data indicated cattle selected for lightly to moderately …

Localized Bases For Kernel Spaces On The Unit Sphere, E. Fuselier, T. Hangelbroek, F. J. Narcowich, J. D. Ward, G. B. Wright Dec 2013

Localized Bases For Kernel Spaces On The Unit Sphere, E. Fuselier, T. Hangelbroek, F. J. Narcowich, J. D. Ward, G. B. Wright

Grady Wright

Approximation/interpolation from spaces of positive definite or conditionally positive definite kernels is an increasingly popular tool for the analysis and synthesis of scattered data and is central to many meshless methods. For a set of N scattered sites, the standard basis for such a space utilizes N globally supported kernels; computing with it is prohibitively expensive for large N. Easily computable, well-localized bases with “small-footprint” basis elements—i.e., elements using only a small number of kernels—have been unavailable. Working on S2, with focus on the restricted surface spline kernels (e.g., the thin-plate splines restricted to the sphere), we construct easily computable, …

Numerical Studies Of The Generalized L1 Greedy Algorithm For Sparse Signals, Fangjun Arroyo, Edward Arroyo, Xiezhang Li, Jiehua Zhu

Xiezhang Li

The generalized l1 greedy algorithm was recently introduced and used to reconstruct medical images in computerized tomography in the compressed sensing framework via total variation minimization. Experimental results showed that this algorithm is superior to the reweighted l1-minimization and l1 greedy algorithms in reconstructing these medical images. In this paper the effectiveness of the generalized l1 greedy algorithm in finding random sparse signals from underdetermined linear systems is investigated. A series of numerical experiments demonstrate that the generalized l1 greedy algorithm is superior to the reweighted l1-minimization and l1 greedy algorithms in the successful recovery of randomly generated Gaussian sparse …

Fixed-Point Free Circle Actions On 4-Manifolds, Weimin Chen Chen Nov 2013

Fixed-Point Free Circle Actions On 4-Manifolds, Weimin Chen Chen

Weimin Chen

This paper is concerned with fixed-point free S1-actions (smooth or locally linear) on orientable 4-manifolds. We show that the fundamental group plays a predominant role in the equivariant classification of such 4-manifolds. In particular, it is shown that for any finitely presented group with infinite center, there are at most finitely many distinct smooth (resp. topological) 4-manifolds which support a fixed-point free smooth (resp. locally linear) S1-action and realize the given group as the fundamental group. A similar statement holds for the number of equivalence classes of fixed-point free S1-actions under some further conditions on the fundamental group. The connection …

Leslie Matrices For Logistic Population Modeling, Bruce Kessler Nov 2013

Leslie Matrices For Logistic Population Modeling, Bruce Kessler

Bruce Kessler

Leslie matrices are taught as a method of modeling populations in a discrete-time fashion with more detail in the tracking of age groups within the population. Leslie matrices have limited use in the actual modeling of populations, since when the age groups are summed, it is basically equivalent to discrete-time modeling assuming exponential population growth. The logistic model of population growth is more realistic, since it takes into account a carrying capacity for the environment of the population. This talk will describe an adjustment to the Leslie matrix approach for population modeling that is both takes into account the carrying …

In Hollywood, some actors are regularly cast as mean, others as sweet and endearing, and some typically play innocent big-eyed youths who inevitably succeed after awakening to the particular facts of life that their producer wants them to awaken to. It is unusual and difficult for actors to cross the bridge between different types on a regular basis. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. In the seemingly unrelated world of academics, mathematics faculty may find themselves playing different roles. People with different skills and interests strive to balance their careers in ways that will be uniquely fulfilling to …

X2 Tests For The Choice Of The Regularization Parameter In Nonlinear Inverse Problems, J. L. Mead, C. C. Hammerquist

Jodi Mead

We address discrete nonlinear inverse problems with weighted least squares and Tikhonov regularization. Regularization is a way to add more information to the problem when it is ill-posed or ill-conditioned. However, it is still an open question as to how to weight this information. The discrepancy principle considers the residual norm to determine the regularization weight or parameter, while the χ2 method [J. Mead, J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl., 16 (2008), pp. 175–194; J. Parametric Sensitivity Analysis For Biochemical Reaction Networks Based On Pathwise Information Theory, Yannis Pantazis, Markos Katsoulakis, Dionisios G. Vlachos Oct 2013

Parametric Sensitivity Analysis For Biochemical Reaction Networks Based On Pathwise Information Theory, Yannis Pantazis, Markos Katsoulakis, Dionisios G. Vlachos

