The Simple Random Walk On A Random Voronoi Tiling, Amites Sarkar, Louigi Addario-Berry

Amites Sarkar

Let P be a Poisson point process in ℝd with intensity 1. We show that the simple random walk on the cells of the Voronoi diagram of P is almost surely recurrent in dimensions d = 1 and d = 2 and is almost surely transient in dimension d ≥ 3.

Graduate Student Satisfaction With An Online Discrete Mathematics Course, Amber Settle, Chad Settle Sep 2005

Graduate Student Satisfaction With An Online Discrete Mathematics Course, Amber Settle, Chad Settle

Amber Settle

Student satisfaction with distance learning is impacted by a variety of factors, including interaction with the instructor and the structure of the course. We describe our experiences teaching discrete mathematics to graduate students using both a traditional classroom setting and two different types of distance learning formats. We then compare student evaluations between the traditional and distance-learning courses to determine if student satisfaction was affected by the course format.

Dynamics Of Trapped Bright Solitons In The Presence Of Localized Inhomogeneities, G. Herring, Panos Kevrekidis, R. Carretero-Gonzalez, B. A. Malomed, D. J. Frantzeskakis, A. R. Bishop Sep 2005

Dynamics Of Trapped Bright Solitons In The Presence Of Localized Inhomogeneities, G. Herring, Panos Kevrekidis, R. Carretero-Gonzalez, B. A. Malomed, D. J. Frantzeskakis, A. R. Bishop

Panos Kevrekidis

We examine the dynamics of a bright solitary wave in the presence of a repulsive or attractive localized ``impurity'' in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We study the generation and stability of a pair of steady states in the vicinity of the impurity as the impurity strength is varied. These two new steady states, one stable and one unstable, disappear through a saddle-node bifurcation as the strength of the impurity is decreased. The dynamics of the soliton is also examined in all the cases (including cases where the soliton is offset from one of the relevant fixed points). The numerical results are …

Actions Of Sl(N,Z) On Homology Spheres, Kamlesh Parwani

Kamlesh Parwani

Any continuous action of SL(n,Z), where n > 2, on a r-dimensional mod 2 homology sphere factors through a finite group action if r < n - 1. In particular, any continuous action of SL(n+2,Z) on the n-dimensional sphere factors through a finite group action.

A nationwide push for the use of technology has influenced classroom teaching in the United States. This study examined the use of technology in elementary classrooms. Specific aspects of technology such as PowerPoint and word processing were examined in relation to developing skills in writing. Data from 46 fifth and third grade students as well as self-evaluation interviews with teachers were used to understand the overall comprehensive value of technology in teaching how to write. I expect my results to support previous research findings which assert that using computer technology in writing motivates students to do better work and is …

Beamer By Example, Andrew Mertz, William Slough Jan 2005

Beamer By Example, Andrew Mertz, William Slough

Andrew Mertz

There are a variety of LaTeX classes which can be used to produce "overhead slides" for presentations. One of these, beamer, provides flexible and powerful environments which can be used to create slides and PDF-based documents suitable for presentations. Although the class is extensively documented, first-time users may prefer learning about this class using a collection of graduated examples. The examples presented here cover a wide spectrum of use, from the simplest static slides to those with dynamic effects.

Conformal Structures And Necksizes Of Embedded Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces, Robert Kusner Jan 2005

Conformal Structures And Necksizes Of Embedded Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces, Robert Kusner

Robert Kusner

Let M = M_{g,k} denote the space of properly (Alexandrov) embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces of genus g with k (labeled) ends, modulo rigid motions, endowed with the real analytic structure described in [kmp]. Let P=Pg,k=rg,k×Rk+ be the space of parabolic structures over Riemann surfaces of genus g with k (marked) punctures, the real analytic structure coming from the 3g-3+k local complex analytic coordinates on the Riemann moduli space r_{g,k}. Then the parabolic classifying map, Phi: M --> P, which assigns to a CMC surface its induced conformal structure and asymptotic necksizes, is a proper, real analytic map. It …

We consider two preenveloping classes of left R-modules ℐ, ℰ such that Inj ⊂ ℐ ⊂ ℰ, and a left R-module N. For any left R-module M and n ≥ 1 we define the relative extension modules (M, N) and prove the existence of an exact sequence connecting these modules and the modules (M, N) and (M, N). We show that there is a long exact sequence of (M, −) associated with a Hom(−, ℰ) exact sequence 0 → N′ → N → N′′ → 0 and a long exact sequence of (−, N) associated with a Hom(−, ℰ) exact …

Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He Dec 2004

Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

In this paper, we will start the discussion with the refinable generators of the shift invariant (SI) spaces in L2 (R) that possess the largest possible regularities and required vanishing moments. For the pseudo-scaling generators, the corresponding MRA frame wavelets with certain regularities are constructed. In addition, the stability of the refinable SI spaces and the corresponding complementary spaces, biorthogonality of the SI spaces, and the approximation property of the spaces are also discussed.

A Symbolic Operator Approach To Several Summation Formulas For Power Series, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue, D. Torney Dec 2004

A Symbolic Operator Approach To Several Summation Formulas For Power Series, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue, D. Torney

Tian-Xiao He

This paper deals with the summation problem of power series of the form Sba (f; x) = ∑a ≤ k ≤ b f(k) xk, where 0≤ a < b ≤ ∞, and {f(k)} is a given sequence of numbers with k Є [a, b) or f(t) is a differentiable function defined on [a, b). We present a symbolic summation operator with its various expansions, and construct several summation formulas with estimable remainders for Sba (f; x), by the aid of some classical interpolation series due to Newton, Gauss and Everett, respectively.