Markos Katsoulakis

Background: Stochastic modeling and simulation provide powerful predictive methods for the intrinsic understanding of fundamental mechanisms in complex biochemical networks. Typically, such mathematical models involve networks of coupled jump stochastic processes with a large number of parameters that need to be suitably calibrated against experimental data. In this direction, the parameter sensitivity analysis of reaction networks is an essential mathematical and computational tool, yielding information regarding the robustness and the identifiability of model parameters. However, existing sensitivity analysis approaches such as variants of the finite difference method can have an overwhelming computational cost in models with a high-dimensional parameter space. …

Bayesian Analysis Of Hypothesis Testing Problems For General Population: A Kullback–Leibler Alternative, Naveen Bansal, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Ru Sheng Oct 2013

Bayesian Analysis Of Hypothesis Testing Problems For General Population: A Kullback–Leibler Alternative, Naveen Bansal, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Ru Sheng

Naveen Bansal

We consider a hypothesis problem with directional alternatives. We approach the problem from a Bayesian decision theoretic point of view and consider a situation when one side of the alternatives is more important or more probable than the other. We develop a general Bayesian framework by specifying a mixture prior structure and a loss function related to the Kullback–Leibler divergence. This Bayesian decision method is applied to Normal and Poisson populations. Simulations are performed to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of a method based on a classical z-test and a Bayesian method based on the …

Creating Composite Age Groups To Smooth Percentile Rank Distributions Of Small Samples, Francesca Lopez, Amy Olson, Naveen Bansal Oct 2013

Creating Composite Age Groups To Smooth Percentile Rank Distributions Of Small Samples, Francesca Lopez, Amy Olson, Naveen Bansal

Naveen Bansal

Individually administered tests are often normed on small samples, a process that may result in irregularities within and across various age or grade distributions. Test users often smooth distributions guided by Thurstone assumptions (normality and linearity) to result in norms that adhere to assumptions made about how the data should look. Test users, however, may come across particular tests or sets of data in which the Thurstone assumptions are untenable. When users expect deviations from normality within age or grade, an alternate method is desirable. The authors present a relatively simple procedure that allows the user to treat observed raw …

Joint User Grouping And Linear Virtual Beamforming: Complexity, Algorithms And Approximation Bounds, Mingyi Hong, Zi Xu, Meisam Razaviyayn, Zhi-Quan Luo

Mingyi Hong

In a wireless system with a large number of distributed nodes, the quality of communication can be greatly improved by pooling the nodes to perform joint transmission/reception. In this paper, we consider the problem of optimally selecting a subset of nodes from potentially a large number of candidates to form a virtual multi-antenna system, while at the same time designing their joint linear transmission strategies. We focus on two specific application scenarios: 1) multiple single antenna transmitters cooperatively transmit to a receiver; 2) a single transmitter transmits to a receiver with the help of a number of cooperative relays. We …

Symplectic Harmonic Theory And The Federer-Fleming Deformation Theorem, Yi Lin Sep 2013

Symplectic Harmonic Theory And The Federer-Fleming Deformation Theorem, Yi Lin

Yi Lin

In this article, we initiate a geometric measure theoretic approach to symplectic Hodge theory. In particular, we apply one of the central results in geometric measure theory, the Federer-Fleming deformation theorem, together with the cohomology theory of normal cur- rents on a differential manifold, to establish a fundamental property on symplectic Harmonic forms. We show that on a closed symplectic manifold, every real primitive cohomology class of positive degrees admits a symplectic Harmonic representative not supported on the entire mani- fold. As an application, we use it to investigate the support of symplectic Harmonic representatives of Thom classes, and give …

Characterization Of (C)-Riordan Arrays, Gegenbauer-Humbert-Type Polynomial Sequences, And (C)-Bell Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Henry Gould Aug 2013

Characterization Of (C)-Riordan Arrays, Gegenbauer-Humbert-Type Polynomial Sequences, And (C)-Bell Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Henry Gould

Tian-Xiao He

Here presented are the definitions of (c)-Riordan arrays and (c)-Bell polynomials which are extensions of the classical Riordan arrays and Bell polynomials. The characterization of (c)-Riordan arrays by means of the A- and Z-sequences is given, which corresponds to a horizontal construction of a (c)-Riordan array rather than its definition approach through column generating functions. There exists a one-to-one correspondence between Gegenbauer-Humbert-type polynomial sequences and the set of (c)-Riordan arrays, which generates the sequence characterization of Gegenbauer-Humbert-type polynomial sequences. The sequence characterization is applied to construct readily a (c)-Riordan array. In addition, subgrouping of (c)-Riordan arrays by using the characterizations …

Discrete Fourier Restriction Associated With Kdv Equations, Yi Hu, Xiaochun Li

Yi Hu

In this paper, we consider a discrete restriction associated with KdV equations. Some new Strichartz estimates are obtained. We also establish the local well-posedness for the periodic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with nonlinear term $F(u)\p_x u$ provided F∈C5 and the initial data ϕ∈Hs with s>1/2.

Long-Wave Model For Strongly Anisotropic Growth Of A Crystal Step, Mikhail Khenner Aug 2013

Long-Wave Model For Strongly Anisotropic Growth Of A Crystal Step, Mikhail Khenner

Mikhail Khenner

A continuum model for the dynamics of a single step with the strongly anisotropic line energy is formulated and analyzed. The step grows by attachment of adatoms from the lower terrace, onto which atoms adsorb from a vapor phase or from a molecular beam, and the desorption is nonnegligible (the “one-sided” model). Via a multiscale expansion, we derived a long-wave, strongly nonlinear, and strongly anisotropic evolution PDE for the step profile. Written in terms of the step slope, the PDE can be represented in a form similar to a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. We performed the linear stability analysis and computed …

Sections Of Surface Bundles And Lefschetz Fibrations, Inanc Baykur, Mustafa Korkmaz, Naoyuki Monden Aug 2013

Sections Of Surface Bundles And Lefschetz Fibrations, Inanc Baykur, Mustafa Korkmaz, Naoyuki Monden

Inanc Baykur

We investigate the possible self-intersection numbers for sections of surface bundles and Lefschetz fibrations over surfaces. When the fiber genus g and the base genus h are positive, we prove that the adjunction bound 2h−2 is the only universal bound on the self-intersection number of a section of any such genus g bundle and fibration. As a side result, in the mapping class group of a surface with boundary, we calculate the precise value of the commutator lengths of all powers of a Dehn twist about a boundary component, concluding that the stable commutator length of such a Dehn twist …

A Study Of Non-Central Skew T Distributions And Their Applications In Data Analysis And Change Point Detection, Abeer Hasan Jul 2013

A Study Of Non-Central Skew T Distributions And Their Applications In Data Analysis And Change Point Detection, Abeer Hasan

Abeer Hasan

Over the past three decades there has been a growing interest in searching for distribution
families that are suitable to analyze skewed data with excess kurtosis. The search started
by numerous papers on the skew normal distribution. Multivariate t distributions started to
catch attention shortly after the development of the multivariate skew normal distribution.
Many researchers proposed alternative methods to generalize the univariate t distribution to
the multivariate case. Recently, skew t distribution started to become popular in research.
Skew t distributions provide more exibility and better ability to accommodate long-tailed
data than skew normal distributions.
In this dissertation, a new …

Superset : A Mathematical Investigation Of A Variation Of Set, Jeffrey C. Pereira

Jeffrey C Pereira

Aside from being fun, card games have been used as methods to teach elements of probability. One such card game ,"SET", has players find groups of three cards called SETs. In this paper ,I investigate the mathematics of the game of SET such as the probabilities of finding various SETs in the actual game as well as modelling probabilities of more complicated games identifying the geometry of a SET. I also look at forming a geometric model for identifying SETs and use this as a means of finding the Maximal Cap of the game. In addition to the classic game …

On Random Time And On The Relation Between Wave And Telegraph Equations, Ramakrishna Janaswamy May 2013

On Random Time And On The Relation Between Wave And Telegraph Equations, Ramakrishna Janaswamy

Ramakrishna Janaswamy

Kac’s conjecture relating the solution of wave and telegraph equations in higher dimensions through a Poisson process-driven random time is established through the concepts of stochastic calculus. New expression is derived for the probability density function of the random time. We demonstrate how the relationship between the solution of a lossy wave- and that of a lossless wave equation can be exploited to derive some statistical identities. Relevance of the results presented to the study of pulse propagation in a dispersive medium characterized by a Lorentz or Drude model is discussed and new evolution equations for 2D Maxwell’s equations are …

Early Investigations In Conformal And Differential Geometry, Raymond T. Walter Apr 2013

Early Investigations In Conformal And Differential Geometry, Raymond T. Walter

Raymond Walter

The present [undergraduate] honors thesis seeks to introduce fundamental notions of conformal and differ- ential geometry, especially when such notions are useful in various mathematical physics applications. Its primary achievement is a nontraditional proof of the classic result of Liouville that the only conformal transformations in Euclidean space of dimension greater than three are Möbius transformations. The proof is nontraditional in the sense that it is based on a representation of Möbius transformations using 2x2 matrices of Clifford numbers as well as the standard Dirac operator on Euclidean space. Clifford algebras and the Dirac operator are important in other important …
